So I've held my tongue regarding the head coach search until I did some real thinking on the subject, even though I've been tempted to post things both here and on the OL forum. So here's what I've got:
What we need is a coach with some fire, spit, and vinegar who has the energy and motivation to coach at PSU with the inherent limitations on financial resources and publicity. We need a coach who will keep our defense as strong (or stronger) as it has been, and put up 30-40 points a game. That is what will start bringing fans to PSU, some big offense and decimating defense.
After hearing the Glanville rumors, I wasn't sure I wanted to see him come to PSU. I heard some things about him not being motivated and being semi-retired. After reading the articles about his trip to Iraq and how that motivated him, as well as today's article where it says he would offer Mouse Davis to OC position, I think Glanville would be a great hire. He would bring some buzz to PSU just by who he is and his history, and Mouse would bring back the record-breaking offense of the 80's.
I think we need a change at the head coach position. We've been in the Walsh era for quite a long time. Walsh had a good record while he was here, and did some great things, but it seemed that we could never win the big games. If we promote Lupfer to HC, we might get some of the same letdowns from the program. We should keep Lupfer as DC, and have him "study" under Glanville for a few years. After that, he should be ready for a bigger coaching role, either at PSU if Glanville moves on, or a promotion elsewhere. PSU will be a launching pad for coaching careers until we move up to the WAC.
The other candidate that shows promise to me is the OC from Nevada, Chris Klenakis. The promising things about him are that he is an offense minded coach, and that he is currently in the WAC. This could help us move up when we are ready.
My vote is for Glanville as HC, Davis as OC, and Lupfer as DC. I think the players that were at the BBall game last night will be disappointed, but should see the benefit to bringing in this great coaching staff.
