MBB Head Coach Hire

Figured I'd start a new thread but as posted by Hornet25, the MBB HC position is officially open. Given what is at stake for future conference membership, it's going to be critical for the next HC to get this program to a competitive level so I'm glad Wood isn't wasting time by waiting until after the Hornets are bounced from Boise. Moving into the Pavilion next season will help, but I'm skeptical on it's impact as a whole for this program. At the least the Pavilion is a step in the right direction.

Given Wood's proclivity to grab headlines, I think he'll use this as another opportunity to bang the drum and make a hire that garners attention. My guess is that this hire will be a gimmick hire and a name is hired over meaningful experience. An ex-NBA player or someone that can grab headlines would be my guess and it will be touted as a "transformative" move. I'm not a fan of this approach but given the downtrodden history of this program for most of the D1 era I'm not necessarily opposed to this kind of a move.

Thoughts?

Jim Les is an ex NBA player, so going that route does not necessarily mean no substance. The difference between basketball and football is that a football head coach CAN be a figure head if they are surrounded by great assistants. Basketball needs the coach to be competent across the board. Going just for headlines basketball could be a recipe for disaster.

With that said, Bobby Hurley is on the hot seat and I've been watching that one closely. Maybe he's beyond the reach of Sac State, but....who knows. I thought Marion was out of reach too.

Doug Christie is a dead man walking... Mike Bibby fired from his HS job after sexual harassment issues... C-Webb?

Jim Les was a proven college coach. If we go for a flashy hire with no experience it will be another fail just like the last hire. I have no confidence we can generate enough NIL money to overcome an incompetent coach. Schools with our resources are going to have to find a different formula in the current landscape. We may have to swing and miss a few times before we land on a coach willing to build a program and connect with the community.

Doug Christie is a dead man walking...

How do you come to that conclusion? The KINGS are 19-10 since DC was named interim HC and they’ve gone 8-4 since trading Fox away. Despite a ton of road games and little practice time.

The KINGS have a 4.5 game lead for the last play-in spot with 22 games remaining and are only a half game out of the 6th seed which is an automatic qualifier for the postseason. They have a killer schedule remaining, but still. The fact that they are even in the position they’re in is a testament to how well Christie has done.

I don’t see any way Christie isn’t retained, especially so should they qualify for the postseason after all the in-season adversity (and with Sabonis now missing time). He seems to have the players attention and respect.

It sounds to me as if you haven’t really been paying attention to what’s been going on there.

You trust the Kings to do the right thing? LOL, sounds like YOU haven't been paying attention.

Mike Brown. Bobby Jackson...

Ideally, you take an NBA assistant or G league head coach, if there is a guarantee of bigger games being played at G1C. Otherwise it might be an impossible sell.

I wasn't even considering Mike Brown. He is rich AF and riding out a long Kings deal that he would have to give up if he took another NBA job.

Maybe he does stick around in SAC? You have to ask if you're Orr/Wood....

I prefer Bobby. The community loves him. But Mike Brown would be tremendous amd a win win for both, if Sac State somehow got into the PAC-12. That's the only way it makes sense for Brown.

I know the PAC-12 is a longshot, but Wood saying Sac State announcement would come in March or early April coincides with all of the PAC-12 media rights rumors etc. He may be waiting for all of that to shake out and get an official no before moving forward with the independence route.

Curious to see where the Oly sports go though.

Total guess as to what the roster will look like with a new coach in this transfer portal/NIL world. I think the freshman big, Diorama and freshman wing Brewer would be the only two I would for certain like to see return. I think Skytta has some value as an 8th or 9th rotational player, but if he is a starter the team is not good. If Kovatchev gets a medical redshirt and has three years left he is probably worth another look, but again he needs to be a bench player next year. Personally for basketball I don’t think a flashy hire is the way to go. It is a different animal than football. I think stability is going to be key for programs like ours at the Big Sky/Big West level. With the right coach I think we can build and grow with young players and diamonds in the rough like Coach Katz did. A coach like that can connect with the community and grow interest. A flashy hire or second level assistant from a big program is looking for a quick hit to jump up. Didn’t work with Patrick. Would love to see Laird get an opportunity. Another coach with local ties is Chris Walker. I think either of those would be a great fit.
