Heading to the Stott in about 30 min., Go Viks!!!!!!!!

Game Day: Northern Arizona at Portland State

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2010/01/game_day_northern_arizona_at_p.html

When: 1 p.m. today

Where: Stott Center (1,500), Portland

Records: Northern Arizona (8-9, 2-4 Big Sky Conference); Portland State (8-9, 3-2)

On the air: TV on CSN (Comcast 37); radio on KPDQ (800)

Probable starters: Northern Arizona -- F Nick Larsen (7.9 ppg), C Josh Lepley (5.4 ppg), G Cameron Jones (17.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg), G Gabe Rogers *8.3 ppg), G Julian Olubuyi (2.5 ppg, 4.1 apg); Portland State -- F Phil Nelson (12.5 ppg), F Paul Guede (4.5 ppg), C Jamie Jones (12.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg), G Melvin Jones (13.2 ppg), Dominic Waters (18.5 ppg, 4.8 apg).

Briefly: Through 17 games, the Vikings are averaging 78.0 points a game and shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from three-point range to lead the conference in all three categories. ... Jamie Jones had 11 points and 13 rebounds in Friday's 85-69 victory over Northern Colorado for his fourth double-double of the season and third in four games. ... In his last six games, NAU's Cameron Jones averaged 21.3 points and shot 54.9 percent (50 of 91) from the field, leading the Lumberjacks to a 4-2 record. ... The Vikings have a 19-13 lead in the all-time series with NAU and have won six consecutive games against the Lumberjacks, including last season's 92-91 victory in four overtimes in Flagstaff, Ariz. ... Today's game also is a rematch of the 2008 Big Sky tournament championship final, which the Vikings won 67-51 at the Rose Garden to earn the first of two consecutive berths into the NCAA Tournament. There are three holdovers -- PSU's Julius Thomas and NAU's Cameron Jones and Nick Larson -- from that conference tournament expected to see significant action in today's game.

Lumberjacks fan here:

Honestly don't know who this Lumberjacks team is on the court in Portland. This crazy shooting percentage won't continue for the whole game and it will be a close game in the end. NAU's free throw percentage is pretty atrocious and they have a tendency to turn it over often.

The Vikings aren't out of this yet.

Why in the hell would we play Cotton-eyed Joe in our gym?

Do you think they play the PSU fight song in Missoula sometimes?

This is the second time I have heard the PSU organization play this fucking song.
Last time was at the Montana football game the year before last.

Will someone explain this to me?

Playing that song is pretty ridiculous. I suppose there are plenty of yuppie-ish rednecks in Portland who like the song to warrant playing it.

This one was really frustrating to watch. NAU shot 72%, but the impressive par was the second half. PSU actually started playing defense and the numbers went up. Ugh! The rebounding was pathetic, but they could have come back and won if they had made as many shots as NAU down the stretch.

Tough day for Coach Geving. He was a little over the line, but not much more so than the NAU coach who only drew a warning for his antics.

I hate losing at home.

NAU's shooting was unreal. I hope the NAU folks enjoy it, because nobody can shoot like that all of the time. Regardless of the shooting, we did ourselves in with our first have play on the glass. Frustrating considering Geving's comments prior to the game on Friday and the way we came out. I again wonder about Tree. First have woes on the glass, and it would seem that putting him in with a mission of winning the battle of the boards would make sense. Maybe he's in the dog house. Who knows.

Both NAU and PSU fans were robbed by BSC officials once again. They were terrible. Toss Geving, yet Adras repeatedly runs 7' out onto the court and gets only a warning. Adras. He never fails to remind me of what a clown he is.

One good thing to take away from this game is that we didn't quit. The team was down 20 with 12 to go, and both the team and the fans didn't give up. I thought for a while that we had it in us for the comeback. We'd get close, but then something wouldn't go right. Just seemed like the ball wasn't bouncing our way today.

Oh, and someone should check on Victor E Viking. He lost like seven inches of height this weekend. ;-)

This game was frustrating, especially considering that it was pretty even except for a stretch at the end of the first half and start of the second half.

I do question PSU's strategy at the end when they were going for the quick layups instead of shooting threes. At some point, you've got to gamble and shoot from distance.

Yup, that was NAU's game of the year up to this point. They haven't and won't shoot that way again this season....but I'll take it for at least one game. The Lumberjacks lost the offensive rebound and turnover battle. That was it. And the Vikings still nearly played their way back into the game at the end. Sad that I won't be able to make the drive up to Flagstaff mid-week in February for the PSU game.

There's a long way to go in the Big Sky Conference this season. Northern Colorado and Weber State have proven to be fallible after starting out smoking hot. ISU seems to be a better team than their record shows. UM and MSU are both competitive but seem a bit inconsistent. Eastern Washington and Sacramento State are playing some tough/close games this year. The talent is evident on PSU's roster. With the travel required for conference play and mostly back-to-back games, there don't seem to be many guarantees this season.

Adras's coaching style has always been pretty firey. He rides officials but maybe he does it by knowing what he can get away with when dealing with the same conference officials year in and out? Maybe conference officials will take it from veteran coaches but not first year coaches? Don't know as the camera work didn't zoom in on either coach during the game. Weber State's fans ride Coach Adras and from what I hear, lovingly (?) refer to him as Baldy.

Martymoose......when I think of a "clown" of a coach...names like Bob Huggins and Bob Knight pop into my head. Not Adras or anyone else in the Big Sky. I've never had the feeling that Adras put himself on a pedestal for attention above the team or went out of his way to show up a Big Sky Conference referee. My two cents....nothing more.

Clown probably wasn't the best choice. He really gets animated and seems to really get out on the court and ride the officials on everything. I was really, really surprised that he didn't pick up a technical foul yesterday. I think you're probably onto something bout the BSC officials and veteran coaches. I've seen far less result in two shots from the charity stripe for the other team. I've also noticed that he really seems to ride his kids pretty hard on the bench. I'm not a real big fan of that practice.

On the flip side, he seems to be a pretty good coach. Always seems to get a little more out of the talent that he has...

Definitely emotional about what he does with the stomping on the court and "about to have a stroke - vein on his forehead redy to pop".

Adras rides his players and has been well known for running some brutal practices as well. There's been player turnover over his years in Flagstaff including one of the more vaunted mens basketball recruits - Shayar Lee - who left last year after his freshman year. Adras stated in an interview this year that he decided to ease up a bit on practices in hopes that it keeps the players fresh as the season goes on.

Considering the less than premium facilities, severe cuts for athletic funding at the state level and lack of support from the city of Flagstaff in general (I'll give some props to the students as they've stepped up a bit the last few years), I have to give Adras and his coaching staff credit for doing well with what they have.

I'll admit that PSU is doing better than I though they would with the graduation of that nightmare of a point guard - Dominguez - and Coach Bone moving on to WSU. I expected PSU to have a down year but the talent level is good and they look like they'll be in the running for the league the rest of the way.

Good luck the rest of the season to PSU.

Cheers.
