Mental Let Go

I am happy for WSU, I am surprised because I thought the president leaving for Logan would slow this down. I didn't understand why Mental was hired in the first place. I don't think he would have been a finalist at any other Big Sky school. I hope the hiring committee opens up the search to include coaches without ties to Weber State so that the best available coach has a chance.

For what it's worth, the Interim Pres came from a school that expects good football. Don't know if she was involved in this at all, just a thought. And maybe, just maybe, the last Pres was holding the athletic department back. Seems like a very nice guy. Maybe too nice for today's college athletics.

Just spitballing here, and probably a long shot to pull him away from the NFL, but how about Alex Whittingham? He's only a low level assistant so maybe a chance to move back to Utah and get head coaching experience would be appealing to him.

Hopefully recent history will repeat itself. Mcbride (legend) to John L/Sears (dumpster fire) to Jay (legend?) to Mickey (dumpster fire) next one should be great...

There are only 265 HC gigs in DI Football. To go from being a special teams coordinator to HC is a major jump in coaching. So, I stand by my list. My concern is where the department is right now. I haven't heard good things. Lots of issues with athletics, which could create an environment where potential coaches don't want to jump into.

List:
Kelly Poppinga (dude is ready to be a HC)
Fesi Sitake (He was a good OC at Weber. Understand the program, can recruit, was part of Jay's staff during the rebuild, knows the university and community).
Chad Kauha'aha'a (was part of Mac's staff. Has been around football for a long time)
Gary Andersen (yes...that Gary Andersen and why not?)
Ed Lamb (Would he leave NCO??)
Kevin McGiven (OC for MAC)
Nick Howell (Ogden guy)
Brent Myers (maybe take the interim off)
Colton Swan (THIS IS MY TOP CHOICE for obvious reasons)
Eric Price (Weber and Ogden guy)
Freddie Whittingham (want to create some controversy)

There are options folks...

I like Myers, but I don’t think you can fill from a staff that had terrible results. I know he’s been with team through multiple staffs…honestly should have been given the reigns over Mental, but a change is needed. I guess they thought Mental’s head coaching experience is reason why he was selected.

I just hope they take their time and open up a legitimate search and pull in all interested takers. Honestly, I wouldn’t rush as many coaches will be fired very in a few weeks and draw more interest. I’m thinking Choate might be a candidate in a few weeks.

There should also be a panel involved in this. I’m scared Crompton would probably hire Matt Hammer on his own. Crompton is a nice guy but his track record with football and basketball have sucked something awful. Need some other eyes on this hire.

I find the timing very interesting. I’m sure it’s not a coincidence.

*I stand by my list.
That is a solid list. However, I would hope that a more comprehensive list would be developed. I don't want them to be trapped into thinking it must be someone with ties to WSU, the community or the state. Hire the best option and give them a contract with outs for both parties. Our current coaching staff is full of good guys who couldn't get the job done. One of them gets the job only if you have no other choice. If ever there was a time for a complete overhaul, it is now.

Fans should keep in mind that the next few years could be quite hard to stomach. It will be more than a rebuild.
