Practice / Scrimmage Notes for those that can't attend

Hello Eags Fans. I know many of you can't make practice so I thought I'd share with you what I have picked up at the several practices I have attended. I suppose the first thing I have noticed that has been very impressive (but not surprising) is how well organized our team is from the top down. The practices are fast paced and technique teaching goes on throughout every phase. Our staff is highly skilled and we are lucky to have them. I've been to many college practices over the years and ours ranks right up there with the best of them.

Some players I have noticed, some of whom we always hear about and others that I think are just rising.

I'll start with #10, Cooper Kupp sets the tone in everything he does. I suppose it would be fair to say he is the hardest working player in the program and he works so many aspects of his game every time he moves his feet. With Coop it's not just about a quick take off, blazing speed, or even running the great route. He also works on the other aspects of his game every play, like catch (proper form), tuck the ball away as quickly as possible, and then he sprints with a full burst down the field making the required cuts to avoid the tacklers if they were tackling him (although most the time they are not). This is why in the games it seems so easy for him to make plays, and why in my mind he is our best player. I have really come to appreciate what he brings to our program as a player, student, and leader.

Aaron Neary #72 also displays alot of the same characteristics as Coop. In particular, he helps coach up the OL and when the ball is snapped he only knows one gear and that is full speed ahead. He also encourages his fellow OL and really helps set the tone for that group. He is such a superior athlete for his position that I think the sky is the limit, and I think he will be our next drafted OL (my guess is to play Center in the NFL).

#82 is one of our TE's and he consistently gets open inside. He is our one big man too that catches everything that comes his way. I don't know what his name is as that number isn't on the roster, but he's around 6'5 and 235/245. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that right now in practice he is outplaying the rest of the group, which is saying alot considering Cam Wimberly #9 is there and is a good consistent player. #82 has some inside quickness though that is very noticeable and I haven't seen him drop a single ball. He is getting reps with the #1's so its pretty obvious the coaches see it too. He is playing at an All Big Sky level right now, and if he keeps it up he will really open things up for West and Coop.

#7: I have no idea who this player is, but he also works very hard, and is impressive on both his routes and his transitioning from a WR to runner after the catch. He is also a very willing blocker and runs many routes extremely well. Heck of a competitive player we have here and also sets the tone with the way he works.

QB's: Everyone always wants to hear, so here it goes. West is the best and I might also add I think he is also getting better faster than the rest. That said, they can all play. #12 Henessey is the best on the roll outs and throws, #15 GG has great accuracy, and Frosh #16 has a VERY strong arm, and is very skilled on medium range routes. He may have the strongest throw on the team in the outside flats. West though is just good at everything in terms of his throws. If our running game is as good as I expect it to be this year, West will thrive and defenses will have to play us honest. To have this many players playing at this level I just can't say enough about Coach Hill. Just an outstanding QB developmental coach. :notworthy:

DT's 99, 94, and 97 take up alot of space and are really good inside. I think #94 is a solid player that really hustles, seems to lead when in too. #99 though is just a beast and I see All Big Sky potential in him. He really stuffs the run especially well, and has a nice bull rush too. #97 does it all and those 3 players are really going to compliment the outside players like Samson #91. I think the fate of our defense rests with the big guys up front keeping those OL guys off our speedy LB's and SS on the outside.

#4 Raynes was one of my favorite players last year, and I expect him to make a strong push for Defensive Player of the Year. I don't mind saying that about him this early because his work ethic and skill set is perfect for our new defense. I'll stand by this guy any day in a fight on the field because he will find a way to get his job done and help you do yours too. I like everything about his coverage, tackling, and overall versatility.

LB's: All faster than what we have seen, and a few have quick reaction to the right spot on the field all the time. There will be growing pains, but the speed and athleticism here will be complimented by the new scheme and those big DL up front.

Kicker #45: Dude works hard all practice long and has by far the strongest leg on the field. He seems like a superior athlete as well. Very confident and just works hard while others stand around and shoot the breeze. I don't usually get excited about kickers, but I like this guy and he looks like he could actually run down field and slam someone too. If the smoke in the air does'nt cancel the scrimmage we may see a kicking competition. Be sure to watch this guy kick, he's actually someone to be excited about. He has a big toe.

RB's #2 and frosh #20 are really standing out to me. Wilson has so much flash and really seems to understand where the hole is going to be and just has a knack for bursting through at the right time. I know we have a bunch of quality RB's but Wilson is very impressive. #20 McPherson is getting a lot of reps and today he broke a long run and turned a few short catches on 3rd down into long plays for us. One went over 40 years and his long run was about 35 yards. He did a solid job picking up blitzes too. Great kid, looking forward to watching him develop along with this outstanding Frosh OL.

