PSU loses a local kid....

After taking his first and only official visit to Northern Arizona two weekends ago, Alex Mott was pretty sure he had found the college program for him. Still, the underrated 6-foot-4, 263-pound offensive lineman from Barlow High School in Gresham decided to stew on any kind of decision for a few days, talking things over with those close to him. After a little time, he picked up the phone and decided what he'd do about the Lumberjack scholarship offer.

"It's all good - I committed to Northern Arizona," Mott said. "I called them up after the visit and they just came over tonight and we talked to them about it. They're really excited to have me there."

In general, it was simply the right fit for Mott. He was impressed with everything that he saw in Flagstaff, and can't wait to get started on his college career. "After going down there, I loved it down there," Mott said. "I liked all the coaches, the team, and the players that I did get to meet."

The plan for Mott is to come in and learn the system for a year before hitting the field in full force. "They've talked about redshirting me and I'll probably play tackle or guard," Mott said. "They said they like how I get off the ball a lot. At Barlow, we were really a running team so they didn't see me do a lot of pass-blocking stuff, but they feel it's something they can work with me with. I just need to get stronger and faster and just better all-around."

OregonPreps.com would like to congratulate Mott and his family on his decision.

Although he had an offer in hand from one school that he really liked, Adam Kleffner wanted to take at least one more visit to fully investigate all of his options. So this past weekend, the strong 6-foot-2, 303-pound offensive center from Jesuit High School in Portland boarded a flight for Flagstaff, Arizona where he got a chance to check out Northern Arizona and what it had to offer. As it turns out, it was a lot.

Adam Kleffner will choose between PSU and NAU
"I had a good time down there," Kleffner said. "My flight got delayed for a day so I didn't get there until Saturday, but once I got there I hung out with some of the players and I got a tour of the stadium. The location there is really nice - it's like Bend, Oregon where there's a lot of snow on the ground. It was pretty cool."

Even cooler for Kleffner was the fact he heard some magic words during the trip. "They offered me while I was down there," Kleffner said. "The coach called me into his office and said that they were going to offer me a scholarship, so that was pretty exciting."

The offer from NAU is Kleffner's second, in addition to Portland State who had offered Kleffner during his senior season. The offer also mixes up his recruiting situation. "I'm still weighing things out," Kleffner said. "The academics at both schools are pretty good, and they both have the program that I want. Both want to win a lot and both have said that I'll play pretty quick, like within the next two years."

What it all boils down to is a choice between two up-and-coming Big Sky programs - and it's a decision Kleffner hopes to make in the near future. "It's going to come down to where I feel the more comfortable," he continued. "I'm going to talk with my coach (Monday) and then PSU might come over for a visit (Tuesday) night. I want to decide where I'm going by the beginning of next week."

!!!NEW O-LINE TRANSFER!!!

Welcome your newest Viking Offensive Lineman 6'3'' 300lb guard Sean Lugo. Lugo, a native of Tualatin HS, played a couple seasons at Western Oregon where he became frustrated with the direction of the program and felt a change in scenery might be what he needed. As a sophomore next season, Lugo will provide depth at the guard position and fill future holes left by Brennan Carvalho and Peter St John. Called by his HS coach Craig Hastin as one of the best lineman he has coached, Lugo was initially recruited by Tim Walsh his senior year in hs but Lugo turned down the offer at the time. Sean was also recieving some interest from Oregon at the time but never recieved a scholarship offer. Not only can he ball, but he is an accomplished wrestler and might fill a void at HWT in the future for Portland State. Congratulations to Mr. Lugo and to Portland State!

SIDE NOTE FOR SEAN LUGO

He is already enrolled at PSU and wrestled last semester but quit in order to tune up for football. As a transfer freshman he was beating up on the senior HWT Steve Fittinger in the practice room
and would have wrestled at the upcoming Pac 10 Championships for PSU but made a decision to put on the pounds early for spring ball and quit wrestling.

VIKINGS ADD LINE DEPTH
OregonPreps.com Staff

The Portland State football program has already added two high school standouts on the offensive line in their Class of 2007 recruiting, and recently added a JC transfer to the mix. Clayton Rios, a strong 6-foot-2, 290-pound offensive lineman from Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, has made a pledge to join the Vikings and according to his his head coach, should contribute in the trenches sooner rather than later.

"Clayton probably would have gotten some D-IA offers later on, but he was a mid-year transfer so that had a lot to do with how it all went down," said Allan Hancock head coach Kris Dutra. "Portland State came very highly recommended from me, as their style and our style are similar in that they do a lot of the same things we do. He made a visit up there, liked it, and committed."

Rios had garnered a number of D-II offers and a whole bunch of other schools, namely San Diego State, had also been in contact. But PSU provided him with a tremendous opportunity to come right in and play and the alumnus of Righetti High School in Santa Maria couldn't turn it down.

"I think Portland State did the smart thing in locking him up now, because although he's only 6-foot-2, he's the kind of guy that would have gotten picked up later," Dutra said. "He's very physical - a really strong and aggressive kid; that's his trait. He also moves very fast for a guy that's 290 pounds."

PSU has picked up in-state products Chris Weitzel (Gresham) and Jasper Croome (Lake Oswego) on the offensive line, and is currently working hard to secure the commitments of Adam Kleffner and Michael Lamb of Jesuit.

KLEFFNER MAKES THE CALL

Talk about it in OP Members Forum
Although Adam Kleffner had a strong feel for Portland State after being courted by the Vikings for so long, he wanted to take one more visit in order to have something to compare it to. So the strong, 6-foot-2, 303-pound offensive center from Jesuit High School in Portland went out to see Northern Arizona this past weekend, and found it to his liking. But one day after returning, Kleffner thought hard and decided that home was where he wanted to be.

Adam Kleffner will continue wearing green in college "I committed to Portland State on Monday night," Kleffner said. "The Northern Arizona guys were going to be in town on Wednesday and I didn't want them to come over and waste their time. I just really like the feel there at PSU - the coaches are great and I felt more at home there. So I called up Coach (Eric) Reid, the offensive line coach, and told him, and he called the other coaches who then called me. They were all pretty excited."

While Kleffner had been leaning towards PSU for quite some time, he was quite impressed with what Northern Arizona had to offer. But it all came down to a gut feel of comfort with the Vikings program. There's already a plan mapped out for him when he gets to campus.

"I think what they want me to do is redshirt and be the emergency center, so I'll have the opportunity to travel with the team on road trips," Kleffner said. "Then, my redshirt freshman year I'll battle for the starting job. Once I get to school I'll work on picking up the system - all the X's and O's stuff. This summer, I'll try to get better at everything, especially my speed and strength."

With his commitment, Kleffner joins fellow in-state recruits Jasper Croome (Lake Oswego) and Chris Weizel (Gresham) as verbals on the offensive line. "They're all really excited to have me, Jasper, Chris, and a couple of kids they're getting from Washington," Kleffner said. "It's been a relief for me to get this out of the way."
