Its safe to say that this year has been a huge disappointment. I'm looking at next year and I'm ever more worried. Who do we have on the current roster that will be a 1st team Big Sky player player next year? How about 2nd team? I'm not seeing either in my opinion. I'm going to say Kozak is our best returning player next year and he is solid at best. Maybe a Big Sky honorable mention level player. Fuller has had a decent RS Freshman year. Davis is a solid, but very average player. All of our true Freshman players have not impressed me much. Diakite has been a complete no show. I thought he was a 4* recruit? Is he still hurt? Kupsas showed some promise before he got hurt, so maybe he steps up next year. Its safe to say that both Zdor and Bares so far have been very big disappointments. They were both very highly recruited players, but they have not showed me much in the 2 years they have been here. Have they not developed? Are they just not that great of players? So frustrating... This is 4 years straight of the program getting worse and worse.. 4 YEARS!!!!!! I get you have a down year here and there, but when you are getting worse 4 years in a row. That can't be a good thing. Weber State has such a huge advantage over the rest of the conference too. I'm not here to shit on the team or program. I like Coach Rahe a lot and love Weber Hoops. I'm sure Coach Rahe feels like shit having gotten worse 4 years in a row. What would you do if you were Coach Rahe? This is what I would do...... Barnes, Jordan, Diakite, and Galuppo are all gone next year. They seem like good kids, but they are not good enough. I would keep Zdor ( I still have hope for him ) Cunningham, Davis, Fuller, Kozak and Kupsas. I would go after the best JC players in the nation. Not best JC players for the Big Sky. I'm talking the cream of the crop. Tell them, if you come here you can start and average 18 PPG right away. I would milk the Damien Lillard name as much as possible. That still has to count for something. Do the same for Grad Transfers. We need at least 3-4 JC or grad transfers to come in and fix this mess ASAP. Maybe get some better assistant coaches. Rahe is not going anywhere with his current contract. I'm tired of sucking at basketball. Unless they bring in some top recruits, then next year could be worse. I sure hope Rahe pulls a 2007 and brings us from worst to first like that first year. That was a fun season. Honestly though, what would you do if you were Coach Rahe and or the AD?

If I were Rahe, I’d go hire Beckner back with the promise he’d take over head coach after Rahe’s contract. I’d donate some salary or whatever it took to get him back. I think Beckner was the brains behind the good seasons...and he ran a good defense. I don’t remember what good defense even looks like.

I think Rahe will just ride out the last four years of the contract if he isn’t bought out sooner and head off into retirement. I don’t expect many changes other than some talent bailing the team in the offseason like Nero did.

Chex; I don't know where your info on coach Beckner is coming from, but it is not really accurate. I like coach Beckner and there are a few things that he is really good at, but to say that he was the brains of the program is totally inaccurate. Coach Beckner is very, very good at individual skill development. If he liked you and you would work with him, he could make you a better player. If he didn't like you, you couldn't get the time of day out of him. He worked well with Damian and one or two other players, but failed with the majority. He didn't install offensive plays or defensive systems. He did what he was good at and that was individual skill development. There is a reason he has bounced around the coaching world over the past several years and has not been a head coach anywhere. Many people on this forum want to paint him as the next great head coach. Maybe someday he will be, but that is a long ways off.

As far as players leaving the program, I do expect at least one. However, I don't see wholesale changes. I do think that at least 3 new players will be signed this spring. I do expect that there will be at least one JC guy and at least one grad transfer.

I'm hoping that there is some serious development taking place over the summer. Our freshmen need to really step up for their 2nd year. I'm hoping that they trash the offensive sets they have been trying to run and develop more variety on defense. They need to find a way to become a better rebounding team or, if they can't do that, learn a way to get more possessions by turning the opponent over more often.

This year has been painful, but it's still my school and I still love basketball. I'm always hopeful.

https://weberstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/phil-beckner/33

Here’s a link that tells more about Beckner. He was primarily responsible for defensive play calls. They had great defensive stats. I’ll wager they aren’t that good now.

We can agree to disagree, but I think what has happened since his departure speaks volumes.

I remember Beckner working the refs and yelling at the players to get back on defense or give better effort when needed. I miss that.

I sure hope Rahe puts it together and wins some more titles, but I don’t see anything building or pieces falling in place. I think the Montana game in Missoula looks like what the future may hold. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t think things improve until a new coach comes in.

Other than the seniors graduating there will be at least 3 or 4 other guys that transfer based on what I have heard. Barnes, Diakite, Galuppo and possibly Jordan or Zdor, maybe both. next year will pretty much be a brand new team again and consistency will be hard to come by. Not that these guys aren’t good players but they just don’t fit whatever system coach rahe thinks he has and their talent has been wasted.

No doubt there will be many transfers soon. It won’t be because of all the losses. It’ll be because the culture of Weber State basketball is so screwed up. No team identity. No unity. Reward selfishness. Fans can see it.

