Preseason camp

i went to practice yesterday and from what i seemed the outside receivers still need a lot of work in the Run and Shoot scheme. Hopefully releasing Matt and Marcel (Two outside receivers) was best for the program because from what i saw this offense could have at least used the experience to get the ball rolling a little bit.

I will say this, the coverage of fall camp is pretty darned good between Beseda and Nathan's blog. Not sure I like what I'm hearing, but great coverage.

My optimism of last week is now gone. I was really expecting more from the defense in a game type scenario.

Reading Beseda's updates and Nathan's updates have got me frightened. Seems like we are struggling and don't have enough time to get things figured out before the start of the season. When Mouse says that we're missing assignments and are not executing, I get very nervous.

We heard pretty much all positive up until yesterday from Nathan and Jim. Yesterday's report was what I'd expect from a team with a lot of freshmen. How will they react to Glanville's tongue-lashing? That's the question. Pull themselves together, try harder? Or sullenly mope? That will say a lot about where we're going this year.

At least they have the extra week early. If they can do enough to overcome WOU, which shouldn't be too much of a problem, they have until Sept. 13 to be ready.

Breaking in players to the 4-3 (three linesmen) scheme is one of our challenges this year. I notice that the Southern Illinois Salujis are doing the same thing. I wonder how many other FCS teams are making the move or are already playing 4-3? This may not be such an innovation after all.

Isn't it actually called the 3-4 (3 down, 4 lb), rather than the 4-3 (4 down, 3 lb)?

Not sure about all of FCS programs, but UNC, NAU, and PSU are the only three listed in the Big Sky as running the 3-4. I wouldn't call the 3-4 an innovation since many pro teams and major D1 programs run it. I sort of consider it like the differences between driving in England and driving in the US. Both work, but the concept is waaaaaaaaay different. ;-)

Did anybody else hear the interview with Andy Schantz on 95.5 The Game last night? Nothing earth shattering but good to get some primetime exposure on the local airwaves. Kenny Vance was pretty good about encouraging casual sports fans to go to the WOU game and give the Viks a chance.

I missed it.

I see The Fan has had their typical terrible coverage of PSU football thus far...

I like the talk of NFL scouts looking at Schantz and Jones.

Pretty funny bit.

Looks like Manupuna will probably get the start at nose, with Jacobs right behind. With Talakai (I thought I'd heard some good things about him earlier in camp) in the mix, we look pretty good at that spot.

That's not good to hear that the two deep LBs are not getting it done.

I see that Jackson is listed as backup for Jones, with Shead getting the start on the other side.

Shead looked in the spring game, and was reported as playing really well in camp, but wow, getting the other starting job over the senior who led the team in interceptions last season? Jackson will probably share reps with Jones when he goes to the offensive side of the ball, but I can't help but like our depth at the CB spot. Also, when was the last time that we started two corners that were over 6'? This may be a senior Jackson/Dixson type year for us at corner. :-)

I really like our talent and depth at the linebacker and defensive back positions. The line may still be a little weaker, but our defense gives me hope. Something tells me we'll have one of those years where we give up lots of yards, but not necessarily alot of points.

I am optimistic about the team as a whole. You always hear that teams struggle the first year with a new system, and the Vikings certainly displayed that last year. However, given the rave reviews about a number of defensive positions, and the obvious strides the offense has made just from increased knowledge of the run & shoot, I see myself expecting (not just hoping for) more than 3 wins. How is this going to translate on the field? I can't wait until Saturday to find out.

Will the receivers, defensive backs make an impact for Jerry Glanville's team?
