Racism is a problem in UNC football program

Thetruth

Member
Hi,
I am a former bear football player, & I feel the need today to
Post not to belittle or bring anyone down but to reveal a truth
Through my experience of playing for the current head coach
At unc. When I initially was signed to unc under downing, I
Received ample playing time as a freshman. Then as soon as
Collins came, I worked even harder by even doubling up on another
Sport to benefit me for football. I wondered why I never played even
Though I had my ideas as to a reason. I since transferred to another
College and I don't play anymore due to particular injuries I sustained.
I'm not out to get anyone but i tell the truth. After I left unc program &
Free school to go to another school because of the treatment I received,
I was told by a man from my hometown , who donates huge amounts of money
To unc football, that the head coach said point blank at a lunch he had with him that only 'black'
Players will play at the db position no matter what anyone else does. Now is this
My word against anyone else's? Sure . But what's not a joke is there is something very
Wrong with the way coaches do things here in my opinion. When I was a player under
These coaches I was ridiculed in meetings and picked on by coaches because I look like
I came from a broken home. Again, I don't make this post out of hatred, because the things I
Went through in my playing career made me strong and resilient, but I think treating your players like old trash and Definite racism is a terrible way to run a football team that everyone considers to be division
1. I just had to make this post because I simply can't hold my tongue anymore. To me I don't
Think anyone who is an outright racist should be allowed to run any high level football team
Where young men's futures are on the line, and where race plays a large factor in whether or not
You will get equal treatment depending on which position you play. Again, this is not to belittle . It's
Only truth . I just feel bad for current players who will get the same horrendous treatment as I did because it's
A real shame for a person to have to leave behind a free college education because of the way you are treated for the way God created you.
Thanks for taking the time to read .

Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't all of our QB's this past season white? The only claim you made about racism is that someone "who donates huge amounts of money To unc football, that the head coach said point blank at a lunch he had with him that only 'black'Players will play at the db position no matter what anyone else does" is either ridiculously false or coach Collins had the biggest change of heart about how he feels about white QB's in the history of coaching. You are making a very serious claim of racism that needs to be backed up with more evidence in my opinion.

It does disturb me that you (or anyone for that matter) would be made fun of based on things out of their control (like where they come from). How this fits in with the locker room culture/behavior at other schools is unknown to me since I have never been in that environment.

I'm speaking for my experience not the previous season. And I'm talking about skill positions
Not quarterback. This is truth i don't make up my experience I had at UNC.

& I don't post the mans name who told me this bc I
Haven't asked for his permission to do so. He is from my
Hometown extremely wealthy donated huge amounts of $
In the past & I'll leave it at that.

& im speaking from 2011 & 2012 not any other years . And yes those years all our
Dbs were only one particular ethnicity. So you can't tell me I'm wrong because I
Lived those years as a member of the team and this is 100% fact

Sorry, I misread your original post (I read it as QB not DB). You (or the big donor) are still wrong in that coach Collins has played white defensive backs. Maybe not in 2011/2012 but since then he has. It's also a position that traditionally has had more black athletes playing that position than white. That doesn't make every coach a racist. It's one donor's word that doesn't line up with reality. Now that doesn't mean that coach Collins is not a racist, I just would not use that as my argument.

This sounds like the claims of a player who feels like he was slighted because he got playing time under Downing and not Collins. Maybe the DBs Collins played instead of Thetruth were just better. Maybe claiming racism is easier than admitting that someone else took his spot. Not taking anything away from Thetruth and his football skills, but players lose there positions every off-season to better players, at UNC and at every program in the country. Its part of the game. By the way, if I'm not mistaken, the Bears started two white DBs last season, both at safety.

I'm not here to argue. Point is coach treats his players like dirt & is 15 -41 in all his time in UNC.
Not going to respond past this I'm just stating facts from my experience

Yeah, not much to argue with this last post. It seems to take an awful lot to get the sack at UNC.

Not quite sure what brought me to the forums, but I stumbled on this and thought I would help clear things up a little bit. There is no racism issues with the coaching staff at UNC. I also am a past player, and played during the same time that "thetruth" played. And based on the info given I am fully aware of who he is. I am not and was not a huge fan of collins myself, but he is not racist. Though you may have gotten playing time as a freshman with downing, it was at a completely different position. I mean NO disrespect with the following statements. In my opinion (and clearly the new coaches too) the better RBs got playing time and the spots, once you moved to db, the better players got those spots also. At one point I remember sitting in a team meeting and the current D coordinator asked you why you didnt want to play safety, because we already had so many corners so everyone regardless of color got their chance... the tough reality is that different coaches run different teams and have different needs, as far as our DBs went, we had the better ones out there that we needed and they happened to be black. Cant speak to what your friend told you, quite frankly I wasnt there. But until a player out performed the kids that were at the current positions, regardless of race.. its a moot point, nobody did and so the current DBs that played, continued to play....

I know you were fast, and not saying you weren't skilled, because honestly you went on to play for another school. But I think there are bigger issues at hand outside of race, that led to your decline in playing time vs downing. And as for the meetings and you being ridiculed- besides normal jabbing that team mates do to each other, the reason people would give you a hard time was not because you came from a broken home (not sure if thats even the case) but because of how you acted, started to talk, stuff you did to your hair... if you had always been that dude, people would have seen you as "that dude" but it was drastic changes from semester to semester. little goofy things like that- and even that was mild. if you walked into a LB meeting, you would see that the Lb coach dished it out a lot more harsh (joking most the time... i think :? ) and also similar things towards the LBs .... football is a tough game, physically and mentally... so you gotta be tough physically AND mentally but to call someone out as a racist, I cant co sign on that, and im not even a collins fan. -

UNCoach, thanks for taking the time to register and provide a polite reply to an impassioned post.
