New Arena??

Vote yes you millennial morons! Just like we did in 2004!

Jeez, no pressure on Hornet Hoops to get off to a good, exciting a start, eh? The student athletes and ASI should be lobbying hard on campus for this with fliers, in uniform... Volleyball, basketball, gymnastics. Interact with the student body. Also emphasize the concerts, events, and more!

"Millennial Morons"? really? It's the previous generations who f*** shit up for the millennials, and tried to put the blame on the new generations (do some research!) (but that's a whole different discussion)

In regards to the arena, being a CURRENT student (who's a HUGE sac state fan), the math for the propose fees don't add up. It's easy to say (I vote this or I vote that) but $ never came out of your pocket. $200+ semester is a ridiculous amount of $ in this economy to ask the students to pay for. $500 dollars over a school year can help a student paid for 5 months worth of food/and a month worth of rent. May I remind you that most of theses students will NOT get to enjoy the arena as students. EVERY students want a new arena/even center, BUT not at the cost of what Prez Gonzales is demanding. This guy makes over $300,000.00 a year so give me a break! :tothehand:

Your post is pure irony. You rail on previous generations for screwing things up but are not taking advantage of this opportunity to improve things for future generations.

The key statement underlined in the quote is “as students”. Because they could and will come back and enjoy the events center as alumni/fans attending an athletic event or just general public people who may attend another event (concert, presentation, etc). It’s definitely a vote for future generations.

That union you currently enjoy was approved by student that never got to use it, that WELL you enjoy was passed by students (this includes Kadeezy and myself) that never got to use it but we made the decision to approve it to better the university as a whole as well as the campus life of future students.

As far as the money issue there is no argument. It is a significant fee increase, especially for those who work their way through college and are not on financial aid or having their parents pick up the tab. That said if you are pursing a degree that is work a damn $500 a year ain’t sh!t and you will earn that money back in no time.

That was not an attacked on previous generations, that was a defense against an obscene comment ("Millenial morons")...please don't turn things around.

We appreciate the Union and the Well, but you're a little out of touch with the current crisis that is going on with the CSU system. Money needs to be spent on professors, as student are graduating 2-3 years late because of shortage in staff. In 2004, the economy was rising, it was easier to pass stuff like this. Now, the economy is recovering, 2 different things. $500 IS shit if you're not a sport/concerts' fan and the only event you'll will using be using the Rec Center is for graduation.

Like I said, don't get me wrong I'm a sport fan, that's why i'm on this blog. I craved a new arena. But NOT with the current proposal. It Puts WAY too much burden on the current student body. (We wan't to build for the future, but not at the expense of student's going hungry or having to get a bigger loan even though they do not have a purpose for the Rec center). This proposal was an attempt for Prez Gonzales to leave a legacy WITHOUT any regards to the student body. The current student body as a majority is NOT happy with this one sided proposal. And THAT is the current state of the University.

All Sac State students have done what they had to do to go to Sac State and get their degrees. Every generation of Sac State students had their challenges and financial struggles. And many of us our alumni now and give generously to current Sac State students to help them with their education. And we alum have good jobs that provide tax revenues for Sac State to enjoy. It is all relative.
The Sac State alumni giving is superior. Confident that most Sac State students want to see a better Sac State then what they had. Being a student is a few years. Being an alum is forever and having the best facilities, the best athletic program and the best university academically will be a source of pride that is priceless.

Remember that the mission of Sac State is Leadership. "Leadership Begins Here"..Sacramento State.

Anxious to see the result of the vote.

I was just pointing out the circular nature of the comment. I feel that it is relevant.

A proposition (30 I think) was passed a year ago that supposedly was going to solve the educational funding problem. Seems like that complaint should be taken up with Gov Brown. Secondly tuition provides for the academic side of things with these student fees covering other “needs”. I roll my eyes when I see comments like, “this fee should go for the academic side of things.” A basic understanding of the fee/tuition structure at the CSU allows one to realize how ridiculous some statements about these fees are.

In 2004, the economy was rising, it was easier to pass stuff like this. Now, the economy is recovering, 2 different things.
In 2004 there was also a “oh my God tuition increases are outrageous” argument. So long as the sun continues to rise in the east and set in the west then there will always be this complaint. And FYI the 2004 referendum did not pass easily, it narrowly passed and the campus is much better because of it.

The events center is more than a sports/concert thing. It’s a revenue generator that has the potential to host various local and regional events and would serve as a nice asset for not only the campus but the community at large. As a student I’ve attended job fairs on campus in which the union ballroom was not large enough, seems to me that the events center would easily house such an event and this is something all students would appreciate.

