New Head Coach Jerry Glanville

So I've held my tongue regarding the head coach search until I did some real thinking on the subject, even though I've been tempted to post things both here and on the OL forum. So here's what I've got:

What we need is a coach with some fire, spit, and vinegar who has the energy and motivation to coach at PSU with the inherent limitations on financial resources and publicity. We need a coach who will keep our defense as strong (or stronger) as it has been, and put up 30-40 points a game. That is what will start bringing fans to PSU, some big offense and decimating defense.

After hearing the Glanville rumors, I wasn't sure I wanted to see him come to PSU. I heard some things about him not being motivated and being semi-retired. After reading the articles about his trip to Iraq and how that motivated him, as well as today's article where it says he would offer Mouse Davis to OC position, I think Glanville would be a great hire. He would bring some buzz to PSU just by who he is and his history, and Mouse would bring back the record-breaking offense of the 80's.

I think we need a change at the head coach position. We've been in the Walsh era for quite a long time. Walsh had a good record while he was here, and did some great things, but it seemed that we could never win the big games. If we promote Lupfer to HC, we might get some of the same letdowns from the program. We should keep Lupfer as DC, and have him "study" under Glanville for a few years. After that, he should be ready for a bigger coaching role, either at PSU if Glanville moves on, or a promotion elsewhere. PSU will be a launching pad for coaching careers until we move up to the WAC.

The other candidate that shows promise to me is the OC from Nevada, Chris Klenakis. The promising things about him are that he is an offense minded coach, and that he is currently in the WAC. This could help us move up when we are ready.

My vote is for Glanville as HC, Davis as OC, and Lupfer as DC. I think the players that were at the BBall game last night will be disappointed, but should see the benefit to bringing in this great coaching staff.

I concur.

Glanville/Davis upside: Local media buzz and interest. These two guys alone will increase attendance.

Glanville/Davis downside: What if Lupfer feels passed up and leaves? He's one heck of a DC and it would be horrible if he left.

Can Glanville (HC) Davis (OC) Lupfer (DC) come to fruition? I sure hope so.

If the viking can get glanville he might just put portland st back on the map.
He has done some great things in Hawaii.
And bring in mouse as OC , are kidding me.
Can you say 45 point ave a game.
Just watch last years Hawaii bowl, how they pounded ASU into the ground.
Thats the offense the viking will be running or shall i say throwing.
As a big Hawaii fan and a big viking fan it would be awesome to have coach glanville as head coach of the viking.

I dont understand why Lupfer being the DC is so important. Just to let you know....Glanville runs a 3-4 defense. He will be the DC, there is no question about it.
Lupfer should consider himself lucky if Glanville keeps him at all. These two guys know more great current college coaches and former NFL coaches that would jump at the chance to coach with these two legends. Lupfer should look to get a job at another university. He has been here too long and never coached anywhere else. That in itself....I feel hurt his chance of getting this job....he is just too wet behind the ears. Needs to experience more things at different places and then come back as the head coach at a later date.
IF, and I mean IF, Lupfer is retained he will no question lose the DC title and with it, a pay cut. If anyone within the university tells Glanville who he has to hire....look for him to turn the job down. In my opinion

Has anyone even thought about what this might do for recruiting in the local area and beyond? Coach Glanville: "Here let me give you an autograph and you sign a LOI." HS Prospect: "Oh wow, THE JERRY GLANVILLE! Sure I'll sign." But even if he stays only for a couple years I'm sure this will give PSU the chance at D1 status and a burman hire for a coach who will stay with PSU for a long time. All we'd have to do is make the playoffs each year, go semi-far at least and beat D1 schools out of conferences like the WAC or MWC. It's very attainable and I believe we are already there talent wise. We just need that catalyst that this hire would bring. Jerry Glanville, Mouse Davis we want you.

I think that Lupfer's defensive units over the past couple of years are the reason why a lot of folks think he should be kept on as DC if someone like Glanville comes on as HC.

I'm just telling you that Glanville is going to run a 3-4 defense. He is considered by many to be one of the best 3-4 minds along with Dick LeBeau with the Steelers. There was talk earlier that Glanville was going to be the DC with the Chargers.
Glanville WILL run the 3-4 and Lupfer will be lucky to stay. If he does stay it will not be as the DC, because Glanville will call the defense...he did it in the NFL and does at Hawaii.

It looks like glanville will be the HC, pretty unbelieveable, i hope he sticks around for at least 3 years

also if he is hired, Lupher will have to do something else cause JG will be running his system, and I doubt he would want Lupfer calling his defense

This sure is creating a big buzz in the local media. This could be the start of something special.

If JG shows up here, we will get national attention also

I'm hoping he gets the job, this could be what the program needs

Glanville will still need a defensive cord., and I doubt he would get rid of Lupfer. He has been at PSU longer than any other coach, and has produced solid defenses.Last edited by on 2007-02-23, 19:07; edited 1 time in total

unless JG does the play calling, many coaches do (i.e Bill Belichick) I hope Lupfer will stay

Not sure if this was posted or not...

"We have an interest in each other, and we'll see where it goes from there,"

PSU needs to make this happen.

I think glanville will take it, in all his other encounters with HC offers, he has blown them off right on the spot, even his own alma mater

This time he actually expressed interest, I think he has the job

I wonder how much money PSU could offer Jerry? Not that he needs the money, but financial offers are a sign of respect and PSU needs to show him that he is worth more then Walsh was.. I think Walsh was making around $135000???

Walsh was pulling down 133k.

Money is always an issue with PSU Athletics. I think that the offer will be a direct indication of the future commitment to athletics at PSU.

im pretty sure walsh's salary was closer to 100k

and about 50k in perksLast edited by on 2007-02-24, 17:42; edited 1 time in total
