I started a new topic, since a number of entries were under the "2008 football season" and this makes a little more sense.

Football Practice Log: Day 8, Tuesday August 12

Any news on how Shackford is looking thus far in camp? I noticed that Nathan has listed Ma'aseia and Beckley as the probably starters (just due to reps in camp at this point), but I was curious as to how Shackford is looking.

I'm going to try to hit practice on Saturday (am) for a look myself, but I'm curious of what others have seen.

Both Pedersens sound like great additions. David looks like a beast:

I'm starting to get optimistic about this season. (Quick, somebody save me from inevitable disappointment and toss some caution my way.) If the defense is even remotely improved and the offense is a little better (both likely), we could have a winning record and suprise some people. I was looking up FCS stats for last season and it is 1) hard to believe how horrible our defense really was in 2007, and 2) hard to believe we could be that bad again in 2008.

I'll grab you from falling into the burning pit of optimism. ;-)

1) Center. We don't have a center that can consistently get the ball to the QB at this point, and we have a game in like 17 days. If we see the "O Line Shuffle" like we did after the first couple of games last year to see who can keep the ball off the turf, we may just need to plug in Ole Vicor E Viking in at the center spot, because we don't have Carvalho to fall back on this season.

2) Depth in the secondary. Brown seems to be taking it easy on the knee, so that makes me think he's not 100%. Maybe he is, and maybe he's not, but with just over two weeks to go this doesn't seem good. It's probably just caution, but the defense really needs him to be a star this year for the unit to shine.

3) The Run & Shoot. The quick hitting style of the R/S will show us if we've addressed our depth issue on defense around the 80 - 100 mark on the defensive side of the ball. Only 62 of the 418 points we gave up last year were in the first quarter. It didn't take our defense long to run out of gas last year due to depth in key positions of the 3-4.

I must admit, I too am getting a bit optimistic. Not sure if it's just the arrival of a new season, some sort of blind faith, or the the fact of just how bad our 3-8 record was last year....

Now that's why I come to this forum! Where did you dig up that stat? I also seem to recall that the offense was particularly bad in first quarters, but I don't know if stats would back that up. In addition, I wonder what the point differential was on special teams last season. I hadn't really considered that aspect of the team until now, but maybe Reggie Jones can help our scoring in that department.

The 2007 stats are available on goviks.com. Here are the numbers for scoring by quarter:

Not sure what to think about Fetzer. I'd love to see him out there, but it certainly isn't worth being in pain for the rest of his days. :-\

Agreed, Marty. Sounds like an old injury liable to turn chronic for the rest of his life. Not worth it. On another note, it's nice to see the O line shape up. We won't see the long run of sacks we saw last year, one hopes. Now for the D line and backfield. I see Montana's going through a lot of the same problems we've got, with lots of freshmen and transfers. We may end up tied with them for fourth at the end of the season. :-)

Well, I finally made it out to a practice session today... A few comments.

I can't believe that punting will be the first thing that I bring up, but watching Urrego punt is great. Nearly every punt is 50 - 60 yards in the air with good hang time. There was a lot of special teams work going on, and I know it's not 100% live, but our outside guys on kickoff coverage are getting down field in a hurry. Given the hang time that Urrego will provide, I think we'll see a vast improvement in our net punting, which was down near the bottom of the conference last season. Don't get me wrong, Urrego had a great punting season last year, but our net punting stunk due to our return yards that we gave up. Jones and D'Ambrosio looked good returning kicks. Jones is very fast, and It won't surprise me one bit to hear Mr Hewitt shout out "to the 20, to the 10, to the house" on his broadcast at some point this season.

Hagen had the majority (if not all) of the snaps during the live scrimmage and didn't look so hot. The wind had picked up a little bit, but his throws didn't look tight at all. There was a good run that looked to be off tackle that hit for about 10 yards, and another long run on an option, but that outside option run would have gone for a loss if the QB wasn't off limits to hit. All in all, the live defense was further along than the live offense today.

In watching the 1st string offense do their reps, I think they looked good. Howland had some good throws, with the exception of what looked to be a fairly deep out pattern where he put the ball into the turf in front of an open receiver. Quite a few option plays were worked on and the pitches to Bobby looked good with the exception of one that Kavanaugh threw too low. With Bobby running the option I can say this. If the DE bites on the QB, and the linebacker gets blocked, I really, really feel sorry for the poor corners of the Big Sky that may have to try to make an open field tackle on Bobby. He's a beast, and you can bet that he won't be looking to juke. Dump truck, meet Vespa scooter. ;-)

The first string defense looks good. Jones was working more on offense and returns today, so he wasn't taking reps at corner. I'm not sure who that was on the right side, as there wasn't a name on the jersey, and I'm not sure if the numbers were correct. Maybe Colin Williams? He seemed pretty tall. McCrae, Schantz, and the Pedersens are going to be fun to watch. I can't wait for the Western game to see them hit. This unit is seems so much further ahead in the 3-4 system than our group was last year. I hope we have a couple of blowouts so that the younger 2 deep guys get some downs early in the year. That'll really help ensure that we have the depth going into conference play.

Brown wasn't in pads, but was doing conditioning during practice. If that knee and hammy heal up, he should have a good season. He's looking stronger than last year and looks to be in great shape. We need some good Viking karma to keep him healthy and on the field this year.

It still feels like summer with the heat wave this week, but I can smell a hint of football in the air. :-)

Only One Direction To Go

This is the first I've heard of Jim Beseda's running diary of each day of practice. Where was Ian to clue us in to that one? (Not your job, Ian, I know, but you've spoiled us and now we have crazy expectations.)

I will say this, the coverage of fall camp is pretty darned good between Beseda and Nathan's blog. Not sure I like what I'm hearing, but great coverage.

My optimism of last week is now gone. I was really expecting more from the defense in a game type scenario.
