Ok I've added a poll on here for the guessing to begin. I added the names from Schumacher's story today, plus two of the favored assistants we have had during Jerome's run: Jared Barrett and Zac Claus. Feel free to vote and discuss here. If you click Other as your choice, please explain who you would choose and why.

I'm thinking Cravens is probably the number one choice of Wanless, but I would LOVE to see Barrett (UTVS)and Claus (UNR) back in town. Both are excellent recruiters, great guys, media friendly, they are COACHES first.

Good choices. I think what we need is someone who has been a head coach...especially one in this conference, who has been very successful. I mean Weber doesn't tolerate any sub .500 seasons and that's why Joe got the axe there. They won it all last year with all of his recruits with Rahe at the helm. Jermaine Boyette is still one of the best players I have ever seen in this conference.

I'm not sure Cravens would want to come to Sac State even though he needs a job. There's one VERY obvious local choice that hasn't been talked about yet -- Brian Katz, the head coach at Delta College. Katz is a former Center HS head coach, as well as a former Santa Clara assistant, and has had an unbelievably good run at Delta. He's also highly respected among his coaching peers, including most of the local high school coaches and fellow JC coaches. Katz would bring instant credibility to Sac State and, FINALLY, we'd actually see some local players attending! I'm betting Katz would be ready to make the jump to D-1.

SCFP...never thought about Katz. Thanks for your insight! I do know for a fact that Cravens has expressed his interest to athletic dept. staff and I overheard Carl Arky (Weber's Radio Guy) talking about it on Monday night to Hornet staffers. So he is interested...question will be, will he be offered the job?

Good update on Cravens. However, I think one of the major problems during Jenkins' run was his apparent refusal to recruit locally. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you can be successful in D-1 by only recruiting local players. However, the HS and JC basketball in this area is pretty good -- to refuse to recruit in this area was just plain stupid. Katz would walk in with a rolodex (does anyone still use a rolodex??!!) full of close contacts with just about every local coach. As I mentioned before, Katz is one of the most respected coaches around and would also bring an impressive list of references (Ben Howland, Rick Majerus, Dick Davey and many more). In addition to his recruiting prowess, he's also one damn good coach. I think it could be a natural choice in much the same way Sperbeck was a natural for the football job.

So really the big question will be: do we want someone who has DI head coaching experience, especially in this conference and someone who fairly knows the area for recruiting; do we want someone who has never been a DI head coach, but has been an assistant at the school and in this league for years and has (tried to at least) recruited in this area; do we want someone who has never been a DI head coach but has been an assistant, but not in this league and who has been a JC head coach in the area and recruits here everyday?

Take a look at what Wanless says are mandatory qualities for the next coach: (1) "...understand recruiting, and the role it takes in building a basketball program," (2) "...have to be a very strong fundamental teacher of the game," (3) "...have to be a very good strategist," and (4) "...somebody that can create a synergy between the men's basketball program and the Sacramento community." I think Katz fits the bill in every category with his strongest suit being that he completely understands the Sacramento community, both from a recruiting standpoint as well as being able to build support for the program within a wide range of the community -- there would be no get-up-to-speed time for him in getting to know community leaders and organizations. Additionally, he's already proven he's an outstanding strategist, recruiter, and teacher of basketball.

Why not some proven home grown talent? I am an alum, fan and high school coach. I nominate Brian Katz, long time and very successful head coach of Delta College in Stockton. I have been watching him for years. He would bring badly needed credibility and success to our program.

Katz is definitely interested in the job. Apparently, he will be hand-delivering his resume tomorrow. I don't think there's any drama to "new users" posting for Katz. I know him very well and, as a Sacramento resident and huge hoops fan, think he's the natural choice....much like Sperbeck was a natural choice for the football job. I would love to see Sac State basketball at a highly competitive level, and Katz is the guy to take them there.

I have known Brian Katz since his day's at Lassen College in 1990. I have been a High School Football/ Softball Coach since then. I have learned more about Coaching and more importantly more about life from Brian than anyone I have ever been associated with. I make at least 5 trips a year to watch his team's play from Susanville because of how sound they are and how hard they play. More importantly I want to learn from someone I consider to be a master Coach. Coach Katz has won everywhere he has been and it would be no different at Sacramento St. I know for a fact he is applying and that if this happens Sac St. will not only be getting a great Coach but a great human being who will develop better people and that this will be a team people will enjoy watching and enjoy being around his players. I can also guarantee the graduation rate will go way way up among basketball players.

Based on the comments Wanless made about his criteria for the next coach, I think Sperbeck provided a model for the characteristics and skill sets needed to succeed. I can't tell you how excited I am that Jenkins is gone!! Anytime I would attend a game I would leave extremely frustrated over the poor coaching tactics he displayed, as well as how poor he treated his team (always yelling - never teaching)!

This is a tremendous opportunity for Wanless - when was the last time we had a solid football coach and a solid basketball coach - AT THE SAME TIME?? This is HUGE!!

Bob Mattos and Jack Heron...man that was a long time ago.

In response to Kadeezy, MY registration on this site was initiated to mention and promote Katz for the job. I heard from another bbball junkie that this was a place it was being discussed. I like the site and will stay active on it. I also think my experience with Katz, my coaching background, and history in this area (alum from Sac State '89) makes my opinion at least as credible as the next guy's. The Sac State program has had too many false starts and needs a proven recruiter, teacher and winner. The school, community and most of all the players deserve it. Katz is very well known and respected, which means we likely get more of the good local talent to consider staying instead of playing elsewhere. He is also well respected among his coaching peers at all levels, including some of the biggest names in Division I basketball. I know this because I have attended several of the annual coach's clinics for which Katz is largely responsible for organizing. These coaches come here because Katz asks them too--they don't get paid, with all proceeds going to a local charity. That clinic has drawn some great coaches over the last few years--Rick Majerus, Trent Jones, Bob Hurley of St. Anthony's, Dick Davey, Dick Bennett, Billie Gillespie, among others.

BlueFin: Thanks for all the info. I didn't know how well he is known...of course you would never know it or didn't know it because of the media in this town and how they completely overlook all local college athletics (SAC, the JC's, etc.). Should be an interesting mix of candidates who will raise the bar just by applying. I for one am excited by the prospect of it.