I saw one player that seemed to have a boo boo on his wrist/hand, and another 8 or so that looked like they were sick. They weren't walking like they were hurt and had no wraps. I wont list numbers as that could cross a line. A few that didn't practice in the AM did practice in the PM. I hear the bad air has some of the boys sick.

Lastly, Air quality may lead to Saturday's scrimmage being cancelled. I'll post on this thread later tonight when I hear back for sure if Vic doesn't beat me too it.

That's it for now EAG fans!

Thanks for the write up. Now I am wondering who all these jersey numbers are though.
I did figure out #7 is #13 on game days.

I think the #7 you may be talking about is the actual #7, Sblendorio. #13 on the roster is a DB.

I'll echo the sentiments from above...thanks for the report! Hopefully the air starts to clear up some.

That is the correct name on #7. Thanks for the help on it!

GO EAGS! Scrimmage is on for 9:45 am. See you all there. The players will be signing afterward and there will be EWU goodies available.
I'm expecting to see a new focus on the running game today. I think this team has the mentality and skillset to be a powerful ground force this season!

That's it for now EAG fans!

A number of players came down with a 24 hour type flu this week and one practice was even cancelled as a result.

I'm really, really enjoying the day as the scrimmage was excellent on most fronts. As expected, the team is fast and we will see new things on both sides of the ball this season. A number of players did not participate. Since it's so close to the season starting in most cases I'll avoid specifics about any of it, but almost no injuries are keeping players out. It's mostly the air quality (flu symptoms) and some minor things.

Players that shined:

WR's: Did not scrim: #10, 11, 1?
#83, 82, 88, 7,and 22 all had impressive routes and catches. Our bigger WR's overwhelmed the DB's a bit today on hooks and curls. It was there most the time we took it. #22 Webster was IMO one of the top performers of the scrimmage and he broke a bubble screen 55 yards for a TD on the best play of the day on Offense. He is explosive and will be a HUGE factor this year starter or not.

RB's: No shock here. #2 broke a run or almost broke a run every time he touched the ball. He may prove to be the best RB in the Big Sky. Coach McDonald has really brought Wilson along and this guy may have monster stats this year. He is special. #20 Frosh RB Sam McPherson had a ton of time in the scrimmage and was very solid today, especially at picking up his pass blocking assignments, which is a large factor for playing time. All the RB's can run the ball or they wouldn't be here, it's the guys that can run great routes, catch the ball, and pick up blocking assignments that shine. #20 is doing just that and he is a very confident player.

QB's: West really separated himself today IMO, but all the guys at QB played well enough for us to be excited. West was highly accurate in particular. I was very impressed today with how he moved the machine and kept us in good situations. West is throwing a better ball in 2015 and I think his most improve quality is accuracy, but that is just an opinion. He is going to be a special player Eag fans. Just wait and see!

OL: Our top two Centers did not participate, but we looked at 4 or 5 players at Center with mixed results.
A couple of our centers struggled with their snaps and blocking assignments, but no surprise Neary was quite good at Center and could easily play there in a pinch. I suspect that will be his position if he transitions to the next level (NFL). His snaps were sharp and of course he did his normal superior job blocking and making calls. Frosh Center #50 Codi McGuire also had a great day. His Center snaps were on target (none too high and none too low or rolling back) and got there quickly, and he did more than an adequate job on his blocking assignents. Given the problems we saw in the spring and from a few centers today rolling them back to the QB several times, it was good to see that we have two more players that can step in and snap should we need them.

LB: They looked fast, and did a good job covering the pass inside vs our TE's. Most the catches came on the bigger WR's on our CB's. The starting D stuffed the run pretty well, and the LB's were the first to get there both on inside runs and on the edge! Noteable: LB #43 Gall had a pick 6 from about 60 yards. The ball was deflected by someone in coverage, then Gall made a nice play finding it and getting upfield. He seems like a very nose to the ball type player.

DL: The big DL inside couldn't really be blocked and pushed away, but on a few plays they were influenced away from the ball by OL and that allowed gains by the Offense. The DL coaches are such high energy coaches and do an amazing job coaching up their players, at times the DL was an unmovable force. A few key guys didn't scrimmage or played very little, so as good as it was, and it was good, it could have been even better. I'd say I expect our DL to be one of our teams greatest strengths in 2015. #99, #97, and #94 are really tough to block and they controlled the middle in most cases. I'm very high on #99 as a very special player. He just fits the part for a DT in the 4-2-5 and I suspect he will have an amazing season for us as an Eagle.

