QB competition

After today's scrimmage I'd guess Kraght will be the starting QB. Too much experience to ignore. Will Jilani get the call for backup? He looked better than Alexander today. Or do we redshirt him?

A nice problem to have (so many good QBs) and a some big decisions to be made in the next few days!

Am curious what happened with Cade Smith. Maybe he just joined the team too late to pick things up for this year, but am surprised he wasn't in the top three given his pedigree. Is a good sign for Eason though

Smith didn't play in the first scrimmage either. You're probably right, he hasn't had time to get the system down.

As for Jalani, if he isn't the starter I vote to.redshirt him. Looks to be quite the talent and a future star for Portland State!!!

For me, I just think we are going to be scary good next season. That is why I'd like to see one of the young QBs play this year. For as good as I think we may be next year, I don't want to bring in someone who hasn't played much (if any) this year. I'd like to get their feet wet this year.

I thought that he did play in the first scrimmage.

"At quarterback, Kraght played two series, Davis Alexander and Cade Smith each had three series, while Eason, Scott Hitner and Davis Koetter each had one series."

Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum has named true freshman Jalani Eason as Viks' starting QB, ahead of senior Josh Kraght

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty excited about this decision. While I believe Josh would have handled the position really well, especially given his experience and maturity level, having someone at the Freshman level with the skill sets that Jalani possesses will absolutely pay dividends for the future of this team.

Nearly all the successful Big Sky programs have had QBs that grew with their programs. Continually bringing in JUCO transfers or elevating from the current roster with just a year or two of eligibility left means never really having the continuity necessary. Can't wait for Saturday to see this team compete.

So Eason got the job. Should be an interesting season. A true freshman, no less. No collegiate experience, but judging by his scrimmage work, we should win more than a few games.

Good move for the future but I feel bad for the guys who are seniors. They were all hoping for Josh with his experience and leadership. Eason is seen as a good kid but there are some feeling like we invested in the future at the cost to the present.

We have. In terms of record, I expect this season to be a lot like the last. I hope Eason is brilliant at QB, but it takes most freshmen some time to learn the ropes.

Should be interesting to see how our second true freshman starter does with their first game.

McDonagh was facing Carroll College at home, while Eason will be greeted by 63k fans in Provo at an elevation of 4600' on ESPN.

No pressure there.

I still like the idea of Kraght playing the role that Penn played the last two years. Maybe a bit better as Penn wasn't much of a thrower. Eason can grow and learn the system this year (like I said before, get his feet wet), and Kraght can go back to receiver. I like this choice. :thumb:
