Payton Award

Who will win the Payton Award?

  • Gage Gubrud (EWU)

    Votes: 10 26.3%
  • Cooper Kupp (EWU)

    Votes: 25 65.8%
  • Jeremiah Brisco (SHSU)

    Votes: 3 7.9%

  • Total voters
    38
  • Poll closed .
I think Kupp SHOULD win it. Everyone in the world tried to stop him, and yet he still had the highest yds/gm average, and did so many other things. Gubrud and Briscoe both are incredible talents, but benefit a lot from their particular schools offensive style of play. There are others, IMO, that have similar skill sets that would produce similar numbers in our and the Bearkat offense. Both Gubrud and Briscoe were somewhat unknown commodities (much more so for Gubrud), so gameplanning against them should've been more challenging then gameplanning for Kupp. Briscoe also had the advantage of padding numbers against very weak competition.

Between the three, I think it should be 1 - Kupp, 2 - Gubrud, 3 - Briscoe. But since the Stats voters showed a pretty distinct disconnect between the SOS factor by ranking SHSU #1 in the country, I think they will just look at the regular season stats, and award it to Briscoe for total yards. I think the voting will turn out to be 1 - Briscoe, 2 - Kupp, 3 - Gubrud.

Unfortunately, I think you are correct. The Payton is mostly a Stats award and they will ignore the fact that Briscoe put up those numbers against horrible competition.

It would be a crying shame if Briscoe won over either guy from EWU. Interesting though that Gage quietly had such an amazing year, and it was mostly overshadowed even by us EWU fans. Coop breaking so many records took most of our attention, and rightfully so. Gage will have two more years for the spotlight!

What a great pleasure it is to have so many stud players come through Cheney in recent memory.

You could be right, but I think it would have been *VERY* difficult for the voters to dismiss the fact that he finished breaking every college football receiving record in 2016. He's now the record holder for receptions, reception yardage, receiving TD's, and on and on. He also ran the ball this year and threw TD's. I think that probably counts for something.

I think Coop repeats.

I'll say this, I thought Gubrud was the best FCS QB in the playoffs. He had some hot and cold games early in the year (by Eastern standards, which are pretty damn high for a QB), but he was brilliant over the last three weeks.

Montana thought Gustafson was a legit NFL prospect, and Gubrud was substantially better.

I think if there is anything that could potentially break through and resonate with the voters, it's Kupp's career achievements, and the fact that some of those marks came through this season. That being said, I think the fact their are two EWU players in the top three could create a bit of a cannibalization of some of the votes either Kupp or Gubrud could've had. I really think Kupp should win it, and Gubrud should be above Briscoe, as his accomplishments were against MUCH tougher competition. But, I just don't think some of the voters will look at it deeply enough. I truly hope I'm wrong. After that catch at the YSU game, I've become a bit of a pessimist...

Briscoe and Gubrud's performance is based on this season which is what the award if for. Kupps performance is based on his "body of work".
I hope the voters took that into consideration when they voted.

clawman,
I think it will be Coop, Gurud, and the other one. Coop is a STUD, and he will always be in our minds. Now can't wait to see him in the NFL. Good luck Coop, you will be greatly missed. Hope to see you and family at Football Banquet, on January 21st 17, location unknown so far. Either Northern Quest, or Red Lion in Spokane. Vic Wallace

I think it was Kupp's to lose when the season started and I haven't seen a compelling reason for why he won't be awarded it again this year. The fact that he is a Senior as well as his career accomplishments will push him over the other two. All three are probably deserving.

Kupp wins ADA (Athletic Director Association) Offensive player of the year award.

Payton Award coming tomorrow night.

In the article about the ADA Award on goeags.com it mentioned that Cooper won't be present in Frisco for the presentation of the Payton Award. Probably a pretty good indication that he's not going to repeat.

If I remember right he wasn't there for the Rice Award and his dad picked it up for him. I don't think that has anything to do with getting it. It would kind of suck though for the group to not have the recipient of your biggest award not be there though. There might be a quick run to the trophy store tomorrow :-)

yeah, the AD and coaches most likely already know who won. On the most recent AD podcast Chaves basically eluded to us finishing second and third without outright saying it.
