Oh, no....I remember the last time PSU and MSU played....

You guys beat the worst team in the last 30 years of McNeese football.

Congratulations. Unfortunately, you're not playing those guys this time around

Vikings plot to beat the heat
Louisiana weather could be a factor against McNeese State
By steve brandon

The Portland Tribune, Aug 28, 2007

Portland State coach Jerry Glanville wants his players to start hydrating the minute they get to Louisiana for Saturday night’s season opener.

But McNeese State coach Matt Viator throws cold water on the theory that the heat and humidity in Lake Charles will be the host Cowboys’ crucial 12th man.

“I’ve never bought into the idea that you get used to the heat,” Viator says. “You learn to tolerate it. Heat takes its toll, but that comes after you’ve been in it for at least a few days, not in just one night.”

The Cowboys have been in it. Viator says they just went through a 10-day stretch of 100-plus days and “pretty rough” humidity.

“You just stand outside and water starts pouring off you,” McNeese State sports information director Louis Bonnette says.

Viator notes that the forecast for Saturday is for a high of only about 90 and a low of about 75, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

If Portland State’s hands are sweaty, it might be partly from trying to cope with the Cowboys’ experience, talent and speed. McNeese State returns 57 players, including nine starters on offense, six starters on defense and all-Southland Conference kicker-punter Blake Bercegeay.

Among the returnees: QB Derrick Fourroux, receiver/kickoff and punt returner Steven Whitehead and defensive end Bryan Smith. Whitehead and Smith, the school’s sack record-holder, were junior All-Americans.

“Steven is small (5-8, 170), but he’s a phenomenal player, extremely quick,” Viator says. “He got some rushing yards last year, too. We’ll try to do a little bit of everything with him.”

Sophomore Fourroux (6-2, 200) passed for 124 yards per game and ran for 31 as the Cowboys went 7-5 and won their conference.

“He’s kind of a throwback guy, he runs it good, and he’s not looking to slide or get out of bounds,” Viator says. “He’s as tough as any young man I’ve ever been around. And we think his throwing in the pocket has improved.”

PSU at McNeese State
When, where: 5 p.m. PT, Cowboy Stadium, Lake Charles, La.

Radio: KTRO (910 AM)

This and that: McNeese State won the Southland Conference last year before losing 31-6 to Montana in the first round of the playoffs. With loads of experience, the Cowboys are confident. Safety Josh Quayhagen told the Leesville (La.) Daily Leader this month: “We really expect to win a national title.” Coach Matt Viator, however, is preaching a different sermon. “That conference title was a long time ago,” he says. “This is a new team that has to find its identity and define its leaders.” … The Cowboy offensive line has suffered a couple of injuries in camp. … McNeese State had its offense try to simulate PSU’s run-and-shoot in practice last week. “We ran what we think they’re going to run, hoping to help our defense get a good look at it,” Viator says. “We have some speed on defense, which we’re really excited about.” … Ben Broussard of the Seattle Mariners will be one of four inductees at halftime into the McNeese State Hall of Fame. … PSU sophomore Matt Bramow could start for suspended wideout Kenneth Mackins.

Dang those long-term forecasts. Now, it looks like that heat index is goin' up again just in time for the big game. Where do you want me to send the poke salad?

Was in that game, they were garbage. Their oline was slow off the ball. Lucky for them they are not on our turf this time.

I hope the result is the same as 2004

GO VIKS!

BOOOOOOOO the COWBOYS!!!!

Well, if McNeese had a slow offensive line, that was very uncharacteristic.

We've had some pretty fast offensive linemen over the years
icon_wink.gif

Including one that ran hurdles for the track team until he blew out a knee????? /users/31/07/37/smiles/269784.gif

Doc

Actually, Doc, we've had some other guys who moved pretty well....Besides, that guy weasels his way into way too many speed discussions on message boards some 20 years after the fact
icon_wink.gif

I was thinking more along the lines of collective speed. Taking me out of the equation, my senior year you had guard Ivy Woods who was an 800 meter runner in HS,tackle Anthony Fontenot who ran the 400 and even ole' Lark Hebert was a HS High Jumper. Can you imagine THAT much mass getting over the bar? Guard Richard Burks ran the intermediate hurdles in HS. Those four guys coulda lined up and ran a fatman relay against any other line in the country and probably acquitted themselves very well...

Traditionally, though the McCenters have been the fastest linemen on the team. David Healy was pretty damn quick, himself, and Jeff Mathews could run well, to say nothing about Sam Breaux. I could go on, but the notion of McNeese having a slow line is way out of the ordinary.

Of course, it IS the 2004 team that the guy was talking about

This year, I'd be willing to bet that Jimbo Hill is more than likely going to be the fastest lilneman, but that's a function of his track and field background and muscularity...and the fact that he's from Sulphur
