Recruiting For Next Year

Ian Ruder and OregonPreps.com are speculating that a different "big" has signed:
http://blog.oregonlive.com/portlandstatevikings/2008/05/viks_land_a_big.html

Not a bad guy to add. He was essential to letting Conrad redshirt, so even if he doesn't produce, he's helping the program.

If this is the case, this is a great pickup. Provides short term size until Conrad is ready.

Any idea on who the DI transfers are that got away?

Adding a big is, well, big. Lack of depth in the post is the only real weakness on next year's team. I'd like to learn more about this young man's skill set to know exactly how he'll help us. Does he fit the euro stereotype of slim big men who shoot from outside, or will he help with rebounding and shot blocking?

Ian Ruder said the Vikings showed some intrest in ChristianPolk from ASU who ended up at UTEP.

Future Viking?

That's great that a local kid(s) are looking at the PSU program. I can't help but think that this wouldn't bet the case if we hadn't had the ncaa tourney run and local/national media exposure.

Ken Bone Signs Another Basketball Player For The Coming Year

Hey, I noticed at the bottom of the goviks.com press release that there is a freshman guard, Glen Dean, signed out of high school in Seattle during the fall signing period. Was I asleep and missed this announcement, or did the Viks not announce it?

Or did forestgreen (the Viks' media/press release agent) and Ian Ruder miss this one? ;)

What can you guys tell me about this signing and this player?

It was in December and was sort of 2nd page behind Conrad...

I think the Griz were pretty heavy on this guy too... Season sweep of the Griz, taking their recruits. Good times! :-)

Thanks, Marty. I remember it now. I guess when I read the part about attending prep. school, I kind of forgot about him for next year. That would also mean his scholarship for next year is still available, so he's not really signed for this coming season??

This is a post from egriz concerning Glen Dean:

"Glen Dean is 5-10 speedster point guard from Roosevelt High School in Seattle Washington has been offered by the Griz, and is heavily leaning towards the Griz over Montana State, UC Santa Barbara, Portland State, Pacific, and Seattle U (moving to D-1). He is rated any where from the #2 to #6 senior point Guard in Washington. Tinkle was the very first college coach (starting when Tinkle was only an assistant at UM) to recruit him and he likes Tinkle a lot. He has said he will not commit to any school until after he has visited that school. I understand that Montana is one of his first schedule visits. Unless something goes wrong, I would expect him to commit on his visit to UM.

On a related note the Griz are also recruit 6-2 Sean Stockton out of Spokane Wa. at the point. Like Dean Stockton is rated any where from 2nd to 6th in the state at that position. The difference between the two has more to do with the flavor of point guard you like. Dean is more of a speedster water-bug, penetrator while Stockton is a bigger stronger shooter."

Of course, this poster was incorrect that Dean would chose the griz, but it will be a few years before we see him play at the Stott. Also, if I'm the Viks' media/press release agent, I would like a raise. Go Viks!

Thanks for the info. Excellent work. I'm not sure if the job pays all that much. I know the assistant coaching jobs don't !!

In today's Tribune:

• Portland State has added two players in recent weeks, out of the junior college ranks by way of a Division I school and Europe.

This week, it was 6-10 post Donatas Visockis from Butte College (Oroville, Calif.). Originally from Lithuania, he attended high school in the U.S. and then went to Southern Mississippi before transferring to Butte.

Paul Guede, 6-5, who is from England and played at Valparaiso University (Ind.) and Tallahassee (Fla.) CC, also signed. Both “will help us with depth,” PSU coach Ken Bone says.

“I don’t know if either one will start, but they will contribute,” Bone says. “They’re good players and physically ready.”

His guess is Guede will play more because of his ability to guard athletic wings. Visockis gives the team presence on both ends, Bone says.

The Vikings pursued Visockis and closed the deal after Alex Tiefenthaler informed coaches that he would be transferring to Concordia, an NAIA school. Two seasons ago, Tiefenthaler transferred from the University of Portland to PSU. “I didn’t ask him to leave,” Bone says.

The move left the Vikings with Jamie Jones, who had ankle surgery, as the team’s only true center before the signing of Visockis. It remains to be seen whether 6-10 Jason Conrad, a prep from Gilroy, Calif., can help the Vikings next season.

Another high school signee, guard Glen Dean of Seattle, plans to attend prep school and then presumably re-sign with the Vikings. Bone still has two scholarships to use for the 2008-09 school year.

• Wilson standout Mario Gill remains undecided on a college. Portland State has asked the 6-1 guard to walk on next season, and he has a lot of junior college offers, including one from Midland (Texas) College.

Gill was a first team all-state player and was voted PIL 6A player of the year.

A great pick up for a walk-on if it happens. Here's his profile:

It's great to hear about the off season conditioning. Last season we were stronger than the prior season, and to hear that we're ahead of where we were last year.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Tapscott to play for Clackamas CC
Former Century star aims for Division-I future

http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=122601056093027200

Chehales Tapscott, a Class 5A all-state player from Century High, has chosen to play this season for Clackamas Community College.

Tapscott, 6-5 and 205 pounds, averaged 22.8 points per game as a prep senior.

“I really needed to get my academics together before I went to a D-1,” Tapscott says. “Clackamas has a great reputation, and we had had some other Century players go here and really speak highly of Coach (Clif) Wegner and his program here. I was also excited about the up-tempo style of basketball they play; it really looked like a lot of fun.”

Wegner says he feels Tapscott is a D-I-caliber player.

“I think he is probably the most highly recruited kid we have ever signed,” Wegner says

According to CCC, Portland State coach Ken Bone has a scholarship waiting for Tapscott when he completes his associate’s degree at Clackamas.

“Chehales has a great deal of physical talent and athleticism," Wegner says. "We feel that if he really drives himself, he can be a very high-caliber Division-I player and (have) a great shot to play professionally after that.”

Profile of the new basketball commit. I'm assuming this means Dean hasn't gotten together his academics, or some decision by Visockis.