We are basically up a creek without a paddle for next year! Every possible chance to win comes down to Harding. He has to score in large bunches for us to even have a chance, and when he doesn’t play it is ugly! So if you take that in to account, next year we will average about 40 points a game, because we have no one on the team or in the pipeline who can replace Harding. It’s slim pickings! When Kozak is your top option you have a serious problem on your hands.
A good coaching staff does 2 things really well if they want to be successful.
1- Recruiting the right players for your system.
2- Developing those players to be what you need to be in order to be successful. I haven’t seen that happen in several years.
As a matter of fact, i don’t see a good offensive or defensive game plan, especially the offense. Running the weave at the top of the key with Harding in the corner waiting to come get the ball doesn’t work! Honestly Harding shooting the ball when triple teamed is actually a higher percentage play because we have no one who can make a jumper. It’s almost as if the coaching staff has a problem with finding any player over 6 foot 4 playing any position other than the 5. They have one big in the game and run 4- 6 ‘4” and under guards. We need shooting and length and we have neither! Harding is truly an incredible offensive player and has proven he can pretty much win some games by himself. but it does us no good, because we have no knock down shooters and no length! So Harding has to do it himself. They have two players on the bench with length (Morris and Zdor) and they don’t play. You have to have length if you want to compete! When we played Montana, we are down by 30 points, we are getting abused by Pritchard down in the paint and on the wing because we have no one over 6 foot 4 to match up, and even then they never put in Zdor or Morris with some length to make it a little harder on him!!! Why not try someone else, we’re down 30! Makes absolutely no sense!
Next season is going to be dreadful! We go to the Big Sky Tournament every year, but we aren’t going this year because we know what is going to happen. I can only imagine how bad next year is going to be. This is the type is situation that sets programs back. The crowds this year have been dwindling, I have 10 seats and can’t hardly give them away sometimes.Time for a change of direction or the Purple Palace is going be empty!

Good analysis...speaking of which, tonight's game has "Fan Appreciation night" (or in other words, let's get some butts in the seats so that the DEC doesn't look empty on KJZZ). Cheapen ticket prices to $7 lower bowl & $2 upper bowl. Kind of a signs of the times this program is in currently. :twocents:

We will be there as painful as it is to watch! It’s hard to fill a stadium even when you are giving the tickets away. Honestly I still go to every game, because Harding is worth the price of admission. That guy deserves a better team to play with. He is entertaining in and of himself.

during the rahe era we have always been consistently good even though we didn't ever have the senior laden teams every 3-4 yrs that can make just about any school compete to win its conf. wazzuwildcat's comments about how we can build the team back up haven't happened in the last half decade and we dont know why. in the last 6 seasons while we did win the conf title and conf tourney in 2016 we will have had 2 losing seasons and just really the 1 good team.

if you exclude non-D1 wins we have had just 1 20 win season in the last 7 seasons.

"Hall's career isn't over; he's set to choose between BYU, Utah and Utah State before the end of the year," referring to Fremont star Dallin Hall. Weber State in his own backyard is not even in consideration. Not surprising in any way, just more disappointment in the program formerly known as Weber State Basketball.

I saw Rahe at a Fermont game watching Hall. I believe Rahe has been recruiting him heavily. But, my thoughts were the same as yours. Why in the hell would he choose Weber over any of the other in-state schools? Why would he choose to play for Rahe over Pope or Smith, two young energetic player's coaches. And why would he choose Big Sky over PAC-12, even if that PAC-12 program's coach is a total clown. Not going to happen Rahe, quit wasting your time.

Seriously, how can there be any type of hope for next season? The last two games have killed the little momentum we had going. I think this is worse than Cravens last season.

Next year? Going to be worse than this year! Time to clean house! Assistants and everyone currently involved in the program. The message needs to be delivered to Rahe...... it’s either win the tourney or else! I know that a snowballs chance in hell, but the program needs a complete reboot. Weber State basketball isn’t worth the price of admission. We need to schedule 7-10 Sisters of Mercy to have a chance at .500 next season!

It has been one of the worst seasons in WSU basketball history. I have no idea who will or won't be back next year. There were, obviously, problems on multiple levels. Next year, who knows?

Here is my observation:

-The offense was bad all year. It got a bit better in February, but was still bad.

-Our defense was too predictable and easy to prep for. No variation at all, or at least it was negligible.

-We were a poor rebounding team and we didn't turn other teams over much. We almost always had less possessions than the other team.

To turn this thing around for next year, all of those things need to be addressed. Can this thing be turned around? Sure it can, but working harder isn't the answer to everything. They will need to work smarter.

