GCM, the scholarship costs have gone up as well. It now costs $1,779 a semester for an in-state, full-time student...which is now double what I paid back in the 90's. Heck even four years ago, it cost about $1K a semester. Plus add in rising costs for books and room and board that full scholly athletes get and those costs have gone through the roof. I know the department has added more staffers as well in addition to being able to raise the salaries of the current staff, and the full benefits package costs are there.

I understand your frustration, but you should see how bad the fiscally it is out here. At least it isn't as bad where you are...except for the drought :-p

I agree costs have gone up. Just for fun....

400 full scholarship student athletes at $5,000 each is $2M
Coaches/staff, salaries/benefits (guesstimate) is $4M
Department travel (guesstimate) is $1M
Various operating costs (guesstimate) is $3M

According to data filed with the NCAA, we actually made a profit overall, so the home game costs/gate receipts are a wash.

That leaves roughly $2M on the table. Am I missing something? And we can't pay our DI Men's basketball HC more than $88K a year?

We actually received 2 inches of rain, keep it coming!

Katz is definitely my pick, I know that with a guaranteed 5 year turn around time, he could turn Sac State basketball around for the better, which is exactly what they need. Katz is an amazing coach (his record speaks for itself), and he is an honest man who doesn't mess around with the games that coaches play now-a-days... best bet is Katz for sure.

Make that 5 new registered users vouching for Katz. Hmmm...

If this guy is so great, why has he been stuck in the JC ranks for so long?

So why hasn't Katz dipped his toes in Div I waters til now? Don't know, but it's probably a big plus. GIven where the current Hornet program is, and the comparatively low salary, anyone who comes here WITH Div I experience ISN'T likely passing on another gig...that one surely pays more with better fringes. What we have in Katz is a proven local guy, a history of winning at a school where there's all kinds of good excuses for competitive mediocrity, strong local and regional ties, and probably the desire to stay in the area--he's got kids in local schools here. Hopefully he didn't read about the crappy salary and isn't opposed to food stamps...

From the Stockton Record yesterday...

STOCKTON - Delta College men's basketball coach Brian Katz said he is interested in pursuing the vacant head coaching job at his alma mater, Sacramento State.

On Friday, the school dismissed men's basketball coach Jerome Jenkins following the Hornets' 4-24 season and last-place finish in the Big Sky Conference. Katz said he has not yet been contacted by Sacramento State athetlic director Terry Wanless but plans to submit his resume Monday.

"I have interest in the job," Katz said. "I went to school there. I've lived in Sacramento for 44 of my 50 years. It's the one job (at a four-year university) that I'd be interested in without a doubt."

Katz has compiled a 348-148 record with six league championships and six conference coach of the year awards at Delta since 1993.

Katz was mentioned as a possible candidate in an article in Saturday's Sacramento Bee. The list also included former Weber State head coach Joe Cravens, Washington assistants Cameron Dollar and Jim Shaw, Saint Mary's associate head coach Kyle Smith, Idaho Stampede (NBA Developmental League) assistant Guy Beach and NBA advance scout Clay Moser.

Wanless laid out the qualities he wants in a replacement.

"One, they have to understand recruiting, and the role it takes in building a basketball program," he told The Sacramento Bee. "I think they have to be a very strong fundamental teacher of the game.

"I think they have to be a very good strategist and probably the fourth is somebody that can create a synergy between the men's basketball program and the Sacramento community."

Wanless followed similar criteria in 2007 when he hired football coach Marshall Sperbeck, who was at Foothill College in Los Altos for 15 years.

Katz might be an attractive hire, given his Sacramento ties and past success.

Katz graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in English in 1980. He was the head boys basketball coach from 1983-87 at Center High School in Sacramento, where his teams made three Sac-Joaquin Section playoff appearances and won one Golden Empire League title.

Katz made two NIT appearances as an assistant coach under Carroll Williams at Santa Clara University from 1987-89 before he built an 87-47 record as the head coach at Lassen College in Susanville from 1989-93. Katz succeeded Rob DeWitt at Delta and has since led the Mustangs to two appearances in the quarterfinals of the state community college tournament, including one trip to the Final Four. Katz is 435-185 (.701) in 19 seasons as a community college head coach.

