North Texas

In looking at our next opponent (best to look forward), North Texas is another FBS team (plays in C-USA), but they have not won a game yet, and have been blown out of almost every game. Southern Miss (Brett Farve U) beat them yesterday, 49-14. I've caught them on TV and they don't look to be as good as Wazzu, or even as good as some Big Sky teams. This game is certainly winnable with our defense, but we will need to score some points. The last time an FCS team beat two FBS teams in the same season was North Dakota State in 2007, beating both Central Michigan and Minnesota, but I think we have a good opportunity here to do just that. We got the more difficult of the two out of the way already.

I registered myself on the North Texas forum (even though I a PSU alum, I', also a proud Texan)and I'm sensing some real trepidations on their part. Most of what they are saying sounds a lot like what we were saying last year.

Here is the link to their thread on us: http://www.gomeangreen.com/forums/topic/107147-portland-st/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Since I am also fluent in "Texican" I'll just mosey in and say howdy to them and let we know we ain't taking them lightly.

Just read this post on the North Texas Forum. An anonymous post by a North Texas player alluding to dissent on the team, much like the Viks last season.

For the older generation that doesn't know there is a newly designed, very popular, social media app specifically for college students called Yik Yak. The app requires no username or password, and is completely anonymous. You are allowed to post once you're on a campus and you can say whatever you want and then people "up vote" or "down vote" the post. Recently UNT's entire feed has been covered with smack talk about our football team. Going from the Mean Green pride before the SMU game to this is a very unfortunate turn of events. Anyways, today some self-proclaimed UNT football player had this to say about our team. Very interesting

I am worried about this game; quite worried. I am worried about the rest of the season; quite worried. I started to get worried after the WOU game. Just the week before D2 Central Washington beat WOU 40-19. The same day we played WOU, Idaho State went down to play UNLV and got beat 80-8. Both of our opponents following the WSU game were not good football teams. We beat the both, but we beat teams that were not very good. Yes, but we beat a PAC 12 team in our very first game this year! So, maybe we got lucky, very lucky. This week we had N. Dakota. They beat us badly. So we are off to play a not so good FBS team. Then we get to play the likes of Montana, Cal Poly, Montana State, and Eastern Washington with the same team that played N. Dakota. As I mentioned before, I am quite worried.

@Alan. Take heart. You raise some good points on the quality of teams we have faced. And thank goodness for driving rain when we played the Cougs...However, I believe we are one position group away from being really good. Fix the Oline problems and we are definitely a top 25 team.

A great defense (but let's figure out how to keep a linebacker in the middle to catch those TE and RB coming across), really good special teams, really good talent and leadership by Alex at QB, Better offensive play calling, a lot of good athlete''s, and better overall team spirit and attitude. If we can figure out how to give Alex some time in the pocket and figure out how to get enough push on the line to gain 1 yard when the game is on the line...we are going to have a really special year...

The last few years we had a lot of things to fix. Now it really looks like it comes down to one area. We can do this...

Our O-line coach had all Spring camp, all Fall camp, three ballgames, and a bye to get the job done. He didn't get it done, not even close. Why would anyone think he is going to get it done any time this season (or next for that matter)? I sure hope we are practicing a lot of screens, draws, and extremely long field goals.

For the last few days I've been trolling the North Texas Forum at http://www.gomeangreen.com/, expecting to read smack about the game. Actually the opposite is true.

From what I'm reading there, for what it might be worth, the majority of the posters express little faith in the starting QB, Andrew McNulty ((4 games)passing 60-126-- 699 yds 3 TD 4 INT 10 sacks-- rush 19- -25 yds) and absolutely none in his back-up Demarcus Smith ((2 games) 3-12-- 70 yds 1 INT-- rush 7- 12 yds) who their coach Dan McCarney basically threw under the bus in his last press conference for not being consistent). He did express admiration for our win at Wazzu, because as he put it, we flat-out outplayed them and our last loss was by only 2 points (whereas all their losses have been complete blowouts)

Nor are they impressed with the performance of the rest of the team either either, the backfield is always getting beat to the ball, the D-line can't stop the rush and the offensive line being blown off the ball

I'm not saying the game is 100% in the bag,but when you see threads titled "If we lose to Portland State," "Thermopylae. Bastogne, The Alamo," "UNT Football (why can't we win?)" and multiple threads calling for the firing of both their athletic director, Rick Villarreal and the head coach, I'm not seeing a whole lot of confidence in either the team or their athletic departments.

So despite what others are saying, I'm hopeful of another FBS upset in the books.

By far, the Wazzu game was the more difficult of the two, but we were supposed to beat North Dakota at home last week. The increase in scholarships between FCS and FBS, even a weak FBS, is still tough to overcome and flying halfway across the country for a quick game could be tough as well. At least the game is at a reasonable time for us (not like playing at Delaware at 9am).

Looks like Sibley is questionable this week:

By the way the Tribune has been running basically daily articles on the Viks, with quotes from the coaching staff, etc. Something we haven't seen from the newspapers around here for awhile.

Links from the Denton Record Chroncle on the game. Pretty good, although I doubt PSU fans would think of Ken Goe as an expert on PSU football and PSU athletics, but be that as it may.

I just hope there are no cheap shots. Sometimes, when a team brings in what is supposed to be an easy Homecoming win, if that game is anything but easy, the home team starts a "win at any costs" mentality. And with MSU, CP and Montana coming up, we can't afford to lose anyone to cheap shots. As in Star Wars-Epsode 4 (the first one for us old timers) when C3PO said to R2D2, "Let the Wookie win". I just want them to return healthy and if that means rolling over and letting North Texas win, so be it. We have bigger games than this coming up.

We need to continue to move the ball. They need to run plenty of passing plays, show the rest of the Big Sky that they will have to defend the whole field.

ISU beat UND today.

PSU needs to make a statement!
