Portland State @ UC Davis Thread

Wow, what a horrible result. I switched to ESPN for the last 5 minutes to see some good football. There were some good things about this game, but I'm really getting sick of all that big talk and not seeing any results. Sure it's a young team, but ultimately, some mistakes are just unforgivable. We lost like a Division II team.

Sorry guys. I was pulling for you since you are a conf. member and because its The Evil Empire. I do have to say though, I really don't like your helmets only because no camera angle looks down from top. I like spear, just not how its positioned. Oh well, see you guys here in two weeks.

Ah man. I hate to see winnable games go down the drain.

I missed the beginning of the game and tuned in at about the start of the 2nd quarter, but in looking at the stats, I can only wonder this:

Was this PSU team not ready to play?

Three penalties and two quick Davis drives put us in a huge hole.

The good:

- We cut down on penalties.
- Passing looked good at times.
- Punting and punt coverage is great.
- Only two sacks given up.
- Kick returns.
- Deshawn Shead

The bad:

- 588 total yards of offense for Davis?!? Are you freaking kidding me?
- 3rd down conversions (3/11).
- Time of possession.

Frustrating. Just when you think that we are about to take the bull by the horns, we fall apart. Woods gets the ball knocked through the endzone inside the three yardline? Ugh. Roughing the kicker followed by a TD run? It's almost hard to fault Worthen on that penalty. He was so close and if he dives to the side of the kicking leg, it's a block. Time of possession will continue to be our achilles heel. Our defense was tired in the 4th quarter. No TDs in the 2nd half in a game that was there for the taking. Smells of last season. :-\

Sorry it took me so long to get over here and post. It is the same aggie6thman, couldn't remember my password and the e-mail address I used was an old one, but here I am.

It was a great game last night. I know you all wish the outcome was different, but it really was closer than it seemed. The 4th down roughing the kicker call and the fumble on the kick off return were huge. Take those two away and it could have been a different result.

Good luck the rest of the way and beat Slac State!

I agree that it was nice to see Shead play well. Also, thought it was nice to see Lavonte Kirven make quite a few catches.

Frustrating loss, but to me the beauty of FCS football is that one loss doesn't ruin a season. There is always a chance because of the playoff system. I know we lost, and this may be a challenging year, but somewhere there's always that little bit of hope that we can get hot and the season can turn out special. I love it!

Well, I have to admit it was nice to see PSU playing a FCS opponent on TV. The highlights of the game looked really good on Sports Sunday and will hopefully attract more viewers for the future.

Thanks for your kind words, 6thman. You seem to have a really good team this season. If our mistakes hadn't been so stupid, it wouldn't have been a shame losing against you guys. And your stadium is a sweet one. :D

Missed opportunities plague Vikings
Portland State lets chances slip away and is downed by UC Davis 38-24

Whoever #35 is for Portland State at CB, keep him in there, he made some nice plays and showed a lot of body control. It was just a couple of missed opportunities for Portland State, my buddies and I were watching a lot of students leave with 6 minutes to go in the 4th and we were all thinking that PSU was still in the game with that run and shoot. You guys are on your way, but Hubel has to be more consistent and accurate with his throws, he let a couple get away for 1st downs.

Without the two UC Davis turnovers I wonder what the score would've been, but putting that aside, it was a pretty balanced matchup, but I think the Viking defense needs to stop the run more consistently, it was either a great play or a lousy one.

Best of luck in Pullman, I think that'll be a shocker to some, but if y'all play smart football and execute you should be in the ballgame. A win won't be a big surprise for me.

Good luck out in Missoula. Stick it to those Griz. :-)

A few comments....

The team has to correct the crap penalties! Discipline on the field is a reflection of the coaching staff. I love Jerry and Mouse, but they have to get control of the team if the other position coaches can't...

The defense is going to be tired period. The run n shoot is all about quick and fast offense. (which we have not really seen yet) The defense will play lots and needs to be deeper. Time of possession will never be in our favor when this offense performs the way it is supposed to!

What in the heck happended with the rush by the Aggies? Did our defense forget/overlook this and prepared for the passing game only?

We need a QB that can play this style of offense. (that is really all I have to say about that)

Jerry did say that these guys need to figure out who the heck they are playing with and who the guy next to them really is... That is something they call gelling and I am afraid that it may not come until next year and by then Bobby, Andy and the rest of the Seniors will be gone....

Digging the TV coverage, it looked great and was a nice chnage.

I think the WSU game will be intersting. I do fear that much like OSU 2 years ago, it will be a close game going into the 3rd quarter. But they are way deeper and probably will just wear our boys out... We have a shot, like we did at OSU...

The Fumble was crap, but I am sure that kid will have a football in his arms all week, in every class, every hour of the day.... 100 bucks to the guy that can take the ball from him and return it to Coach Davis or Glanville!!! (kidding)

Bobby is a junior this year.

I wasn't able to watch this game because I was out of town and my dvr wouldn't record that far in advance, so I would be interested in any comments. I hope comcast replays the game at some future date.

tvguide.com has the game listed to be replayed tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 7:00 pm on Comcast ch. 37.

If I watch it again, a little part of me will end up hoping that this time we don't run into the punter or fumble the ball through the endzone.

I went and watched Cal play Pullman Junior High and let me tell you, my city rec league football team could take on the Cougs. They really are that bad... Good luck against the Cougs, Martin Stadium is really nice and they just opened the new end zone seating.

I liked that little write up by Beseda.

Now that the frustration of the loss is starting to fade, there are actually some good things to take from this game.

- The o line is not a question mark as it was at this point last year.
- Secondary play was a question coming into this season. They've played well.
- Special teams play is better than it was last season.
- And of course, at this point we're still tied for 1st in the Big Sky. :-)

The run opens up the pass, so if we can start to shore up our run defense by not missing assignments and filling those gaps, maybe some good things can happen. The Davis game did show that some of our guys are putting themselves into position to be playmakers. They just need to complete those plays.

Thanks! Just set it up to record the game. I was bummed out that my attempt to record the game was unsuccessful when I got home Sunday evening. The only thing that made it bearable was that I knew we loss the game. Still, I'm interested to see the game. Cal-Davis is a good program, a good school and was a division 2 power, so I was always concerned with this game. Thanks again for the info.