Jenkins was 80-147 in eight seasons at Sacramento State, and led the Hornets to the semifinals of the Big Sky tournament in 2003 and 2006.

"Obviously, it would be a tremendous challenge," Katz said. "But there's great potential."

Make that 5 new registered users vouching for Katz. Hmmm...

What does it matter if people are new users? I find it interesting that there are so many people who feel strongly about Katz. If we only listened to the long term posters on the board there would be 3-4 voices.

I'm all for new users. That's why I linked the site on SacBee.com. I just wish someone familiar with Sac State and our program who is a regular on this board could tell me why Katz is a good option because I had never even heard of the guy.

Don't get me wrong, I love the extra opinions and people talking this issue up and by all means, don't stop. I'm just hesitant to believe that Katz is the choice based solely on the thoughts and opinons of his impromptu fan club (or so it seems).

It's hard to discredit Katz just because he hasn't made the jump to a D1 school yet. Sperbeck's resume looks pretty similar, and I think most people on this board are pretty happy with him thus far.

I want to hire the most qualified person - based on his ability to TEACH basketball, make game adjustments (both stregnths of Jenkins), recruit, connect with the community, and build character in his players. If that's a JC coach or D1 guy I don't care - just someone of substance. But please not someone who wasn't successful before (the SUU guy - NO WAY)!!

Kadeezy, if you are "all for new users" you wouldn't act like those of us who are new and are on here to voice our opinions on Katz are so suspicious. We're obviously on here because we have strong opinions about the guy, just because you don't know him doesn't mean you should rule him out. I would take a guess to say that he never took the plunge into gunning for a D1 position because of the added stress it would put on himself, his family, the fact that D1 players, coaches, and schools are a whole new ball game, and his obvious attachment to Delta and everything he knows and has built there. That's just a guess, however.

I like the fact that Katz has asked for the job. We want someone with passion and obviously skills and a track record. Given that he is an alum and is knowledgeable of the region, so far I'd have to say Katz is the leading candidate. I have never heard of him either, but I am a football guy.

Hey all...good discussion going on. Before this gets out of hand, I just want to remind folks to respond to the topic and not the poster per se. I think its great we have new people coming on here and voicing their support for Katz. I never had heard of them until this came about. I think he is very much a leading candidate based on his past success at Center High, Lassen and Delta. Also having an alum never hurts ;-)

So just as a friendly FYI, respond to topic and try to keep personal responses out. (Mod hat off). Thanks!

Go Hornets!

Whatever, we're getting off topic. I never ruled him out. I just wanted to know more about the guy and get some of the board regulars' opinions. I would love to try and get ahold of Katz for a Q and A for this message board. Does anyone have his e-mail?

Jared Barrett is very knowledgeable and has been an underated DI assistant for the past seven years. If nothing else, he should at least get a shot at interviewing with Wanless for the opening.

He has recruited this region before and knows what it takes to win at Sac State. He's a player's coach, but at the same time, he KNOWS THE GAME. He won't makes substitutions every 30 seconds and will give the players we have now a chance to win.

He's young, personable, and has the potential to be a great fundraiser and when needed, "schmoozer" with the supporters of the program (unlike Jenkins).

If Jared Barrett is the level of coach you want then we might as well pack up and cancel the program. I want someone with substance and a track record. He only has one year with a winning record (15-14 this year with UVSU), and six years with Jenkins - I'm sure he learned a lot! We settled with Jenkins - NOT AGAIN.

Old Hornet,

Barrett was a huge part of the team's successful runs to the BSC tournament. I know for a fact that the players loved him and that they would play their butts off for him.

He's really the anti-Jenkins, so don't think you would be getting more of the same with him at the helm.

I'm wondering if Barrett will even apply or if he's loving life in Orem, UT (which I doubt). Regardless, I'm beginning to think I would be happy with Barrett, Cravens, or Katz.

I will tell you why Katz has never moved up the ladder. The Sac St. job is the only Division 1 job he would take. He lives in Sacramento and drives to Stockton everyday so he can be close to his family. He actually took the Delta job so he could live in Sacramento and be close to his daughter from a previous marriage. His family is the #1 thing in his life and he would never move away from his daughter or now his kids through a new marriage. Wheather or not he get's the job he will always live in Sacramento 5 minutes from Sac St.
