In light of recent developments....IS ANYBODY CONSIDERING A TRIP TO BAYLOR? I don't want to be the lone PSU alum there, but if so I might even make the local news.

To bad Marty, I would love to return the favor for the tailgate you invited me to. On Saturday PSU travels to Houston to play Texas Southern. Granted the team is 0-11, was thrashed soundly by the likes of Texas, Marquette, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Washington, Air Force and Gonzaga, They should not be a threat to us, but we better not be looking past them to Baylor. I would hate for PSU to be their first season's win because they weren't taken seriously.

My worry exactly, Casey. I think Bone has trained them well enough to take one game at a time, but you never know. We've got to be solid and methodical from here on in, regardless of the opponent.

First, the Texas Southern game is their home-opener!
We are the only non-SWAC opponent scheduled to play in their gym.

Second, the Baylor game can be seen online through CBS College Sports All-Access.
Should we have a viewing party? Maybe at the Cheerful Bullpen near PGE?

You make a good case and because I live in Texas I could go to one or the other, but not both. Now my wife would prefer going to Texas Southern in Houston because tickets would be cheaper, a pretty much assured win, Houston has a great Chinatown and because it is a Saturday we could spend all day there and not rush back.

Baylor on the other hand is an elite university, with an outstanding team which would give us an accurate yardstick as to our abilities, Waco is closer than Houston and the game promises to be intense. But it is on a work night and even though I am getting off work early Monday, I will still have to be in Tuesday at the regular time so it might be a long night.

Which one would you guys choose? Let me know by Friday and I will make that game, take lots of pictures and post them on my face book and my space pages with comentaries.

I've thought about it and the lure of a over-nighter, shopping and eating in Chinatown, a hope opener in Houston and an entire day to return home has won out over leaving work early, trying to make a cannonball run to Waco and try to make it back in time to get some rest for work the next day.

I'm curious to see what type of a lineup Baylor throws at us to start the game. It looks like they have the ability go big or go with a three guard rotation like they did against Wazzu.

In my opinion, Jones plays bigger than 6'7, but the Big Sky ain't the Big 12, and Baylor could just try to muscle us and put us in a position where we need to be hot from the outside to stay in this game. On the flip side, they may just want to match up on the guard positions and try to match our skill positions.

This is one of those games where having Visockis available would be nice.

#21 Baylor vs. Portland State

http://www.wacotrib.com/baylor/content/sports/college/2008/12/29/12292008wacbumen.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=17

Tipoff: 7 p.m., Ferrell Center

Radio: 6:30 p.m., KRZI-AM (1660)

Records: BU 10-1, PS 10-3

Series: First meeting

Scouting Portland State: The Vikings made national headlines when they knocked off No. 7 Gonzaga, 77-70, Tuesday night in Spokane, Wash. Senior guard Jeremiah Dominguez buried seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points as Portland State won its first game over a Top 25 team after 11 straight losses. Dominguez was named Big Sky Conference player of the year last season after averaging 14.2 points and setting a conference record with 84 treys. Portland State won the Big Sky and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Vikings are coming off a 63-55 win over Texas Southern Saturday in Houston.

Busy Baylor: After playing just three games in the last three weeks, the Bears will play three games in the next five days. Following tonight’s game against Portland State, Baylor will host Jackson State at 4 p.m. Wednesday and South Carolina at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the nonconference finale. The Bears haven’t played since pulling off a 74-59 win over Hartford on Dec. 22 as Curtis Jerrells collected 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to record Baylor’s first triple-double since Brian Skinner in 1997.

Next in 1,000-point club: Senior forward Kevin Rogers needs just one point to become the third member of this Baylor squad to record 1,000 career points. Jerrells has scored 1,374 points, while Henry Dugat has collected 1,007 after scoring 16 points against Hartford.

Portland St.-Baylor Preview

Baylor's next non-conference game is not just any average tune-up. It's against arguably one of the best mid-major teams in the country.

For Monday's game at the Ferrell Center, the 21st-ranked Bears (10-1) welcome Portland State, which has already knocked off one ranked team in the past week.

The Vikings (10-3) beat No. 7 Gonzaga 77-70 on Tuesday and ride a three-game winning streak into Waco. Baylor, meanwhile, has won four in a row but has endured a pair of tight games in its last two.

In their last game last Monday, the Bears won 74-59 over Hartford, but allowed the Hawks to get within five with 4:27 left, before pulling away. They also trailed Texas-Arlington by two with 1:11 remaining on Dec. 20 until Curtis Jerrells bailed them out with three free throws and a pivotal steal in a 79-76 victory.

Jerrells, the Bears' leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, scored a season-high 29 in that game, then had one of his biggest career nights against Hartford. The senior guard recorded his first career triple-double and fourth in school history with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Jerrells is one of five players in double figures for one of the nation's best offenses, which has averaged 81.2 points. LaceDarius Dunn has made a team-leading 35 3-pointers and scored 15.9 points per game off the bench, while Henry Dugat, who passed the 1,000-point mark against Hartford, has averaged 13.3 points.

"I think it's an accomplishment to be part of that," Dugat said. "Not too many people who come through here get in that club. I'm grateful for it."

Kevin Rogers, the team's leading rebounder at 7.1 per game, could join Dugat in that club. He has 999 points coming into Monday and could become the school's 22nd player to reach that plateau.

Portland State is playing the middle contest of a five-game road trip.

After beating Gonzaga, the Vikings also survived a scare in their last game Saturday at Texas Southern. The Tigers tied the game at 55 with 2:10 remaining before Portland State scored eight unanswered points for a 63-55 win.

Last season, the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference and earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, losing in the first round to eventual national champion Kansas. They returned three starters from that team, including leading scorer and Big Sky MVP Jeremiah Dominguez.

The senior guard, who averages a team-best 13.5 points, scored a season-high 25 against Gonzaga and is one of five players scoring in double figures, three of whom are transfers who sat out last season.

Phil Nelson, a Washington transfer, has scored 11.8 points per game, and junior guard Dominic Waters, who came to Portland State from Hawaii, has averaged 11.1 points. Jamie Jones transferred from Portland and has averaged 10.5 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds.

Portland State's three losses have come by a combined 10 points.

The two schools have never met, but Baylor has a 9-1 record over Big Sky opponents.

"The win over the Bulldogs already is resonating with recruits, including at least one player from another prominent Division I program who contacted the Vikings on Tuesday night, indicating his intent to transfer to PSU."

This is great news. I wonder who it is.

Casey, Sorry to hear you won't be coming to Waco. Looking forward to watching the Dominquez kid in person, he sounds like a real player.

I am too. Since the TSU game was free I tried to talk the wife into another trip, but she set her foot down and said no. I'll see if CBS has the game online unless it is on cable here in the San Antonio area.

JD is a great player for his size. The TSU fans were much suprpised as to how quick and accurate he was. At the end they were sreaming at thier team to try to keep the ball away from him. He got one of his shots blocked, but it was a rainbow three attempt that just seemed to hang in the air. My wife says JD will be in the NBA real soon.

Here is the link from the Houston paper on PSU/Baylor. it has the same AP story as above but also has a team breakdowns.
