By chance, she has a meeting tomorrow with him and will bring up this topic.

Apparently, Gonzo got cold feet about the funding because the wages were raised for the people who would work there and it changed the funding model. Not sure how that would effect funding, but whatever. He is going to postpone the project until he has more time to review, he felt next semester was too soon and rushed to push the project through. That was her excuse.

Bummed to hear of this news about the new SEC........how many more years do we endure a facility that was outdated decades ago.

Get the same calls for donations and will not be giving any longer.
 
I'm spit balling here, but does anyone think the administration has met with the city and Kings regarding a possible deal to become renters and the arena's 2nd tenant? It may be crazy, but also may explain why Gonzo felt the need to scratch the event center.
 
I wouldn’t rule it out, and a deal to play some games (both men and women) in the new downtown arena needs to be a top priority if the student events center (SEC) is in fact done for the foreseeable future (per the State Hornet it sounds pretty dead, no reason to care about hoops now).

My guess (credit GCM with the assist here) is that the most likely reason for the change in attitude is the lack of available private money for the SEC. Per the FAQ’s page on the Well Expansion website, the goal is to have $45M of private monies raised by the start of the project. Gonzo probably couldn’t coble together any investors in the short time frame since most, if not all of the local business monies are going towards the Kings arena.

Aside from that the only other hope is that the SEC is revisited when new leadership comes in (hopefully Gonzo and Wanless retire soon). The referendum that passed in 2004 specifically calls out for construction of an on campus events center. Unless there is some kind of time frame limit on the referendum, there will always be something written and approved by students to keep this alive.

The issue in the future will be that a stand-alone predominately athletics purposed facility project will face the full brunt of criticism from students and faculty. This was the perfect opportunity to get the thing built under the guise of a Well and Union expansion. This was an enormously missed opportunity by Gonzo, Wanless and the entirety of Sac State leadership as a whole. I have no faith in them whatsoever from this point forward to push for the betterment of Hornet athletics.

Gonzo was castrated when he received a no confidence vote from the faculty. He has been a eunuch ever since. Punched out long ago.

Agree, we, as fans, have no hope for the betterment of this program under the current administration. Even Portland State is building a new arena, confirmed. So that leaves good ole Suck State as the lone laughable facility in the conference. And nation.
 
Join me in boycotting all things Sac State until an Events Center in green-lighted (or at least an alternative is put in place) and the athletics program as a whole sees improvement... List your name (handle or real) and what you changing about your contributions. I will send the list to Gonzo, Wanless, and a few others I know. Maybe link this from other threads???


1. Kadeezy- I will not renew my football/basketball season tix going forwards. No more monetary contributions over the phone (as small as mine were) from me! Also, I will not purchase another piece of Sac State licensed apparel from the bookstore, WalMart, or anywhere else.

And see today that Sac State will host the 2018 NCAA track meet at Hornet Stadium. So we now have a football stadium with a track around it for at least 5 more years in order to host a track meet.

I know I'm outvoted here, but I actually LOVE this....
 
So do I SH. Actually, cross country and track and field are my favorite sporting events so I'm happy we're getting a new track; I also attend nearly all the hoop and football games at home.

When Sac State hosted the Olympic Trials, there were 20,000 to 24,000 fans in the seats every day for the 8 days of the meet and our stadium has lousy sight lines for track; it'd take our football team four seasons to get that many people to come watch them. So, I hope we get the State high school T@F meet in 2016; I never miss it; that'll draw more than 10,000 each day too.

Well K I've already sent in my "boycott" emails (not that they care).

I know its wishful thinking but I sure hope some kind of support facility will be put in conjunction with the track to ease the horrid concession and bathroom situation at Hornet Stadium. Otherwise those T&F events will be completely miserable.
 
See on Hornetsports.com today the new scoreboards for Shea softball stadium and Hornet soccer stadium.
Very nice upgrades. Permanent seating for the soccer stadium and permanent restrooms and concessions for bothstadiums and those facilities will be complete.
 
forgot to mention how nice it would be to have lights for night contests for both stadiums as well. And often wondered if portable lighting systems could be purchased and used for both stadiums and even shared with baseball short of permanent lighting for all.

Check the proposed Master Plans, they all call for the soccer, baseball and softball stadiums to be moved. Nothing too permanent going into either locations. Now I understand why nothing has been done over the years other than a coat of lipstick.
 
Gonzo mentioned ground is suppose to break on a new dorm in the next year - year and a half. It's planned to open in fall 2017 and will house 350 residents. I couldn't find a link the article but it's in the PDF version of the latest State Hornet:

While Sacramento State University Enterprises Inc. was planning to open a Starbucks location in the old Copy Graphics building near the Riverfront Center at the start of the semester, the completion of the project will be delayed until late spring.

The final master plan meeting/presentation is Monday February 10th in the Union Ballroom III at 1 pm and 6 pm.
 
Anxious to learn more about the Feb. 10th meetings. Great to learn more about another new dorm. Wonder if this means a new dorm to replace Draper and jenkins Hall from the 1960s or an actual new dorm in addition to those awful two dorms that remain standing .. Foley Hall like Draper and Jenkins was torn down to put up the American River complex. Still plenty of housing around campus that is privately owned where many students live and walk to campus. Sac State is less of a full on commuter school when u consider this housing which is right over the river.

Any news of the Events Center going forward would be great.

I sent out the video of the amazing basketball win against Weber State last Sat. and many people wrote me back and said that was an amazing win for "that high school team". They all thought it was a high school game by looking at Hornet Gym. I had to remind them it was a Sac State game. They said "oh my, u guys need a new facility".
