Post Season Grades

Okay Bear fans, I'll go by each unit and give them an over-all grade and a bit of commentary. I'd like to see what you guys think as well.

QB - B-. Obviously I was very unhappy when Lobato was named starter, but looking back it was probably the right move. After the first few games he played pretty well. He has a cannon for an arm and his accuracy improved. He seemed to hold on to the ball to much and he's not very mobile. I'm looking forward to seeing him as a full-time starter the next couple years.

Offensive line. F. Granted they weren't coached up, they were horrible. The QB's probably had 1.5 seconds to throw in the pocket and they had zero lanes for the running backs. Also, you could bet Big Lee Barbeizze (spelling?) or Nick Candler getting false starts in crucial moments during games. If they had a full-time coach, they would probably do better though.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends. C. Pat Walker elevated his game, but other than that, they weren't that good. The tight ends weren't good either. I know we didn't throw the ball a lot to them but Doug Steele couldn't hold on to the ball when he did catch it.

Running Backs. D-. I think Hildreth will be good and it's hard to judge because they didn't have many lanes opened from the o-line. Burnley? Will he ever be healthy?

Defensive line. D- Hardly any pass rush with this group and I thought they were going to be a lot better before the season started. Good young players with Lex Smith and Chappele.

Linebackers. B. Bumpas is a rising star in the FCS and should be on the Buchannon list at the start of next season. Gavin Miller and Cameron Friend are solid.

Corners/Secondary. F. Couldn't cover anyone. Slow to the ball and didn't have anyone in the top 10 in the conference for interceptions and pass break-ups. Opposing offenses drooled at the thought of throwing against us.

Special Teams. D-. Dave Eden is horrible and cost us the game against North Dakota. Cameron Kamen didn't have a good season. Dominic Gunn was a darn good returner.

Coaching. D-or F. I like Collins, but as I've said many times before he needs to cut lose some of these assistant coaches. I can't stand either coordinator so hopefully he starts there.

Coaching Staff "F-" Collins' did not embrace his existing players from the start, treated "his" recruits better than the return players. That was obvious.

I think you pretty much nailed it Beardown !! I think the OC needs to be more creative as once again we were so predictable. We can all armchair Collins grade but I I really think his grade will improve by a couple of notches next season !!

My question is, who played/coached well enough to win. I have to exclude Bumpas and Walker , but summative grades are F across the board,Were there improvements????? Sure, in some cases. In most cases, the lack of coaching resulted in many players taking a step backwards.
The good news is that grades can only go up next season. Not just "hard work", but "smart work"not only on a physical level, but real team development can go a long way.
Let the next grading period begin!
