Next coach?

Barret Peery: http://www.santaclarabroncos.com/sports/m-baskbl/coaches/peery_barret?view=bio

Barret Peery is in his first season as associate head coach for Santa Clara men's basketball.
Peery most recently spent one season (2014-15) as an assistant coach at Arizona State under Herb Sendek.
Before joining Arizona State, Peery coached Indian Hills Community College where he went 34-3 in 2013-14, winning region and district titles. In his three seasons, his teams went 60-1 at home.

Peery guided more than 15 players to Division I scholarships in his three-year tenure at the Iowa school and his 93-11 mark was highlighted by high-scoring offense. His 2012-13 squad averaged a school-record 97.9 points per game and reached the century mark 14 times. His first team at Indian Hills turned in a 33-4 record and that 2011-12 squad went undefeated in conference play. The Warriors were in the top 10 in the nation in scoring average and winning margin en route to the school’s tenth 30-win season. Five players from that team signed with NCAA Division I schools.
In taking the IHCC head job, Peery returned to the junior college ranks where he got his start as a head coach and enjoyed tremendous success. He took College of Southern Idaho to the NJCAA Division I national tournament twice in three years as head coach, finishing fourth in 2007.

Peery, the 2007-08 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year, led College of Southern Idaho to three straight league championships—including an outright title in 2007-08. The Golden Eagles were the No. 1-ranked junior college team in the nation for the last four weeks of the regular season and finished with a 30-2 overall record and a 14-1 league mark.

In 2006-07, CSI went 30-7 under Peery and placed fourth at in the nation. In Peery's first year as the CSI head coach, the 2005-06 team posted a 25-10 record, won the Region 18 championship and participated in the NJCAA national tournament.

In those three seasons at CSI, Peery’s teams were 85-19 (.817). Two of his three teams led the nation in scoring. During his tenure, Peery placed 23 players in NCAA Division I programs, including all nine sophomores from the 2007-08 team. Peery was at Southern Idaho for five years, the first two as an assistant coach under Gib Arnold. A native of Payson, Utah, Peery arrived at Indian Hills after three years as an assistant coach under Jim Boylen at the University of Utah.

Prior to going to CSI, he was the top assistant at Portland State for one year, also serving as the recruiting coordinator. He helped bring in the class that took the program from five wins to 19 wins in his lone season.

Peery also coached for four years at Southern Utah University where he was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator. While at Southern Utah he helped lead that school to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and a 25-6 record. He also coached at Snow College and Utah Valley State College.

Peery played college basketball at Snow and Southern Utah. He helped lead Southern Utah to two conference championships and, as a senior, earned academic all-league honors and was a co-captain. In high school, Peery was a three-year basketball letterwinner and was named to the all-region and all-state teams in Utah.

Peery and his wife Tracy have four children: daughter, Kennedy and sons Crew, Whitton, and Meyer.

Looks like the presser will be on Thursday.

What I remember from Boise days... Southern Idaho had a long-time good program with recruiting, tended to have that reputation by the time I moved there. It waned in 2000 or so. Peery gets credited with bringing that back. I suppose that works.

Chuckling at all the Duck fans upset that PSU did not hire Jackson. It's like they were all standing in line buying season tickets when they got the word.

Good JC connections, high scoring offense, an impressive record as a head coach and a west coast presence. I think this could be a really good hire.

I noticed that as well on Oregonlive. Odd perception that a former Duck would instantly create a huge funnel of money from Phil Knight to our basketball program.

I like our hire. Good experience and it's nice that he'd been here for a year so he knows what the challenges are here.

His enthusiasm reminds me a lot of Heath Schroyer, who did so many good things for the program before he was swept up as a well-placed assistant.

My guess is, if he is indeed successful, we can probably hold on to him for about three years.

List of Coaches Since Program's Reinception

Ritchie McKay
1996-97..... 9-17 (Starting from scratch)
1997-98.....15-12 (Nice improvement ... Stepping stone to Colorado State!)

