Post Game Thoughts

Fired, no. But it looks like losing in the semis is what we have to look forward to. It's just what this coaching staff does.

So what you're saying is that winning Big Sky championships and making deep playoff runs is going to continue to be the norm? I'll take it every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

There's 12 other teams in our conference and around 90 others team in the FCS that would love to have this problem.

I was kidding. But this coaching staff also won a NC. I mean when you get to the Semis, the other guys are pretty good too.

The YSU O line did a great job. Our guys had a tough time slowing down their run game. In the end I think that was the the primary deciding factor.

Agreed. Our guys just could not tackle that tailback.

As much as I want to dwell on everything that could've gone differently tonight, I am happy with the season as a whole. Before the season would've started I was hoping they could sneak into the playoffs and maybe steal a win in the playoffs. I've enjoyed the ride and most definitely the careers of Kupp, Bourne, and Hill.

Well said. Nobody believed that this team could go as far as it did this year. Thanks guys for such an exciting season!

Yes, Baldwin should be fired.

Fired up that is :D It seems that he has done a really good job of using these misses at motivation for the team. There are very few teams that have been as successful as EWU since 2010, and though I'd love to see us just get over that ledge of the semifinal, when keeping things in perspective, I'm glad we have the opportunity to be disappointed, if that makes sense. We could be the Griz, or worse yet, the majority of the FCS that really isn't relevant on a championship level scale. We are, and will continue to be a contender, that occasional 6-5 season notwithstanding. We have so much talent coming back next year, and a defense that is evolving. Honestly, if this was the rebuilding year, what does next year hold?!?

Fricken eh, I'm starting to get fired...fired up, that is! Knowing we have a solid foundation is about the only thing taking a bit of the sting off of tonight.

What a tough result. This game reminded me of the Towson game from 2013. Our defense is built to defend the pass and it just seems when we go up against these type of teams that run the ball really well we aren't able to stop them.

Great season and I've really enjoyed chatting with you all. I was hoping to meet some of you all down in Frisco but I guess it will have to wait until next year!

It was disheartening for sure to watch them crane the ball down our throats in the 2nd half. I know guys like this are hard to find, but we need to get a Renard Williams type guy that is 300+ who can plug the middle against the run. Ever since he graduated, it feels like we haven't been able to really stop the run.

Love this team, and being an Eagle fan. We will be back again, and when we make it back to Frisco it will means so much more.

I agree, when a coach willfully looks the other way for the last 5 seasons and either can't or wont fix the defense you either get used to it or make changes. We settle.

None of those words that you made are true things that have happened.

He changed d coordinators, defensive scheme and the d has improved. I don't think people appreciate how incredibly hard it is to win late in the playoffs.

We just gave up 506 yards and lost the TOP 39:20 to 20:40. Please stop with the excuses.

Fact is our defense is horrible and has been for years. I stand by my original comments Baldwin either does not know how to fix the defense or he doesn't care. If we want to take the next step and be an elite team we need to have a complete team and not just a good offense. Maybe you want to settle for getting bounced in the semis, there is too much talent to have this happen year after year.

I get the frustration, but this defense is improving. YSU was a freaking semi-finalist, for crying out loud. It's not like we were playing cupcake U! TOP was as much or more of an effect of our offensive playcalling as it was of the defense. When you only take two minutes to score, and the team you are playing is a grind it out running team that likes to hike the ball with little time left on the playclock, there may be a bit of a disparity there.

The defense isn't elite yet. The running game isn't elite yet. Special teams aren't elite yet. I think all three of those facts effected this game, some more than others. But with all of that, I would still say that the biggest factors were actually the two INT's, both of which YSU turned into points. So, the most elite part of our team may have cost the game. Especially that INT in which we were in position to go up three scores. If that was a score instead of an interception, I believe this game turns out differently.

It's easy to point the finger at the D. But the D is so much better than the last few years. The fact is, we played a YSU team that is on the rise, with a chip on their shoulder, and some really strong elements to their team. They just beat us. That happens in football. Doesn't mean we suck.

Great Season. Super proud of this team, coaches and fans.

game summary...
This was not the defense we had seen the last 7 or so games. The situational personnel and odd line play stunting cost them stops on several 3rd and longs. Twice on the last two YSU drives the QB ran for first downs when the line stunted the DT out of the middle, DE's pushing hard up field and everyone else deep. ?????? It felt very much like Graham was making the calls. There was a certain state of denial all season about the LB's ability to cover backs and TE's and to watch Ketner getting beat by Webb on a long third down and then the TE late was frustrating. We have a whole barn full of safety types who can tackle and cover. Anyway, the second half was a matter of coaching "vapor lock". No changes needed, just experience.

There is a lot of talent returning on both sides of the ball. So early prediction... we take it to NDSU on the Inferno next fall :-)