One thing that is encouraging to me is that our big men seemed to make steady progress and that young bunch will just get better.

i remember smokin joe's finale really well back in 2005-06. it was my senior yr. i even attended his final game which was @ isu. why did i go? no clue.

we finished the season 10-17. I believe in big sky we went 4-10. that season was historic, first ever home loss to sac state and psu. the hornets took home the game ball.

that team really had no talent and had loads of jc transfers. joe's 03 and 04 teams had a combined 12 seniors so 05 and 06 really weren't that great with the exception of one of our best centers in school history in lance allred who made an nba roster in 2008 and also appeared as "Alan" in a 2019 Hallmark channel christmas film titled Matchmaker Christmas. :-D He was mocked for his 6-11 height by the matchmaker when she remembered he was a giant.

when rahe was hired in march of 06 he only retained 3 from the 05-06 team (patten, jp silveria, dan henry). the 06 team's best player was...nobody, so ill pick my favorite as either uncle fester or danko. small forward 3-pt launching david patten was an average player at best. we were all amazed when rahe came in and moved patten into the paint and he won the big sky mvp.

it wasn't until this yr that i kept being reminded of my sr yr. that yr i felt bad for the graduating sr's. even still i didnt think wsu would fire joe. he was in the big sky champ game twice in his final 4 yrs. but those were different times, joe didnt even earn a 6 figure base salary, wsu could afford to remove him. they also never gave long term contracts. one thing that joe did that rahe has never done which you cant come back from in the land of the purple people is losing back-to-back seasons. joe, larry "jd" farmer and denny huston all committed this wildcat misdemeanor.

Seriously, how can there be any type of hope for next season? The last two games have killed the little momentum we had going. I think this is worse than Cravens last season.

i remember smokin joe's finale really well back in 2005-06. it was my senior yr. i even attended his final game which was @ isu. why did i go? no clue.

Interesting point...with the outlook for next season that a lot of us fans have, it could very well be Randy Rahe's turn coming up. We all have made inputs on the program's problems, especially these past 3 or 4 seasons, each ending with a thud-like end. Play "smarter"...make wise, flexible in-game adjustments, utilize player strengths...bigger rotations, etc. etc. Doesn't that all begin with, depend on, = COACHING? Quite frankly few of us think that Coach Rahe & staff--even the players-- aren't working hard; we know they want to win. The problem is confidence in success is waning, excitement evaporating, attendance definitely down & the PR image of the WSU basketball program (men & women) has declined along with the W/L record.

Short of a miracle run in the upcoming BSC tourney, the beat goes on & some of us fans have indeed grown negative. But we realize it's 3 more (?) seasons of hearing coach speak that there's "fire & desire to get it fixed", "it's been a crazy year.." "this will get turned around", "wait 'till next yr", "recruiting is riding high-from the Lillard effect", etc. That isn't hopeful any more. :ohno: :twocents:

You hit it on the head! How much longer do we have to listen to the rhetoric! They aren’t young anymore, they aren’t going to be better when conference starts, and we aren’t going to be better next year. What else is there to say? Here’s the truth!

We recruit players based on a flawed system!
We don’t recruit or have any in state kids to help the fan base!
We don’t recruit any wings over 6’3”! We have one who is a senior walk on who didn’t play until the fans started chanting his name!
We don’t develop the players! ie. Cody John same dude that came here 5 years ago.
These are the facts! I hate to say it, but it comes down to coaching! If you want to be a coach in division 1 basketball then you better win or show improvement. If you don’t there is the door. That’s how it works.
If you want a job where you can be consistently wrong, then go into meteorology.
One more truth and I will move on!
If we played a decent out of conference schedule, we would have more attendance. But when we play West Coast Baptist, Bethesda, Westcliff, and whatever Church Ball team you can find to play us, no one wants to watch that garbage. We would only have 7 wins this season without the cupcakes!

Losing to a bad Idaho State team on Senior night? OUCH!!!! Ok Ok, we stink and its very clear we have major issues across the board. Looking at next year we have to replace our top 2 scores on a team that was not that great at scoring to begin with. Ughh. Sooooooooooooooooo... I want to be positive. Rahe needs to make some big time changes this off season. I like the idea of cleaning house with the assistant coaches. I would not be surprised if all of them are gone. Even Duft. We need new blood and energy. I have accepted we will really struggle to win games next year. I mean look at the returning roster and you can see why. I'm ok with that. I'm at the point where I want to see improvement, players playing hard, sharing the ball, playing together, getting better, etc. We have been in a 4 year downward spiral. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over with same results. Its been 4 years of the same old. Rahe needs to really shake things up. I bet we have 2-4 more current players transfer at least. There is just not much talent on the team. We are not going to be good next year and that's ok. We are going to be in a major rebuild mode next year. I just want to see some life in the program, improvement, excitement. Even if we suck balls next year, which we probably will I just hope its not the same as the last 4 years. I'm actually kind of excited to see the changes. We are scheduled to play Fresno State, Utah State and UVU at home so that's something to look forward too. I hope I don't sound like I'm talking out of my ass. I just hope we make some good changes and see some new life and can see the program on the rise. Another year of this shit show and I might have to move to Missoula and become a Grizzly fan. :(
