Northern Colorado

So after all the hoopla of the Montana win, we have winless Northern Colorado coming in to town. The Bears are without a win, but have played some good teams close (McNeese State, Sacramento State). I would say that, based on our win over Montana and that we are at home (the Timbers being so gracious to let us actually play in our house this weekend), we are going to be favored going in to the game. And, if we do get the win, we are 2-2 in conference play going in to the bye week. How crazy is that after all that this team has gone through in just this season?

I would also venture to say the Montana game was the toughest game we will play this year. I know we play EWU, but we have them at home and we have given the Eagles some tough contests even with bad Vikings teams. Also, to look at it from a different perspective, opposing teams just don't win in Missoula. It is as simple as that. And for us to win there shows we can play with anyone (and beat anyone) in the conference.

I have been critical of Barnum in the past, but yesterday he had his team ready. I was wrong the other day when I said this team wasn't competitive. They showed yesterday that they can be competitive, and I hope the win in Montana brings them some new found confidence. Sure there is still room for improvement, but there were enough bright spots (besides the obvious ones) that make me hopeful again. I have been reading the Griz page, and our criticisms of Barney seem quaint compared to that group. Here's hoping this team has turned a corner, If they can find a way to win enough games to get to .500 for the year, that will be a major success after the last 700 days.

A nice cup of coffee and some eGriz made for a nice little rainy northwest Sunday morning.

:-)

Lost in the shuffle of the huge upset was that our best player was out. Anyone know about Taumoepeau’s status for this week’s game?

I haven't heard anything. From listening to pregame last weekend, it sounded like it was precautionary, but then I heard he didn't even make the trip. This is only a guess, but I think they hold him out this weekend and give him two extra weeks to heal. We're going to need him in the stretch run (can you imagine us talking about "stretch run").

This game does concern me, only because NoCo has a speedy receiver (Wesley) who's had some impressive games already. I hope the single coverage can contain him.

Do the Vikings who played Montana State show up in Providence Park, or will it be the Vikings who played Montana?

If we lose this game I don’t think there will be much of a stretch run. Per 5dimes the line on the game is even. Looking at the rest of the schedule we will probably be underdogs in every game after this.

FWIW Taumoepeau is listed first on the depth chart in the release for this week’s game.

Last week, Massey gave us an 8% chance of winning. I guess if its even, I have to like those odds better. :D

I do agree that we're going to be underdogs the rest of the season.

Am I understanding Colter's picks correctly? He has PSU with a power ranking of 8th and Northern at 13th, but still picks winless Northern Colorado to come up to Portland State and win, after PSU had a big win on the road the week before? I would say this game is a toss up at worse. I would have to give PSU a slight edge.

Just when I was beginning to like the guy... :ohno:

It's going to come down to if our single coverage can contain Alex Wesley for NoCo. For the record, I have us winning 28-26.

Massey has us 35-34.

Another week, another bear, and hopefully another win.

They're giving up 44 per game in conference play and ever since the 4th quarter of the MSU game the 4-2-5 flex seems to be doing pretty well.

I'll go with PSU by 16.

The fact that we are even discussing a win is a plus......I'm not going to hold it against Colter, he has to pick em like he sees em.....I was just a little surprised.

You can't really argue that our home field edge is not all that great. Beavs are off this weekend. Maybe we can get some orange in the Park (and be glad we are not playing Idaho State :D )
