Notable Transfers in the Conference (In and Out)

I'm always checking out the Verbal Commits transfer lists to see who is coming and going in the conference. So far I have noticed there has not been a lot of movement in the Big Sky. Here are some moves that I have noticed so far. Also looking at who has notable JC transfers, D1 or D2 guys coming in.

Notable transfers out of program.

Brandon Boyd Idaho State. Would have been a SR and averaged a little over 14 PPG. He his a grad transfer. Very solid player. He kicked our ass in the game up in Pocatello. Will hurt Idaho State for sure especially with a new coach.

Cameron Tyson Idaho. Was probably their top 3 point shooter. Was a true Freshman and averaged a little over 13 PPG. He is from Washington. Hope he transfers to WAZZU. :) This will hurt Idaho. He looked like he would become one of the top players by the time he was a JR.

Luka Vulicik Eastern Washington. Was a Sophomore and averaged about 6 PPG. The game I saw him, he looked solid. Not a top player by any means though.

Other than these 3 guys the other transfers in the conference don't look that significant unless I'm missing something.

The only JC guy coming in any program that I can tell so far is the former 4 star guy to Weber State. I'm skeptical on him. Has really bounced around and is coming off a bad knee injury. I hope he is awesome, because we really need to upgrade the post positions, but will wait and see.

Idaho has a big 7 foot guy (Jack Wilson) transferring in from Oregon State that was a big recruit for the Beavers. I think he is eligible next year. That could help the Vandals. I see them struggling next year again.

Montana has a big guy transferring in from Towson and a D2 wing from Washington that will both be eligible by conference play. The Towson guy doesn't have much to base anything on, but the D2 guy was one of the top players in D2. Plus Montana is great in bringing in transfers. I hate to admit, but the Grizz will be very good again next year. Pisses me off. Good for them though.

Southern Utah has John Knight III coming in from Utah State. I saw him play and he was very solid. I think he will be eligible by conference. He transferred to SUU at the first of the season. I think SUU will be a top 4 team in the big sky next year. Lots of experience coming back.

Did I miss anything? Will update as more guys transfer in and out...

Only lose one player that contributed in Better. Also add a 7 foot D1 transfer that had to sit out this past season. Will probably be four straight losses to the T-Birds. :ohno:

Randy Rahe will still be coaching next year.

Probably a 20 point loss to UVU as well, but we will learn from it.

 You are spot on. Winning instate games doesn’t matter. They are after all preseason games—what people other than Rahe call non-conference games. Besides, it won’t matter when the Wildcats drop 100 on Bethesda. That will make it all better!

Couple things:
1. Brandon Boyd isn’t a for sure transfer yet. He wants to see how the coaching situation at ISU goes before deciding if he is transferring or not
2. Montana got a SJSU transfer in a 6’10” big man Micheal Steadman

Add Michael Nuga from Portland State. He averaged a little over 10 PPG. Good solid player. Would have been a SR next year. PSU still has Woods, but other than him nothing really returning on the guard line. This transfer surprises me. Nuga is a good player.

Idaho State's Gary Chivichyan, who shot 41 percent from 3, is also in the portal. He, like Boyd, is waiting to see who ISU hires as coach before making a final transfer decision. Idaho State is reportedly down to three finalists who will be interviewed on campus this week. (Haven't heard who the finalists are.)

PS--Gus Argenal, assistant at Nevada, is reportedly interviewing today.

Add Doc Nelson from Weber State. Was hurt most of the year. I liked Doc, but he can't shoot. Above average defensive player and passer, but if you can't make a shot, that's a problem. I hope he finds a good D2 program in Texas. He played hard and seemed like a good teammate. Wish him the best

Not from conference, but Jake Toolson has entered the portal as a grad transfer from UVU. Wonder if he goes back to BYU?

Bengal visitor, there are 5 Nevada players who have entered the portal in the past 24 hours. If ISU hires the Nevada assistant, what are the chances they follow him?

Nevada had like 7 Seniors and and now 5 transfers. They might only have 2 returning players next season plus a new coach. That is crazy to me. They could go from 1st to last in the Mountain West next season. San Jose State is pretty terrible though. We should try and schedule Nevada next season.

My money is on Toolson going to USU. But, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities that he goes back to the Y. I just know he isn't coming to Ogden. But, it would be cool if he did. I'd take him. We do have an open scholarship.

I think that there will be a lot more transfer activity going on in the BSC and around the country. It is my opinion that we will bring in a transfer sometime this spring or summer. It's almost a sure thing that ISU will have some more movement in that regard. As I understand it, teams have until July 1st to renew current player's grants. There have been over 600 transfers nationwide, so far, and there will probably be 200 to 300 more before it's over. This year is on pace to out do last year's total by quite a bit.

Given that all three of ISU’s commitments asked for releases when Evans was not renewed, I’d certainly guess the Nevada players would be in play for Argenal if he winds up at ISU.

PS—Jazz Johnson, their best returning player, has announced he will stay at Nevada v

UI just picked up a solid JC forward. They will probably be one of the most improved teams next year. They were not good this past year, but they were quite young.

I would like to see Weber go after a big graduate transfer. Jayce Johnson from Utah is out there. Would love to bring him in for a year. Doubt that would fly since we play the Utes next year, but we could use a 7 footer. Jayce is a good player too. Would be fun to see him stick it to the MUTES next season and make it 2 in a row against Larry K.

He would be a great addition. We need another traditional center who can play with his back towards the basket and actually rebound. If he is a graduate transfer then LK and the mutes can't do anything to block him. However, realistically, what are the chances? Besides, from what I remember, Randy isn't really down with guys who only have a year to play.

Not sure about this. We have tons of players who are one and done. Not sure what the differences are between a one year eligible grad transfer and a freshman who leaves the team after year one. At this rate of turnover, why not use a guy like a grad transfer help immediately? Can someone calculate since Rahe has been here, the odds of a players who signs as a FR to actually play all four years here?

Just from this years team it is not a great optic. 12 former Wildcats on the list.

2019 - Braxton and Chapman
Cannon and Jefferson left

2020 - Harding and John
Williams, Dallas, and Stavrev left

2021 - Kozak
Nelson, Ary-Turner, Butler, Darling and Patten left

2022 - Barnes, Nero, Fuller, Kupsas and Zdor
Johnson and Vialen left

Williams was medical. Stavrev was medical. Both were given advice not to play. They could have stayed on a medical exemption grant to get their degrees, but chose to see if they could play somewhere that would allow them to play. Dallas was in the program for 4 years and graduated.

Butler and Patten were unrecruited walk ons. Nelson was a medical issue as well, nobody forced him out. He lost a step with his knee issues and got beat out for PT by another player. It happens.

Vailen left with medical issues. He was losing weight and the doctors couldn't figure out how to help him. He went home as kind of an emergency thing.

The only one on your list that is a head scratcher is Johnson. I think that Pope was messing with him during the summer after his mission. It will be interesting to see what happens with him now. I really hope he does well. :coffee:
