Montana State @ Portland State

Big game tonight.

I hope this Green Man Group program that they are pushing gets some students actually into the Stott, and actually into the game.

Oh what our house could be with a raucous student section.

Gah! We really pissed one away tonight.

Good showing by the student section tonight. The green men rule.

MSU was successful at taking Tapscott out of the offensive flow for us tonight, and our first half post defense tonight was absolutely terrible. MSU seemed to want to lull us into a half court game in the second half, and that ultimately did us in.

I have to question our coaching tonight. Our offensive play in the second half was rotten. Pass the ball around up top until we get low on the shot clock and put up a bad shot. Some of these were coming right out of timeouts.

Many glaring errors tonight. Our weaknesses really shone forth. Thank goodness for Harthun, Odum and Winston. These guys nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The point losing the ball when we were down by two was the death knell.

I question whether Geving is coming along as a head coach quickly enough to justify our holding on to him. Bone was good and is proving himself at Wazzu. Geving is faring better than Sobotka, but not by much. I think I would like him to go back to recruiting and assistant coaching with another Ken Bone type coming in to relieve him as head coach.

I think last night said a bit about your question.

Up 15, MSU starts a run, and instead of taking a timeout, we wait for the media timeout. I think MSU got another couple of buckets during that period. Take the timeout and regroup. Seems like Coaching 101.

Geving is at risk of becoming the first PSU coach to have three straight losing seasons since PSU brought men's bball back. I think we can do better.

He's not trending well at all. Glanville was released after his wins went from 3 to 4 and then down to 2. Burton's trend is clear, upward and positive. I just don't believe Tyler is the head coach type at this level. He is a talented recruiter and a player's (assistant) coach. We need Bone-style leadership again. We need to bring in a new coaching star. Do we have the basketball version of Mouse Davis to help us do that? Does Freeman know someone? Whom do we know who is up on the national scene?

We need to formulate a basketball coach selection committee akin to the one for football. I think the players know they are not being coached legitimately well. It is the efforts of the players themselves that have gotten them the wins they've taken.

:thumb: U all is so smart on da b-ball stuff. maybe u shude talk to mr chisholm about gettin dda job a we'll c how sharp u really is.

Curious thing. When the Viks took the lead in the second half, did they not look indomitable? They seemed to even be toying with Montana State. They were playing at a higher level. Then they "stopped" with 11:00+ minutes to go.

Could they possibly have been signaling how good they were, how talented they were as individuals and as a team, and then decided to let MSU back in the game in order to "chess-match" them at the end? I wonder. Because they played with such mastery for the first 8:00+ minutes of the second half.

Keep in mind that standings mean almost nothing come tournament time (sans bottom three). First and Second Place have the luxury of fewer games to play, and First Place has the luxury of venue, but that is about it. Maybe the odd combinations, lack of rebounds, etc. were purposely staged to artificially create team weaknesses and then the team uses these to expose what result from these weaknesses (e.g. providing a lane, allowing two to team up under the basket) and use these as canon fodder in practice?

If (big if) this is the case, our coaching staff is quite brilliant and certainly worthy of being retained. What are the odds? Last season was almost entirely like that. Look how far they've come since then. The only prize at this level is going to the Dance with the opportunity to face down the big dogs. Games can be used as "practices," if you will, to build muscle in remaining areas of relative weakness. The Tourney and the Tournament are the sole rewards and measures of success.