Like I said it ain’t shit if you graduate with a degree worth a damn. I stand by that, if I knew the offers I would get after graduation I would have never complained about the various fees and tuition increases as a student. If you make the right degree choice, the ROI of your tuition will be ridiculous.

Like I said, don't get me wrong I'm a sport fan, that's why i'm on this blog. I craved a new arena. But NOT with the current proposal. It Puts WAY too much burden on the current student body. Fair enough and it’s nice having some student input on these boards so we are glad you are here. $500 a year provides a strong sticker shock reflex for those scratching thru college, I was there and know what it’s like. If Gonzo is truly resting his legacy on this center than he will forcibly enact the fee regardless of the vote. I don't think he will but you never know.

What is it they say about the millennials? Ah yes. The 'me me me' generation. Listen to the wise advice of SD and JP. They took the time to lay it out for you in a very nice and respectful way. They speak from the perspective that you will have one day as an alumni. The degree you earn from this school will pay you back many times over.

Oh my... Not even sure where to jump in on this, so I won't. Ik assuming since we haven't herd anything about the vote, the Center didn't pass?

Per State Hornet Twitter:
.@sacstate Voting for a new student event center and fee has closed. No word yet on the results-- Stay tuned to twitter for more news.

Weird since all voting is done online. Maybe the heavy rain yesterday kept people from voting (although I have no idea why that would matter). A low turnout would be good for any chance of this passing.

Looks like it got its ass kicked:

.@sacstate Breaking News-- Results show that students overwhelmingly voted "no" for the proposed event center. #BREAKING #statehornet

Not really surprised. Think the school is going to the well one too many times, trying to 'ask' students to pay for "sport activities and facilities," after saving the football team in the 90's and getting the Fieldhouse and Well approved a decade ago. If they are going to to do it, the new President is just going to have to force it through. With the rising cost of tuition, no way students are going to agree to what is basically an arena tax that won't be finished until they are gone. I love Sac State athletics and have for all of my life, but if I was a struggling college kid I would have had to really think about agreeing to spend that kind of money.

Yup, not surprised at all. Doubtful Gonzo forces it through:
.@sacstate “The democratic process has been followed," said President Alexander Gonzalez in a press release. #BREAKING #statehornet

Unfortunately, people are more motivated to vote against something. Hard to get a positive vote on something like this unless there was an adversary to vote against.

Not even remotely close:
.@sacstate Turn out for proposed event center results in a record number of votes. 7000 students voted no, at 79.6 percent to 20.4 percent.

Largest student turnout for a vote I ever seen. Maybe next decade this will have a chance...but I doubt it.

At a time when tuition is crazy skyrocketing, there just was no shot. Gonna have to find another way than the backs of the students.

Meh. Prices in everything is always rising. Problem is they had inexperienced students running the campaign for a huge project. They essentially asked the other students would like to pay more. Answer is always no. If you want it to have a shot, you have to combine it with something more palatable or tangible.

On to the new kings arena sharing idea. This lopsided vote is too toxic for an incoming pres to mess with.

Yup, no way the next Pres will touch this topic for a very long time…and rightfully so. I’m not putting the blame on that Coms class that lead this effort, the blame falls on Gonzo. The only way this thing passes is if it is coupled with private fundraising to lower the fee burden to be paid by the students. That is what was sold in 2004 and helped it pass then. The private monies never materialized (or were used on the Fieldhouse after Spanos reneged on his pledge) so the event center portion was never built.

In the meantime Macriss needs to look into renting the new Kings arena for at least a few games to draw some notable regional opponents (Pac12, MWC) for the hoops program. Think along the lines of how baseball uses Raley Field to supplement its schedule.

Enjoy whatever government/CSU fee increase comes your way next semester anyways you dullards...

Hope they get hit with a 10% tuition increase next semester, focking selfish ass roaches. Always wanting something for free.

Gonzo uses a bigger tampon than Richard Simmons. And maybe Bruce Jenner too.

In reality, I would like to see the new Pres come in and downgrade the whole program back to D2. The facilities are sub-par at that level too. Seriously, we could play the Humboldt's, CWU's of the world and rock the NCAC again. With limited schollies the students would get a refund of their ASI money and be happy little socialist pigs.

I didn't mean to imply it was the students fault. If Gonzo really wanted this done, it would have been handled differently. He wants to leave office without being blamed for not getting it done. So he made the students the scapegoats. Both the Comm students and the voting students.