#4 Raynes was all over the field, and had the defensive play of the day IMO when the Offense tried to sweep his way and he flew up on the outside edge and blew it up for a 7 yard loss. The fans loved it and he clearly saw it coming from a mile away. Hopefully his mental smarts on the field will rub off on our younger guys as they learn the game. Anyhow, as I expected #4 had another great day!

Kicker #45: Just a 70 yard punt by this kid today under pressure, and yes he shined. His punt was one of the top 5 plays of the day. He was also perfect on FG/PAT and we had kickers miss a few kicks.

CB's: A little soft underneath today, and the offense took it as it was given. Some starters did not play in the scrimmage, and it showed a little. If I had to say one thing good or bad in terms of someone "winning" today, it would be the tall WR's on the outside significantly beat up on our CB's, but alot of kids got in and it wasn't just any one player. Anyhow I think the CB's will rise and do just fine but today was not their day.

G&P Top 5 surprises:
#22 WR Webster: Offensive Playmaker of the day
#50 Center McGuire: quality blocking and highest quality Center snap percentage
#20 RB McPherson: Overall ran hard inside and outside, blocking continues to improve
#88 WR Grady: made some tough in traffic catches and kept the chains moving.
#5 QB West (for near complete dominance guiding the offense. I knew he'd be good, but I didn't understand until today just how good he will be) :notworthy:

Scrimmage player of the day: WR #22 Webster 5 catches, 125 yards and the longest play from scrimmage.

Thanks G&P.

Not surprised to hear about any of the players you pointed to. Very glad Tiuli made the move from offense to defense last year (#99). He was a beast on video when he signed. Agree with you that there is no reason the DL won't become one of the best. Experience and time will tell. Gall is definitely a ball hawker as a former safety. Lots of options with speed and aggression at LB. Great news about the center snaps and West's command of the offense. Can't wait for the first game, ordered Pac 12 networks just to get it. They actually have EWU v UW and EWU v OSU the night before. Nirvana. Thanks again for the effort.

Some nice pics. team looks super athletic...

Thanks for the write up G&P. I love what our whole team brings to the table this year. This will be a solid unit all year even though I suspect there will be a few growing pains early on which is normal. Once we start to gel and become more cohesive, I believe this team will become dominate. O-line and D-line is where it all starts, and I love our boys. I would agree with your assessment of Simba Webster. Even with our other stud WR's, I still think he will be the X-factor that teams will have a hard time game-planning for. He had 5 catches for 128 yards today. By the end of this season, casual Eagle fans will no longer think of the Lion King first when they hear the name Simba. He is going to EXPLODE this year!!!

It will be interesting watching teams trying to double Coop and at the same time trying to find ways to stop our other stud WR's one-on-one. I honestly don't know why a team wouldn't try to double Coop. Maybe they play zone. In that case guys like Sblendorio should have a field day finding holes to sit down in. Love Sblendorio's understanding of the game. Who do you game plan for if you're a DC? I haven't even mentioned guys like Bourne, Hill, Grady, etc.... And I'm only talking about our air-assault so far. Ground game just got interesting with our freshman RB's. I wholeheartedly agree with you about J. Wilson. This kid is shifty and finds a way to pick up yards in tight spaces. It will be interesting to see how Baldwin splits up the reps this year at RB.

Obviously talent will not be the issue on this team, it will be getting guys on the same page. Once that happens we will be tough to beat.

Thanks again for the write-up.

go eags!

Today was fun, first this morning's scrimmage, then Pac 12 network had the EWU/UW game on the 60 minute replay. That was a lot of game to pack into 60 minutes.
This years defense will be better than last year, but I don't know by how much. We will get to see their speed at Oregon and then just how good they can be in Iowa. I do know they will be up to the task for Montana State. There are a lot of great looking Freshman , and big, running around on the red turf this fall.

Speaking of the N.Iowa game I was told today by a fan the team is selling tickets on the plane (same flight as the team) to go to the game. Anyone know whats thats all about or how much?

G&P I too think that the D line is a big key to the season. Also I think Jordan West can run faster than most people think he can but when he get up to speed his long legs start chewing up yardage pretty fast. When we play the ducks I would love to see BB roll him out to the right, set up throw a 30 yard strike to just let the competition know that our QB has changed but our offensive philosophy hasn't.

I think our offense will continue to be a 40 point offense in most games. If we can get 3 legitimate stops per game via turnovers or punt we will be in every game. I think our run defense will be outstanding, but we'll see. I'm very confident in our DT's and DE's. I feel the same about our SS/OLB's. Our CB's will need to continue to improve and if they can generate an INT or two each week we'd really be sitting in great shape. :thumb:
