Mountain West invites Fresno and Nevada, WAC implications?

Somebody mentioned they didn't think raising student fees, would be needed to move to the WAC. Ok, how do you expect Sac St to pay for the 25 extra football scholarships and the extra women's scholarship to meet Title IX. And don't be a davis grad (edit) and say football only needs 23 or whatever the exact number, like the two extra scholarships are going to be a breaking point.

A bowl game in Sac? Not until the stadium, which many fans on here have complained about, is expanded.

Everybody on here says yes, but nobody has talked about how to pay for the move.

You're ruining my "buzz" Jack... You don't need extra money to pay for 25 football schollies, you cut men's golf add a couple women's crew schollies.

You have no clue. If you think WAC football can be paid for by cutting golf and crew schollies, you're as beautiful as Roseanne Barr. JH-don't attack the poster. (edit). Attack the post.

Here's something for SD Hornet to investigate: let's compare Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State when they made the jump from D1aa (FCS) to D1 (FBS). Without any facts, I'd think that they were in similar situations as us (maybe with a little more success at the FCS level than we have had). But in regards to Media Market, Financial Situation, Facilities, Etc I'd think we'd be on the same level if not better (from when they made the jump).
Obviously with some success on the field since they made the jump, they have been some of the most successful non BCS schools in the nation. I think with the same success on the field we could be a "BCS Buster" or have programs like Cincinnati and Cal come visit us (Like Fresno and Nevada this year) or maybe someday beating a Big 12 school in a bowl game (like Boise).

Cutting sports could work, however, we've all seen the fallout with UCFE this past year. They're suing. Cutting womens crew is out of the question, mens tennis is too, they have too many conference titles to just get rid of them, there's too much good history. Golf, I could see going, but that "sport" is expected here in CA.

There's a whole lot of "what ifs" and "we coulds," for all we know, as one of the other posters wrote, this may not even be on Gonzo's radar. But I think it is. His aspirations for Sac State are too high to not jump at this opportunity, it's right in line with his agenda of trying to make Sac State a destination campus.

And, I'm sure Roseanne Barr isnt that bad looking after a case or two of beers. Not that I'd know, just sayin :) :(

So you're saying we are Rosanne Barr and the WAC is drunk on two cases of beer?

Tennis can stay if they are self sufficient. And how much do they draw and how much support do they get? How much donations do they bring into the athletic department because of their success? These are questions that can be asked of any sport and the answers will determine if they are put on the chopping block or not. It all comes down to the bottom line $$$.

Jack, clearly I'm not ignorant enough to think that eliminating a couple sports would fund a move to the WAC. I was posting (and quoting) in response to the scholarship/Title IX issues surrounding the move.

I think it would be tough to go back and pull relevant info related to the move of those schools. What I have heard is that both Nevada and Boise were pretty dominant before they made the move. A while back I did a comparison of what was then to be potentially 3 CSU schools in the WAC if Sac State was to make the move. Here is it:

Really? Please tell us something we don't know. Maybe the sky is blue? Or snow is cold.

Get ready for a long rant based on a rumor-

I think we are going to have to wait a while to find out what our future and the future of the WAC is going to be. According to a few other boards I’ve been following, BYU is attempting to put together their own conference. This is just a rumor, but people seem to be running with it. If this is true it can create a whole new level of chaos and school movement. I have no idea how Sac State would fit into the mix.

The rumored schools involved with the latest BYU conference split are Utah State, Wyoming, Air Force, New Mexico, TCU, Colorado State and the Texas CUSA schools. That would leave the MWC with Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV and SDSU. The next move for the remaining MWC schools would be to either add the remaining WAC school, try to add FCS schools (very, very, very unlikely), or merge with the remaining CUSA.

The WAC could screw the remaining MWC schools by inviting the 3 California FCS schools, Montana, possibly Montana State and Portland State and the two Texas schools making no room for those who bolted, though I think this would be far fetched. I think the remaining MWC schools going to the CUSA rather than going back to the WAC, or inviting the rest of the WAC.

Personally, I feel BYU’s actions are deplorable. They were the one’s who lead the charge to break up the WAC in the late 90’s, creating the Mountain West. Now that Utah got an invite to play with the cool kids, BYU is throwing a temper-tantrum, crying that they want to play by themselves, and by their own rules. If they break up another conference and screw over another bunch of schools, I can’t see anyone wanting to play with them.

I think Benson needs to get the ball back in his court and create a WAC that is sustainable for the future without the need of members coming back or combining forces. Send out the invites and show the other conferences that the WAC is serious about staying in business. Coming from a fan that wants to reach 1-A makes this seem argument seem self-serving, but I think it actually makes a lot of sense. SJSU, NMSU and Idaho should be aligned with a group of schools with no or little intention of bolting in the foreseeable future so there can finally be some stability in non-Pac 10 west coast collegiate athletics. I think if Sac, Poly and UCFE were to gain entry, none of the schools would be formulating MWC, CUSA or BYU conference ambitions. The three would build their 1-A programs within the WAC, happy to have a slew of reasonably close regional rivals. I can see the rivalry series between Sac, SJSU, Poly and UCFE as being huge. It could be a great series of games that could get recruits and fans interested in the new WAC.

Well, that’s the rant. Killing more time till we all find out what the hell is going on with this latest round of conference re-alignment.

To the mod. You edit my post, nice to see we have free speech, but you say attack the post not the poster. But there are plenty of examples where other people in this thread have attacked me.

Double standard? Or are you a jerk, who doesn't want differing opinions on this board?

Jack, quite contrare. Say and defend as you like but when you call people a$$holes, that's not cool.

Attacking opinions, which are all different, is certainly welcomed, just no name calling or taunting.

So let's try to look at this logistically.

If BYU's main goal is to become a BCS member, their best chance of doing that, is getting a Big 12 invitation OR hoping the MWC becomes a BCS conference. Forming a new conference would do nothing towards become a BCS school. It would also hurt them, because the NCAA may not give anymore conferences automatic bids in basketball.

If BYU's main goal is to promote and expand BYU TV, they do need a conference for the rest of their sports. The WCC seems very interested and if for some reason that doesn't work, maybe BYU looks to the Big West, which is a better conference in other sports, than the six remain WAC schools.

I think there's a better chance of the MWC becoming a BCS conference than BYU getting an invitation from the Big XII. I just think there is too much politics involved with the Big XII, more so than other conferences. We're talking Bible Belt universities, which I think is the main reason BYU didnt get an invite already.