Joel Sobotka.....Promoting assistants up to head coach doesn't work for us. Only Burman Class Hires do.
1998-99.....17-11 (Riding Ritchie's momentum, good; now, what can you add yourself?)
1999-00.....15-14 (Oops, slipped a bit; let's see if you can recover and relaunch)
2000-01.....9-18 (Definite crash-and-burn; should have let go right here)
2001-02.....12-16 (A grace year, why?! Back to sub-mediocrity; out of college head coaching)

Heath Schroyer
2002-03..... 5-22 (Tearing Sobotka's system down to build up anew)
2003-04.....11-16 (Big change, but are you any better than Sobotka?)
2004-05.....19-9 (Wow, guess so, what an improvement! Stepping stone to Wyoming!)

Ken Bone
2005-06.....12-16 (Wow, you matched Sobotka in your first year)
2006-07.....19-13 (Yes, that's what we want to see: Winning seasons, on and on)
2007-08.....23-10 (Wow, you made more headway; I wish you'd stay with us)
2008-09.....23-10 (You're capable of sustaining this record. Stepping stone to Washington State!)

Tyler Geving.....OMG, we're repeating the Joel Sobotka error.
2009-10.....13-19 (Not so bad for a first year)
2010-11.....14-16 (Are you topping out already?)
2011-12.....17-15 (Hey, maybe you are a chip off the ole Bone)
2012-13..... 8-20 (Crash-and-burn, guess you aren't able to sustain it on your own, guess you're gone now)

2013-14.....17-15 (Must have begged for your life, but you're back up again to where you were, what's next?)
2014-15.....15-14 (C'mon, man, you're going the wrong way; don't you have any gratitude?)
2015-16.....13-18 (What is this? Insult to injury? Knock that crap off!)
2016-17.....15-16 (You're just jerking us around, aren't you? A perpetual assistant coach most probably)

Barret Peery.....Prediction
2017-18.....12-16 (A Ken Bone-like start)
2018-19.....19-13 (A Ken Bone-like second year)
2019-20.....23-10 (A Ken Bone-like third year; Stepping stone to Oregon State!)

No More Promoting Up Assistant Coaches.
Fresh Burman Class Hires Only!
Sobotka and Geving were "Placeholder Coaches."

When Ken Bone was completing his second 23-10 season, John Canzano kept writing how he should move onward and upward and stop short-changing himself at pathetic ole PSU.

Paradoxically, he is also one to advocate upgrading our hockey standard from the WHL to the NHL. I completely agree and have advocted the same thing for years. I'm sure he'd be a proponet of MLB to Portland if all were arranged to make it happen.

So, what I'm curious about is if he's interested in upgrading professional sports in Portland, why not the college football and basketball scenes as well? Why not recommend ways PSU could keep coaches like Ken Bone to make it a mutually beneficial relationship rather than be so insistent that he depart and cash in his just desserts?

In my opinion, Ken Bone set sail for WSU prematurely. I believe he could have done much better there had he simply ignored Canzano's urging and stayed to season what he had started at Portland State. When he had gotten to the point of being well-seasoned himself, he would have known it and entered into the next phase of his career with great confidence and readiness. I believe, then, he would have succeeded handily at a place like WSU.

Sometimes the experience we could gain is worth so much more than immediate dollars and cents. I see him as having brought PSU to a new state as a constant contender for the Big Dance. By the time he would have left on his own steam, we might have well had a greater level of support to enable the hiring of a coach worthy to succeed him.

The point is: If Canzano wants to upgrade the sports scene here in his adopted home city, why not also seek the betterment of college sports in the form of what Portland State is and potentially can be? He needs to develop a reasonable and hopeful vision for PSU like the rest of us. He would gain greater endearment within the community as a result, and he could be a strong voice of advocacy.

HoopDirt.com has learned that Kahil Fennell will be named as an assistant coach at Portland State. Fennell has been at UT Permian Basin since 2015, and was recently promoted to associate head coach. During the 2016-17 season, Fennell was part of a staff that led UTPB to the best season in school history, winning 26 games and claiming their first-ever Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament championships. He played collegiately at the University of the Redlands. An official announcement is expected shortly.

First to have the the scoop, but last to get the memo on a university that has re-branded their logo. Eh, I should probably cut them some slack. :-)
