North Idaho's Melvin Jones is all set to transfer to Portland State next season, which should help add to the Vikings' depth at point guard and help replace some of the firepower the team will be losing when Jeremiah Dominguez graduates.
Jones, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Seattle's Chief Sealth High School, was averaging 11.0 points and 4.6 assists through eight games for the Cardinals, who are currently 17-0 and ranked No. 16 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll.
How good is Jones? Well, there is a brief on North Idaho's website about the 16th-ranked Cardinals' recent 72-62 victory over College of Eastern Utah that reads: "With 3:10 left in the game, Melvin Jones hit a baseline three and then sotle the ball and three down a dunk to put the game away."
That's a little Dominguez-like, eh?
The Vikings can't comment on recruits at this time, but it seems that they probably will look for Jones to come in and play backup minutes behind Dominic Waters, the heir apparent to Dominguez as the team's starting point guard next season.
