"Failure for this program." I don't view this program as a failure. Quite the opposite in fact.
If you were to say "the defense is the reason we haven't made it back to the national championship game" then I might agree. But then again, there were other reasons we lost, such as not taking care of the ball on offense, and poor special teams play and questionable calls. It was a total team loss, not just on the defense. Every kid on that team played their guts out yesterday.
Failure is a strong term. The kids play hard and I'm not sure why there's such a gap between offensive and defensive success and it's a fair question to ask why. Our defense , in the semi's, have been liability and not an asset. I don't buy into the "west cost recruiting defensive players" stuff as I believe we have good players on this roster. The defensive has gotten better from last year and I just hope the coaches think outside of the BSC when they make defensive adjustments over the winter.
I also don't think we have to to start from scratch, I think we're close just need minor adjustments. I thought we were a year a way, so I was surprised at our success this year. I still believe next year is the year our defense will make a statement, and once that happens, we will be a true national champion candidate- on both sides of the ball.
This is exactly what I thought before the season started. I picked EWU to be 7-4 and squeak into the playoffs as a bubble team. But with the recruiting EWU has done, the youth of the team, and the gradual improvement of the D, I really thought we wouldn't be at this spot till next year. The fact we were really a couple of plays here and there away from the NC game, we are trending much higher than anticipated.
It freaking hurts to lose a game like we did on Saturday. Heck, that's just the way football is. We love the incredible wins, but nothing has sucked more than EWU's losses in the playoffs to SHSU in 2004, SHSU in 2012, Towson in 2013, and now YSU. The ISU game in 2014 and UNI in 2005 don't bother me as much, and I wasn't at the YSU game in 97, though I listened to it on the radio. Those all are painful because we could've, and probably even should've won every one of them. It reminds me of the Seahawks vs Patriots in the SB. Those are just gut-punches. But I will take those games a million times over performing like SHSU did on national television versus JMU. We just gotta get over the hump.
Not trying to be a homer, but I still think that next year is our year. And I think EWU could be an App St dynasty if we can get it rolling.
