Players leaving....?

Players leaving a program in the off season is common everywhere. Some can't hack it, some want to play elsewhere for whatever reason, some are home sick, and others just weren't meant for college in general. I looked back at our 2013 roster and counted approximately 20 players (not including the seniors) that were not on the 2014 roster. Mostly young guys are the ones that left the program. Look around, now-a-days college football teams are more of a revolving door of players. Bottom line, you can only build the program with the players who are committed to the program. Aside from that, no use crying over spilled milk.

You hit a home run right there. I agree especially with the crying over spilled milk part. There's nothing we can do about it. Let's support the players who stick it out.

I don't think that many kids leaving is because of what mccandyman said.. I think a lot of it has to do with support of the program which is horrible right now, obviously Collins and staff, and furthermore I believe a lot of it has to come with winning and losing and fans at Game's and so on. Mccandymamy had some great pointso but the amount of players that has left this off season seems to be a little unusual

Old thread but, came across a post that was retweeted a few times on twitter
Former UNC Tight End Backes is headed to Wyoming according to this tweet from @benmitchum "Wyoming has landed a transfer in 6'3", 230-pound TE Christian Backes (@Backes07) out of Aurora (CO) Grandview via Northern Colorado! #gowyo"

Well, good for him. If he can make it and get some playing time in Laramie, all the power to the kid. Best of luck, Christian.

He might but these guys that transfer never seem to do anything. The last one I can remember was that Hoffschneider kid that went to Wyoming and that was like 12 years ago.

We had a LB transfer to CU a few years ago. He ended up getting kicked off the team for some off field incident.

And Joe Silipo, who transferred to CU as well. I think he made it on to the field as a long snapper, but that's about it.

I guess it probably depends on what the definition of doing something is. I believe several guys have gone on to pretty good success at CSU Pueblo and other D2 schools. But maybe you are referring to guys that move up to FBS or stay with other schools at the FCS level. Do they have to turn into stars at that level to have been considered to do something or is it sufficient to be solid contributors for the team?

I am hearing that Ryan Wolpin is going to at the very least be a solid contributor on special teams for Boise State after transferring a year ago and sitting out last season. He was named Scout Team Special Teams MVP last year and supposedly has a pretty bright future at Boise. I would guess that he would consider that to be doing something.

Doing something means... go to a FCS school and get on the field and contributing legitimately, not scout team, benchwarmer, etc... or maybe lasting more than a season before washing out... that's doing something.

I don't fault these guys for trying I'm just saying these guys that have gone on to bigger and better have mostly all disappeared.

That kid that went to CU started here as a true freshman, went to CU and road the bench for a year and got kicked off the team for an off the field incident and ended up at an NAIA school... not too impressive.

Silipo or whatever his name is I totally lost track of, where did he go? Maybe he'd rather be a long snapper in the Mtn West that's fine but he was top contributor here.

Everyone is different, some guys are more than happy to go sit on the bench at Utah than be a started for 2 or 3 years at a school like Weber.

Saw this recent article from the Grand Junction paper about Rube's transfer. Still holding to the story that he moved down because he wanted better business opportunities after graduation. Possibly, but there's still more to this story. My guess is that he didn't like the fact that the QB spot wasn't firmly his (yes he would have started game one, but maybe on a short leash), and he was frustrated. Also, the Mesa QB knocks our offensive line, and rightfully so. Rubes was sacked 49 times. He will be missed around Greeley. Best of luck to him.

I have to agree that frustration played a big part in him leaving. I understand Collins wants to create a competitive environment, and have players give it their best all the time. No one job is safe. But I think it backfired on him in this situation. You have to remember it is very easy to disgruntle a young kid. Being told that if we had a game tomorrow he would start, but we are still keeping the qb position open. Then bringing in a kid that is a TE to play QB. If you want to recipe to run a guy off, that's it right there. The kid was the started QB and now he gone. Looks like another 0 to 1 win season. Wish the best for Rubes. He's probably going to go over to Mesa and tear it up.

Good post, and I agree but I think if you ask most fans, they would say that Rubes should be starter (Collins said he would), but the other QB's were right on his tail. Sean probably had one foot planted in that role, but not two. Also, I think you saw in a couple of games where players reacted better when Newsom was in the game. I know we want to blame Collins for everything, and ultimately it is his call, but I'm sure Boyer had some input on who starts, and who doesn't.

I said it before and I will say it again, he saw the writing on the wall that there were better QB's in the wings and he didn't want to sit around as a backup. It will be interesting to see which one scared him off.

It is my opinion that both Bearsfan24 and Beardown have it right on the money. The communication process between the coaches and the players would sure be easier if they were winning. That said, there have been many winning FB programs where the players don't like the HC, but they respected him.

When it comes down to it though, I want kids to stay and compete for jobs. I don't blame Collins or Boyer for not firmly naming him #1 starter and opening the spot up. He had some very good games, but nothing really lights out. Newsom and Berglund are good players and should have the chance to start.

That's the most frustrating part coming from a fans perspective.
