New HC Blind Hopes and Wishes

More from JoeD and the Bee:
Sacramento State president Luke Wood tweeted Monday late afternoon addressed to Bee reporter Joe Davidson and ESPN’s Schefter that “Vick and I did meet about Sac State football and our athletic rise. As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs that our football head coach job is an attractive role. Announcements on several major decisions coming soon.”

Sacramento State athletic director Mark Orr told The Bee late last week that “a crazy amount of national interest.” He added: “There’s been significant interest, more than ever before for football. There’s interest from people who have coached in the NFL, college, Power 4 programs in the FCS and from the FCS, head coaches, assistant coaches, coordinators.”

Orr added that Sacramento State needs to hire a coach before Christmas: “Our student-athletes need to know, our community needs to know,” Orr said. “The transfer portal is open. Our signed recruits need to know. Our program is seen as a good one, and it’s in a good light.”

And more regarding Michael Vick:
Speaking from his Florida home, Vick told the Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press that he had spoken with Norfolk State officials and that he expected resolution “soon.” He did not respond to the newspapers about the Sacramento State rumors.

The fact that Vick did not respond to the Sac State rumors hints to me that there isn't much there. Likely just due diligence from the Hornets administration, since they reportedly have seen a lot of interest in the position.

Assuming what Mark Orr says about "crazy interest" being true, and not hyperbole, this signals two things to me:

One, Troy Taylor's 3-season tenure proved to outside coaches that something can indeed be built here.

Two, that the possibility of SAC promoting to FBS and potentially the Pac-12 is also intriguing to potential candidates.

Circling back specifically to Vick, given the amount of reported interest in this program from experienced coaches, I'd be surprised if he got the nod having no previous coaching experience. But you never know what Orr and Wood might be thinking.

IMO it really depends upon the level of the candidates that are also interested. I mean, former NFL and P4 coaches would be hard to pass on if the interest is serious and they are affordable.

Not worth the risk. No coaching experience and it could end poorly, setting the program back even further. I don't care for the personal baggage he brings too.
I agree. This is reminiscent of UOP's 2016 hire of Damon Stoudamire to lead the basketball program; he bolted for the Celtics in 2021 and is now leading GA Tech. Not only is SacRat's contention key, Vick taking over and then pulling a Neon a couple of years down the road will only bring more instability in the too-near future.

My choices, most of whom are rooted in the area, likely wouldn't treat Sac as a carpetbagging stop. I acknowledge, though, that others may have other opinions on who to hire, and I certainly welcome the brainstorming. Michael Vick isn't the answer in my book, though....

Yikes. Vick would definitely be a splash but the risk of limited coaching experience is scary. Only so much personal development can be gained as captain of an American Flag Football League team or almost being an AAF offensive coordinator.

Was just reading over the weekend on how Trent Dilfer has been a big miss so far at UAB, having jumped from high school HC to FBS HC based on his NFL experience.

This is an antiquated look at how things are transitioning... Bigger FBS programs are getting GMs - at smaller ones the head coach will be the GM and their duty won't be x's and o's - it'll be recruiting and motivating.

And raising HUGE NIL money....I can't see Vick bringing in the coin to offset the negatives attached to his name (not talking about him as a human now but his past is always going to be attached to some extent)

I don't know. Nobody cared about Vick coaching until Schefter attached his name to Sac State. His name with the right program may bring in money. As long as it's not a gimmick and he has a strong supporting coaching staff, it could pay off.

I'd bet money he's going to Norfolk State and this leak was a negotiation tactic though.

I view the Vick hire as a gimmick and agree that it was probably a strategy by his camp to leverage a potential deal with NSU. While Vick's hire would bring notoriety here, IMO he doesn't have the quals to head up a football program in a competitive conference like the BSC (see UNC, McCaffrey).

Regarding the Vick - PAC angle, I doubt the PAC cares who we hire as HC and it has little, if any, impact on their membership decisions.

Concerns would be lack of HC experience and him living in Florida. Plus, negative past moral judgement. I am all for giving people 2nd chances after corrective reflection, but this topic is polarizing.

Vick would resonate with the players. Sanders was different at Colorado as his son is a legitimate baller and gave Deion a catalyst player.

Orr said a decision by Wednesday?
