NAU Game Thread

Sort of a B-grade performance on both sides of the ball. There was enough to like to say Eastern played "well," but not enough to say "great." The defense still gives us far too many first downs, and the lost momentum when the offense stays off the field for such long stretches can change the dynamics of the game.

Frankly, I'd like to see more Gubrud with his feet. Every pass play that isn't immediately open should end with him hoofing the ball upfield. He's so good in open spaces that he can get big yards. I'd like to see the leash get taken off and him feel more empowered to get first downs with his feet instead of throwing a 50/50 ball.

Some complaints on the announcers, but I thought they did a good job. They showed a lot of excitement for big plays from teams on both sides. Just enough neutrality to be tolerable by us, but enough bias to serve their fanbase.

Eagles deserved this win. Take away the penalties and this game wouldn't have been as close. Best of luck here on out, Eagles fans.

And...anyone who thought NAU's announcers were bad hasn't been paying much attention to the rest of the Big Sky. Mitch Strohman and Kevin Stephens give credit to the opposition all the time.

Great win on the road, all players saw action, not sure if there were any substantive injuries. Without the penalties, this is a blowout. NAU's backup QB played very well, but penalties kept many drives alive.

Hard to see on the broadcast and would have liked to see the ball distributed to more of the WR talent, not sure what the downfield availability was against a good NAU secondary. Nsimba is a revelation this season, knew he could run by most defenses and Gage has learned to throw the deep ball this season. WR's need to be ready for the opportunity. Without the 94 yard run late, McPherson had 21 carries for about 70 yards... What's up OL?

D had 7 stops, 5 sacks, 4 three and outs and a pick. Only gave up 126 yards on the ground although it felt like more. Too many long 3rd downs again. 4 of them over 6 yards and several by penalty. Why all the penalties? Hope they clear it up.

Good win over top competition. Next week could be a barn burner.

I really like their announcers, sure they are homers but they love football and give credit to opposition all the time. I watched a couple NAU games last year and they were always interacting with fans either through email or Twitter and just enjoying football season, not sure a school could ask for more.

I still like Larry the most.

Totally agree. EWU caught a break with their starting safety out, Sutton. The backup could not cover Webster. All said, great road win. Other than the McPherson run EWU had issues running the ball and the D seemed to have struggled to get off the field in the 4th quarter on 3rd down. Might have been a little fatigue playing at 7,000 feet in Flagstaff.

All in all, great road win.

Between his run and Kalm's clip that could be the most entertaining/impactful play of the season. That will be tough to beat in such an early important win. Looks like we are in for big plays this season hopefully on both sides of the ball...this was a fun one.

I am very please with the road W. Flagstaff is a really hard place to win and I thought the score showed the game a lot closer than it really was. Eags led wire to wire and without those costly penalties, the D had only given up 13 pts well into the 4th quarter. I’ll take that all day, any day. Have we forgotten how bad the D was the last 5 years?

Next week will be tough. WSU will score, it’ll just be a matter of us being able to do the same. I like this team and am excited to get into conference play. If healthy, I think 10-1 is absolutely possible for this team.

If they stay healthy and out of trouble, 9-2 is the absolute floor for this team. Going to be a fun season.

Gubrud doesn’t need to run more. We don’t need him continually dinged up which will happen if he runs too much. He doesn’t need to run a lot with this group of receivers and OLine. He should go through his reads and only when all else breaks down he should run. I think he should use his mobility to lengthen plays and allow his receivers to get open (scramble drill).

Next week should be a cake walk since Wazzu is playing hobbits....

If I was wishing for anything different from the offense it would be more intermediate passes. It seemed we either ran between the tackles or pass 40+ yards. Our three top receivers averaged over 25 yds per completion.

Yep, the rest of the WR corps needs to work to get open. Wasn't at the game though like you, were they open? Don't seem to be using the middle of the field much either. Thinking TE and RB curls instead of the flat

11 for 135 yards is WAY too many, and 3 fumbles 1 lost is not good either, drive killers!

Agreed but NAU’s secondary was supposed to be a strength. We struggled with the deep stuff last year at times and they may have game planned to take away the the short and intermediate. Plus, we’re missing our best screen option in Custer.

WSU will see the over the top plays on film and have to game plan for them a bit. This could open up the underneath passing game.

Longer dink and dunk drives that eat clock might be our friend this week.

Best thing our D had going for them is when Cookus went down. Who knows what would have happened had he been in the entire game. My guess they would have had more that 13 going into 4th qtr....just a guess.

I think you are right Obzerver, we would have all we could handle with Cookus in the game. As it was after our two quick early scores they outscored us 26-17. They were also missing their best DB and starting center thus the over snap their first series.

No one is arguing that there is room for improvement. Penalties and ball security are a concern. You were at the game, are you saying there is a concern with the on field disposition of the team? attitude? focus? coaches? something else?

The game plan was working before the injury 14-0 and a pick; that's actually all I know.

2-0 has played out and now we have a better idea what kind of team this is and am looking forward to the Eags maximizing the possibilities. So far, year 2 under Best is the best so far. :D Go Eags.
