Program Put On Probation

Well, this won't help the program rebuild. It's related to the players suspended last season, so not a huge surprise. What really hurts is the loss of 9 scholarships. I feel terrible for Jay Hill as he had nothing to do with this and apparently knew nothing about it when he took the job.

Penalties and corrective measures include:

Public reprimand and censure.

Three years of probation from November 19, 2014 through November 18, 2017.

A fine of $5,000 plus two percent of the school’s football program operating budget.

A reduction of 9 football equivalency scholarships.

I can see penalties levied against the university, and against anybody involved in the incident. However, I have a real problem when the NCAA punishes kids and coaches who had nothing to do with the violations in the first place. Yet, that is what the NCAA always does. They find a way to punish the innocent along with the guilty. The scholarship reduction is the most egregious of all. That will only stand to punish some high school kids who, absolutely, had nothing to do with any infraction.

Way to go NCAA!

Don't know why the NCAA can't just punish the players involved by taking their scholarships, instead of punishing the entire program, especially by taking four more scholarships than the number involved. Doesn't seem fair to the other student-athletes in the program who don't cheat.

Instead of taking 2% of the football budget, why didn't they take 2% of the Math Departments budget? If there was a coach involved, Why didn't they take 2% of his salary? If the Athletics Departments oversight was not found at fault (they self reported the incident), Why were they fined?

The people on that board are highly educated and probably quite intelligent. Although, it doesn't show in their dispensation. :twocents:

Slightly off topic, but when does Bovee start to feel the heat for the current condition of the athletics department? I know this probation isn't his fault, but it did happen on his watch. His volleyball hire just resigned after four terrible years. His women's basketball coach hire shouldn't be far behind from resigning, or being fired. Most programs are finishing in the bottom half of the conference, and some would say it's crown jewel program, the men's basketball program, is underachieving. The physical facilities have been improved during his tenure, but all these improvements haven't lead to better programs yet.

YIKES!! Ouch that hurts. Well, a great basketball coach once said, "The NCAA is so mad at North Carolina (put any Big 5 program's name in here) and it's cheating that they are penalizing Cleveland State for it." THE NCAA is a Paper Tiger, the absolute definition of hypocrisy and an affront to anything associated with honesty and integrity. It is suppose to regulate and support sportsmanship, fair play, integrity, and academia but only cares about the pot of gold found at the bottom of the Big 5 rainbow.

What happened to North Carolina and their academic issues? Far worse than us, and nothing happened. Or Florida State? YIkes a school that allows a QB who is a rapist to play football. Or Memphis and Kentucky where a coach has done just about anything to keep his athletes playing, even paying students to take test for them, but no violations there. Hell, the list goes on and on and on and on...yet, only the schools who are poor and at a lower division are actually ever punished. If it was the same everywhere, then we would have no place to complain, but it isn't and so we have every right to bitch and moan. HYPOCRISY at its most inane.

What is the NCAA planning on doing with the money they are taking away from Weber State? Please tell me it will go into some type of fund that will support education not to help build Mark Emmerts new house.

I hope the scholarships are 3 for each year the school is on probation, and can be used accordingly. Oh, did Hill really not know? I'm pretty sure he was made aware of the issue, but that, since the school already punished the offending players and instructor that the NCAA wouldn't slap the Cats so hard.

3 years of probation, does that include post season sanctions (assuming that Hill can right the ship)?
I've heard it doesn't since it didn't happen while Hill was head coach.

Do you know if it is 9 scholarships a year or just 9 overall over a certain period. If it is 9 a year, WEBER is totally SCREWED.

Not sure. They are "9 football equivalency scholarships." And I'm not exactly sure what that means.

Don't know how accurate it is, but Garside tweeted that Hill did not know.

What is 2% of $65.27?

Seriously though, 9 scholarships whether it's 3 a year for 3 years (which is my guess) or not is quite a hit for an FCS program. It will be interesting to see what sanctions, if any, come down on North Carolina for 47% of their total student athletes allegedly being academically dishonest for several years. I totally agree that Weber deserved some type of punishment, I just wish there was some consistency in what the NCAA did.

Florida State's academic fraud was far more reaching, involved more players, they did not self-report, but they lost only one scholarship for it. Weber State's punishment is far worse.

Agree and dis-agree. FSU lost quite a bit too but WSU's is pretty harsh.

The N.C.A.A. has ruled that Florida State was guilty of major violations in a widespread academic fraud case uncovered in 2007. It announced Friday that it would strip scholarships from 10 Seminole teams and force them to vacate all of the victories in 2006 and 2007 in which the implicated athletes participated. In addition, the college was placed on probation for four years.

It could affect the football coach Bobby Bowden’s race with Penn State’s Joe Paterno for most victories by a major college coach. Bowden’s total of 382 could be reduced by as many as 14. Paterno has 383.

The scandal involved 61 athletes, and although the N.C.A.A. did not name them, Florida State barred 23 football players from the 2007 Music City Bowl after the fraud was uncovered. The football and men’s basketball teams will each lose one scholarship the next two years, and similar penalties were given to women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s track, baseball, softball and men’s golf.

FSU also vacated the 2007 national championship it won in men's track.

North Carolina will get a slap on the wrist. Crap that Weber gets kicked in the stomach and the "big boys" get a stern warning. Coach had to have known. No way Jerry doesn't tell the football coach that there are potential NCAA issues. Maybe Jerry only told him enough to introduce the issue to Coach so that he couldn't be held accountable. Holding back on information to keep Hill safe and his players protected?
