Northern Arizona @ Portland State Game Thread

28-21 Viks at half

Update: UM beats EWU 24-23, BUT.....UM gave up over 500 passing yards...... /users/31/07/37/smiles/269784.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/595146.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/949928.gif

Almost always? This is one of the first rules in the coaching book! I am furious. He blew the game. They had the momentum, and this is the wrong decision. This isn't one of those goat-genius decisions. That only applies in road games. The goal line offense has been bad. Every fan there was shocked with the decision, and for good reason.

There were mistakes made by the coaches, some mistakes made by the players. The bad punt snap that resulted in an NAU touchdown, the blocked extra point, and some stupid late hits. Now while the go for two on the final play could have gone either way. JG would be hailed for making a ballsy call if it would have worked or as an idiot if it did not. I think that he had faith that the team could have done it, so either way it was a hard fought game which except for a few bad breaks we could have won. I don't think I am far off the mark in calling it a transation year from the Walsh philosophy to the JG one and I for one can live with that.

Thank you,we did, Ying had a good time and I was impressed by the level of play on both sides of the ball by both teams.

I hate to say it, but we didn't deserve to win this game.

Penalties, dropped passes, and bad coaching decisions sealed the deal on this one.

Special teams play is a direct result of coaching, and our errors on special teams cost us the game. We had some great kick returns all game long, but the bad snap showed poor coaching. You need to have your punter know that he needs to just get on the ball. Not pick it up, try to run, then try to kick it on the ground. Just get on the ball and let the defense try to salvage something.

White was really off today. Funny, I'm saying that a guy who just threw for 442 yards was off. :-\ Very bad passes on those interceptions, and a lot of the big yardage plays were poorly thrown balls that the receivers outplayed the defenders on.

NAU made the adjustments at the half to win this game. Notice how our running game was totally missing in the 2nd half.

Wow...those PSU games will give me a heart attack one day...
Kudos to PSU, and even though it didn't work out, I loved the 2 point attempt, and many NAU fans arround us congratulated us. The Vikings truly proved balls in this game. The two embarrasing mistakes in the game clearly proved that we are not ready yet to talk about WAC, but God, some of the passes looked SO GOOD.

I had fun....Idaho and Weber, brace yourselves....this is Portland State.

White and Kirkland...you're awesome!

I'm sorry. I completely disagree, I know I said this already, but that is the wrong decision. It's like that Cowboys head coach being told he made a bad decision and him not acknowledging it. You can't base your five year future on one play.

I'll still be a fan, and I know the others on this board will be too, but I think the newfound excitement around the program is going to dwindle quickly.

I agree that some didn't deserve to win this game, but I don't think NAU did either if that's the case. I praise the guys who put their hearts on the line today only to have them stepped on.

Still a lot of season to be played. ALL big sky schools look very vulnerable. Each one has had their stumbles already. We just need to play a complete game like we did against EWU.

I think this season is salvageable if we beat Montana.

True, but we are not the Cowboys; we are not an established team (mediawise). Think about people's reactions if the thing had succeeded and we had won the game by one point. I see Glanville as 50% coach and 50% marketing guy/attention whore - attention being the one thing the Vikings need more than wins. From this perspective, it was a very consequent and brave thing to do for the Vikings, and they certainly proved balls today.

That's obviously no excuse for some horrible mistakes in the game - without all that nervousness, it would have been a nice clear victory.

I think it's a work in progress with flashes of brilliance. Tremayne going up and pulling down some big yardage pass plays. So close even after the turnovers and the ? run defense. What happened there?

Two weeks off to do what has to be done to be ready for the next five games including the two Montana teams.
Go Viks
