Recruiting Thread 2007

I'm not sure that we need yet another QB. I like the guy from WA's physical stats more than I like the guy from Lincoln's, but we have a bunch of young QBs already, not sure we need one more. I guess that's why I'm not a football coach.

Signing day is Feb. 7, and the Vikings have 18 verbal commitments, not including an anticipated transfer in former Jesuit High player Zach Tarver, a receiver, from Oregon State.

Adam Kleffner’s commitment – he picked the Vikings over Northern Arizona – gives PSU five in-state recruits.

PSU might sign another prep quarterback. The Viks are recruiting Drew Hubel, who threw a school-record 28 TDs for Corvallis’ Class 5A championship team, and Evan Mozzochi, a Columbia River High (Vancouver, Wash.) student and son of PSU volleyball coaches Jeff and Marty Mozzochi.

A month ago, Michael Lamb made an official visit to Portland State with a scholarship offer in hand. The developing 6-foot-4, 243-pound offensive lineman from Jesuit High School in Portland liked what he saw, but didn't pull the trigger on a commitment - something he's seen some of the other in-state recruits who were on the same trip do in recent weeks. Instead, he's still weighing out his options and probably won't decide on his future for awhile.

Michael Lamb is now considering some walk-on opportunities in addition to PSU
"I really haven't decided on anywhere yet," Lamb said. "Oregon State has asked me to walk-on, and so has Oregon, and I still have the scholarship offer from Portland State."

As noted, Lamb has had the offer from Portland State for quite some time. He received it prior to his visit to camps in mid-December, and Lamb felt he got most of his questions answered about the football program and the school itself. The walk-on offers from Oregon and Oregon State have come about recently, and in particular the one from the Beavers stands out to him.

"I'm thinking about it," Lamb said about walking-on at OSU. "Both of my parents went there and I know a lot of people that go there too. It's a good program and it'd also be more of a college atmosphere."

Since Lamb has been sitting on the offer from PSU for a little while now, one could think that he might have soured on the Vikings. That's not the case. "They still want me to go there and they've said that they'll have it for me to signing day," Lamb said. "I'm just still thinking about what I want to do."

I watched Hubel in the state title, he was pretty good

Another O-lineman:

Not sure if he was on the team last year or not but got word that Saul Gamoudi is on the team. He played HS ball in Tigard, where he was an all-state o-lineman on Tigard's championship team and then went on to play football for Hawaii for a little bit. Not sure of his size but I think he is 6'4'' and 300+.

Man, are we set for O-line. I think we could still use a few great commits to shore up the position but definitely other positions are needed. What underclassmen are left on the D-line or anyone know of any possible prospects?

For quite some time, Drew Hubel has been waiting to see if someone would offer him a college scholarship. After all, the smart 6-foot-5, 185-pound quarterback from Corvallis High School had made three official visits and it only made sense that one of those schools would come forth with a full ride. Through it all, Hubel stayed positive and on Monday night, his patience was rewarded in a big way.

"Tonight, Portland State called me and they offered me a scholarship and I accepted," Hubel said. "I had talked to Oregon State earlier to see where they stood with me and they told me they wanted me to walk-on, so I was starting to think about that but then Portland State called me back with the full ride, so I had to go with that. It really wasn't that hard of a decision."

Hearing the magic words from the Vikings was music to Hubel's ears, but it wasn't the only reason he chose PSU. "I really like the relationship I've built with the quarterbacks coach," Hubel said. "He's a good guy and I've always seen myself playing for him, especially after talking with him and getting to know him well. That was one of the biggest things. I also like the offensive coordinator and he's a good guy too."

"Academically, they also offer two of the majors that I'm looking at going into," he continued. "And they play good football as a Division I-AA school."

Hubel comes to Portland State after the Vikings decided to bring in two prep quarterbacks, as PSU received a commitment from Lincoln standout Connor Kavanaugh in December. Hubel is well aware - and very respectful - of Kavanaugh's prowess as a high school player, but is ready to come in and battle for a spot his freshman season.

"I've been told that that we will both be competing for the number three spot and trying to make the traveling squad," Hubel said. "He's a good guy and we've all seen what he's done in high school. So I'm just going to try to hold my own against him and try to be great competition."

Hubel made his official visit to Portland State in December, and had also visited Weber State and Oregon State in January. OregonPreps.com would like to congratulate Hubel and his family on his decision.

Viks land Tarver

I think Tarver still has a lot to prove. I have personally thought of him as a bit soft. I saw him play with Jesuit a few times and frankly was surprised that OSU gave him a scholarship.

Here's hoping I'm wrong /users/31/07/37/smiles/welcome.gif
