R.I.P. Mens basketball season 2011-2012

Quite a young squad this season and it showed. Quite a bit of talent showed as well so lets hope they learned and grow into next season.

I agree about the youth, the talent level is to be determined. There were a couple flashes... well Svihovec was a pleasant surprise (except at the end of the game last night, for Christ sake hit a effing free throw and they win) beyond that maybe Huskinson has some potential but the 20% of the time he looked good the other 80% of the time he was invisible and yeah a true freshman so I'll keep an open mind.

Otherwise, in my opinion, it's a team of 6th men and role players. I just don't see anyone breaking out and carrying the torch. Our big men are.... how shall I put this... soft... the one guy that is 6'9" and 270 plays like he's 6'3" 200 and the true freshman looked timid and lost. Addo, I've never seen a guy who can't shoot try so many 3 pointers, what was he 1 for 50 on the season? Guy is athletic granted but doesn't exploit that, seems to have a basketball IQ of about 70.

Guards, well thanks for nothing Lloyd... still unsure why he was suspeneded but he's still listed on the roster so I assume he'll be back. Hawk Harrelson, we hardly knew yah, hope you wore a ski mask to pick up your scholarship check because that was highway robbery. Garnica didn't improve much from last year I expected a bigger leap. Unruh some flashes but no consistency and another guy that flat out disappeared for huge stretched of time.

So they are young we'll see if anyone steps up next year but youth is no longer an excuse. Hate to say it Hill but all I can think now is it was all Boyle and that makes me sad to consider. Please, get rid of whatever hang over or sense of entitlement seems to plague this team with laziness and let's get back on track next year.

I know this was harsh but who can't agree this was a very disappointing season and after all it's not intramurals brotha!

Yeah, incredibly disapointing year. I was expecting a drop off but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Maybe the team never recovered from losing to an NAIA team and Sac State. Those two were the worst of the season. I'll give Hill one more year, and if it's this bad, I think we can all agree it was Boyle's working that got this program in the right direction. Maybe he's over his head?

Disappounting ? YES !! The harsh critisicm ?? Not !! I saw some really good thngs with Svihovec and Huskison and Unruh. What I have noticed is our big men (Addo, Osborne) get pushed around a lot. I think they could be a force if they got in the weight room and worked on their upper body strength. That also goes for guys like Garnica and Unruh. What does everybody else think of that ??

Will I say that this team didn't meet my personal expectations? Sure. But that doesn't mean that I'm ready to jump off the ledge here. As I mentioned in a previous post, this season did feel like a hangover from last season's wild ride. But it's unfair for me to say that it was like that for the players too. I wasn't in the gym with them all summer and fall fighting blood, sweat and tears. I wasn't in their locker room when they suffered the defeat to an NAIA school or in any of their close losses.

I think our expectations were probably a little too unreasonbly high for this bunch coming in. I think we assumed that since some of these guys were on last year's team, they would pick up where the seniors left off, but we forgot that they are still just (mostly) freshmen and sophomores. I still believe in this program. And if anyone should be called out, maybe it's us, the fans. While I know we didn't have a lot to root for this winter, we need to show better support for these young kids, we have to make Greeley a place where teams walk in to the arena and feel that they are probably not going to win. And again, maybe the hangover played a role for us too, I know I felt it.

In terms of tangible evidence (W's and L's), yeah this was a step back. But intangibly, I don't think the program fell too far back. Honestly, next year's team will be young too and we may not have any seniors on the roster (depending on the status of Lloyd), but I do expect better results. You have to think, although our lineup is going to be dotted with sophomores and juniors, these guys have been on the court enough to the point where they are wise beyond their years/elgibility.

I think it was John Wooden who once said something along the lines of "you have to feel the pain of defeat before you can be a champion." I think this rings true for these guys. A lot of these players were here for the peaks, and they didn't have to go through the valleys like the last graduating seniors had to go through. Hopefully, this is their valley. You can tell a lot about a man's character about how he approaches things once he gets hit in the mouth with disappointment and defeat, and that is why I am looking forward to seeing how they respond when next November rolls around.

Go Bears!
Out.

Not to cherry pick, but Addo was actually 16/35 on the year, 46% from downtown which is actually pretty darn good (as a team UNC shot 45% which was #1 in the nation).

Honestly, as a neutral observer, I think a lot of people had way too high of expectations for UNC this year. Before the season began I picked them 6th or 7th (can't remember), and had fans commenting on the site about how wrong I was, and how they were a top 3 team easy. They had one senior and two juniors (who wound up not even finishing the year), and returned one starter from last year. They were one of the youngest teams in the country.

Think it's a little unfair to think Hill doesn't have it because after losing almost everyone from a conference champion team (in his first year), they took a big step back. That's to be expected. The fact is they are set up really nicely for next year, and especially the year after that. With one more big on the roster (and if Keane can develop), they look like a potential top 3 team next year and might be the favorites the year after that.

If you had visions of a repeat or top 3, then yes, very disappointing year. However I think most neutral observers saw this year as a time when a lot of young guys would get a ton of time to develop, and there would be lots of growing pains, which is exactly what happened. They will be fine, in my opinion.
