Possible Coaches

Arslanian might be a good guy but he's been out of football for a long time, and his teams were generally average (he went 53-47). And I don't remember the crowds being any better during his time than they are now. And as Coach Mac said, the program now needs someone at the head that can take it to the next level. IMO, someone from the past days of Weber football mediocrity isn't going to get the program to that next level.

Coach Arslanian was a terrific coach, but being out of college football for 12 years - overall 10 years - his last stint I believe was in the XFL in 2001 - just can't allow him to be in any type of serious consideration. I don't think anyone being out of football that long should be considered for the new HC job. College football has simply changed way too much over the last decade - especially recruiting. Because a decision needs to be made very quickly (hopefully right after the season ends b/c of recruiting, etc.) I'd guess that either Eck or Klune has to be the choice - and either would be great because of their past relationships with Weber and with Coach Mac.

Do you have a clue about what any of the coaches you listed you would like to see kept ACTUALLY do??? Apparently not based on a few of your suggestions...

I'd have to agree. I was surprised someone like Arslanian, or some of these other guys, was even mentioned. But then that's what a fan forum is for, give everyone a chance to speak, regardless of how ridiculous it may or may not be. It's just a good thing we aren't the ones charged with selecting a new head coach.

Assume you are ripping N.OgdenCat's initial post on this thread about assistant coaches. Not that I agree or disagree with him, but what are you saying? Tell us who you think should stay or go, and why [instead of just ripping his opinion]? Just trying to keep it civil.

Actually, I do.

Regardless, they are my opinions. I'm not perfect. So, if I forgot someone, or put someone on a list that shouldn't be, then; sorry. As has been stated previously, this is a forum. If nothing more, a collections of opinions. So, please share what you think. I'd really like to know. In all seriousness, I think Eck is a no brainer, but once again, that is what I think.

Why?

He knows the program
He helped recruit a number of the current players
The players know him
He knows how the program has been built, he was part of it, and I would bet, has a pretty good idea where the program needs to go, and how to get it there.
He is an offensive guy (even though our defense needs some seriuos overhall) who will get the most from our lines and offense.
Finally, he has already been at Weber and knows the culture, attitude, and expectations of the school and area.

Only reason we are still playing football at weber is because of Dave. I was on that committee(save football) with him and there isn't a more hard working and loyal to weber guy on this planet. I don"t know if he would want to come back or not but if he did you would sure want to listen. As i recall he was the complete package for weber at the time. USU probably screwed him up so bad he wouldn't want to look at another coaching job again, they pulled the trigger after 2 years, total BS!
Absolutely. I'm Mac was a master of recruiting, Arslanian was a master of selling tickets and filling the stands. He currently runs a program for troubled youth with his brother, so I wouldn't be shocked if he showed no interest.
Look, Im probably the biggest Dave Arslanian fan around here, but to say that the stands were filled while he was here is a complete joke! Arslanian got NO support from administration and the stands were mostly empty his entire career here. Yes I do think he would do a great job as head coach here again, he is a great guy and an offensive genius.
Nobody said the stands were filled when Arslanian was here. You're absolutely right. The stands have NEVER been filled in the history of the program. What I meant was, Arslanian single-handedly saved the football program by spearheading a grass roots campaign that set attendance records that haven't been matched since. Despite coaching the squad to a mediocre 5-6 season, WSU finished the 1994 season with almost 13,000 fans per home game. Paul Thompson and Tom Stewart did nothing to help him and he still pulled it off.

Arslanian is not a candidate this year. :wall:

you are probably right with that assumption. He has been out of football for too long. Nonetheless, he was a good coach, and is a great guy. Most important, he loves Weber State.

I'm fully aware, sir. We just got off-topic a bit.

History should repeat itself.
When Mac left Utah, they hired.....

Urban Myer

Chances of history actually repeating itself?

Zero - But, here's to hoping that history repeats itself in other ways. No doubt that Mac created the foundation for the success that Utah had with Urban Myer and now with Wittingham. Like Old Runner's signature says: Momentum is like a fire. Hope that Weber can get the right coach to keep things moving upwards.

waldo,

handing over the program to an urban meyer type, well it was too soon. he needed more time. mac built utah from scratch. he was building weber but needed more time, look at all these upgrades that happened. no chance that would have happened without him. i hope the new projects still happen and dont come to a halt. i was hoping mac could remain the coach for another 3-4 yrs to increase the chance the next coach could maintain or improve.

i hope we can get a good coach to take over.

Mac was/is great - no doubt about it. Hope we all show our support for him and the program on Saturday. He deserves it. So what about an up an comer assistant ( I can think of at least two on the Ute staff that will one day be great HCs ) with no previous ties to Weber? Or do we need someone who has lived our history? The names mentioned before are convenient and good choices - but to take the next step there are probably a few more possibilities.
Thanks to Mac for a mighty boost to the program and here's hoping that he has a very visible association with us for years to come.

I think that an old-school Coach like Mac was what we needed to build our foundation but now we need an innovator, much like Urban Meyer was to take the Utah program over the top. If we could rob an OC/DC from an up and coming program that would be ideal.

I certainly don't want anyone thinking that I am "ripping on" your opinion. What I am trying to point out is that our opinions are much more founded when they are based on facts. I am merely suggesting that you may not know what contributions some of the people you listed actually make to the staff as a whole.

For instance, Kamaal. He was supposed to be a position coach when he first got here. He wasn't living up to expectations on that front, so he got moved to a general assistant for the defense. He still wasn't living up to expectations, so he got moved to Football Operations...

Dyson certainly knows football. But he is coaching out of his love for the game. As a result, he gets paid minimally and, therefore, spends minimal time in the office during the day as well.

Beck also is another person that is rarely seen around the office during the day or in the evenings...

I don't question the abilities of ANY of these coaches as far as their love of the game is concerned. But it is certainly not fair--or conducive to winning--when the bulk of the work is done by only a few.

I agree that Don would be a decent replacement. He is familiar with the program and a few of the players. My only hesitation is wondering if he is too close to Mac to make some necessary changes--specifically cutting some of the players who do not take their roles, their scholarship, or the team's success seriously. There are several players on the roster who are trouble--they are at the root of issues off the field, don't live up to par academically, and they aren't even impact players on the field PLUS they are lazy and have terrible attitudes. The fat needs to be trimmed. Is Eck going to worry about what Mac thinks????

APR is an issue for WSU football as it is. But I think that the University, the President, and Bovee would certainly be understanding if a few of these players were cut loose as a new staff comes on.

Love the list N. OgdenCat. Let's hope you're on the committee!!!

I AGREE with trimming the chaff from the roster.... you have guys leaving their guts on the field and you have pretty boys. you have players and you have cliques, you have committed vs. wannabe's.

the team in 2008 had many different players but they all came together for one thing....TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP........they gave a st!t about the team and their team mates, bottom line.

I wonder if Weber State would consider trying to lure Robb Akey away from Idaho? Probably can't afford it, though. :coffee:

Drop all the speculation... :blah: :blah: :blah:! Our new coach will be ex Weber player, John L. Smith, current special teams coordinator at Arkansas. He wants it; is actively lobbying for it; is pulling out all the stops to get it!! I predict he will be the next head football coach at Weber State. :stir:
