Recruiting For Next Year

Profile of the new basketball commit. I'm assuming this means Dean hasn't gotten together his academics, or some decision by Visockis.

Where did you hear of this commit?

Thanks to a trusted source, I can confirm that Dean will not play at PSU in the future, as he has been granted a release. However, it must be stressed that this has nothing to do with academics, and more to do with slowplaying a recruit who was ready and willing to suit up. I hope you will all join me in wishing Glen luck in his quest to become a D-1 player in the future.

Vikings get a commitment from JC point guard

North Idaho's Melvin Jones is all set to transfer to Portland State next season, which should help add to the Vikings' depth at point guard and help replace some of the firepower the team will be losing when Jeremiah Dominguez graduates.

Jones, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Seattle's Chief Sealth High School, was averaging 11.0 points and 4.6 assists through eight games for the Cardinals, who are currently 17-0 and ranked No. 16 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll.

How good is Jones? Well, there is a brief on North Idaho's website about the 16th-ranked Cardinals' recent 72-62 victory over College of Eastern Utah that reads: "With 3:10 left in the game, Melvin Jones hit a baseline three and then sotle the ball and three down a dunk to put the game away."

That's a little Dominguez-like, eh?

The Vikings can't comment on recruits at this time, but it seems that they probably will look for Jones to come in and play backup minutes behind Dominic Waters, the heir apparent to Dominguez as the team's starting point guard next season.

*Nathan Lozeau: The 2007 Marysville-Pilchuck graduate was a member of the University of San Diego men’s basketball until about a month ago, when he decided to leave. I talked to Lozeau on the phone yesterday and he said he plans to transfer to Portland State University and play for head coach Ken Bone. Lozeau, a 6-foot-10 center, averaged 7.7 minutes per game in six appearances this season for San Diego. Lozeau said his main reasons for leaving San Diego were lack of playing time and feeling homesick.

Lozeau will offer some much-needed size. Will he be eligible halfway through the year a la Tief?

He has size alright! I think you're right...he'll be eligible about halfway. I wonder if they'll redshirt him if Donatas makes the roster?

Today is signing day, right? Any news so far? I'd love to get confirmation of Geving's statements about keeping the recruits.

"Phillip is a big, strong kid who gives us another inside post presence that we really need," said Geving. "He is a good post-up player and has a back-to-the-basket game."

This sounds like exactly what we need.
