Post Game reactions

Ok, having sobered up, here's my final impressions from the game.

Offense:
You could certainly tell it was the first game. The whole squad looked tense for the first couple of series (pretty normal). I liked how Padron calmed down as the game went on. He did tend to hold the ball a bit long at times, and seemed to be not quite in sync with his receivers. Then again, he made some fantastic throws on the run and under pressure, so I'm very optimistic about it.
Receivers were ok. A couple passes were dropped but again, i chalk that up to first game nervous energy. It's no secret we have a stable of talent!
I was encouraged to see our run game pick up in the second half, especially the ability to break off some yardage when we needed it the most. Bottom line: Not a bad way to start the year. We'll have to cut down on mental mistakes and be more fundamentally sound on a consistent basis. If that happens, then watch out...we could be scary good.

Defense:
Best surprise of the game IMO. Our D was flying around and played GREAT. Idaho's receivers were frustrated all night and guys were swarming to the ball when a catch was made. The D-line did a good job of pressuring their Q and, most importantly, stopping the run! There were very few instances of broken contain and of course, the blown assignment which led to Idaho's only points. Our guys were playing with passion and energy, and it completely demoralized the opponent.
Bottom line: Keep the momentum going! Great way to start.

Special Teams:
Solid. I was very impressed with our punter's ability to win the field position battle. Coverage was good, and protection seemed decent. There were a couple times where I thought we may give up a blocked kick, but almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Continue to be stout and take care of the little things. PAT protection needs to be firmed up as well. The only gaffe was when we went for the block early on when Idaho was punting out of the end-zone. Why even get close? If the block is there, great. If not, we'll still get the ball inside of the 50. Instead, we let them off the hook which led to the long pass and field goal.
Bottom line: Good, just need to clean up some small things.

One last point. We MUST be more disciplined in all phases. 14 penalties (or whatever it was) is WAYYYY too much, and it kept us from getting a true rhythm for most of the game. If we would have played more penalty free, it could have easily been a 40-0 curbstomping instead of a solid 20-3 victory. I'll take the win, but this week we will need to be MUCH better. The Cougs are wounded now, and they'll be eager for redemption in front of what will surely be close to a sellout crowd in Pullman.

Can't wait for next weekend... PS, tune in to the Eagle Pre-Game show for a little extra Eagle-Cougar smack about 45 mins before kick off!

Is this going to be what I think it's going to be?

Agreed with most sentiments here. Offense needs some work, Padron does not seem to be on the same page as everyone. I suppose that's expected after missing spring ball. Defense surpassed expectations in my mind. As did the run game. Don't know if the refs had it in for us or our line needs that much work, but all the "holding" and "false start" calls need to be fixed. Idaho was generally terrible. Great game to attend though, Eagle attendance was solid. :thumb:

Well, I guess this explains it.

Said Padron after the game, “There’s no point in playing if you think you’re going to lose,” while explaining that the false starts were mostly due to a new cadence.

“We’ll get that cleaned up,” he said.

By the way, hearing about 1000 eagle fans sing "Na na na na, hey hey, goood bye" in the final minutes was pretty awesome. Yesterday was a great day.

It's certainly a great day to be an Eagle! EWU surprised me defensively and I'm not all that worried about the offense. They'll get it together with each day that passes, but the running game is what was the best of all! If they can run the ball like that all year, special things could happen.

I can't believe how bad Idaho is.. They are at best a middle of the road Big Sky team IMO. I can't wait for next Saturday, I really believe EWU has a good chance of beating the Cougs. What a feeling that would be!! Can't wait kickoff!

Great game yesterday! Wish I could of attended but i will be there to cheer on the boys next week against wazzu. Thought EWU played a great game all around despite those issues on offense, those will get ironed out. Was really impressed with our defense and the ability to have a balanced offensive attack by running the ball. Nothing like starting the year out right, 1-0!

Let's just remember that Padron didn't get to play Spring Ball with this team. Everything he accomplished vs Idaho came from working only these past few weeks.

Absolutely.

Long way to go to compete for a BSC title ! That was a middle of the road BSC team at best. WSU wont be as easy. Mental mistakes on the O-line cost us a couple TD's and I know we have more than Kaufman for a reciever ! Padron looked outta sync with his core recievers and got lucky on a couple big pass plays. That being said it was sure nice to start with a win this year versus the past 2 or 3 years with a loss ! Much room for improvement on offense, I'm sure Best will work it out. Looks like the D will carry us this year much like the NC season, Hamlin was lights out AKA Sherrit, thats exciting ! Schedule doesnt favor us the next 3 weeks but splitting those games probably gets us in contention for a playoff spot ! Go Eags !!

offense: I am cautiously optimistic that this could be a very efficient offense this season with the improvement in the running game and several players that have big play capability. Padron was a little "rough around the edges" but give him time its obvious the talent is there and he will be a solid game manager for us this season. We wont put up 2011 passing yards but its like Baldwin has already said that will be a good thing. as everyone else mentioned the best part of this game for me was when our offensive line started owning the vandal D in the 4th quarter and they could not stop the run. so refreshing to watch after last years frustrations of not being able to run on ANYBODY!

Grade: C+

defense: they exceeded my expectations and i thought that they had a very solid performance. anytime you hold an opponent to 3 points is reason to be excited. The energy was unreal and I loved watching white jerseys swarm to the ball any time idaho made a play. It was an impressive performance by all but the players that really stood out in my mind were Hamlin, Day, Lee, and Pulu. We will need this kind of performance by our D to win the Big Sky outright and come playoff time.

Grade: A

special teams: in my opinion the ST played a large role in this "W". we constantly gave them the long field to drive and the punting was exceptional. Miller is very good and 2/2 from Pavel on FG's you cant ask for much more.

Grade: A

My reflections:

Defensively, I loved how the guys were flying around. The front seven is very good and didn't give up a lot of plays. Hamlin was everywhere, seemed like he was in on every tackle. Minus the one big play they gave up on broken coverage, the secondary played really well and manhandled the Idaho receivers.

After all the disappointment in the defense last year, I wanted to reiterate how great it was to see this year's version back in form. Evan Cook and Evan Day getting pressure on the QB and registering sacks, Zack Johnson looking healthy and in form and Ronnie Hamlin making team high tackles. And that doesn't even account for the depth at LB - we had Cody McCarthy coming in as a back up and Grant Williams only got 5 plays on defense in relief of Hamlin but had 3 tackles, a broken up pass and a forced fumble. Our DB's gave up 1 big play but on the flip side had the force out play in the end zone that prevented a TD (reminiscent of Jeff Minnerly in the Chipper). It was a great all round effort!

Go EAGS!

Reminds me of '03 when we held Idaho to 5 pts (and SDSU to 19 the week before) thinking our "D" was special. For some reason it started going downhill after that giving up 29 to Central and a short while later gave up 55 vs Idaho State. Our offense back then wasn't near as good as this one(Meyer's soph season) so hopefully our "D" won't have to spend as much time on the field. Also, I think we have more depth than back then. Have a good feeling this season.

Right there with you Hannah. I always get so excited by our offense, but this defense is special. It's really fun to watch them fly around and wreak havoc. This could be a real fun year.

This is an excellent point. Despite all his D-1 experience, he's still had only 4 weeks to learn the offense with his teammates. I'm confident that the offense will improve as he gets more comfortable. Great win though. Beating a D-1 team on the road is always a good thing. Can't wait to see the improvement at Pullman next week. Need a great turn-out.

I hope we beat all six of our D-1 road opponents this season. Just sayin. 8-)

Game film on this game will be invaluable, especially this early in the season.I would hope to see great strides from this week to next.
