Having an insiders view its great to hear these post on a regular basis. It definitely lifts player’s spirits. However being there and being put through the process of Sperbeck, the decisions made for the 2009 season look grim and dismal. A major key walked out of the door in the strength and conditioning department. Uribe was a key factor why those players were able to go as far as they did and now he’s gone. Then there’s the release of the DB's coach which was needed, but the Linebackers coach Brown are they insane? He was a huge part of why those players on defense were so disciplined. Both coaches were a good enough to find even better jobs already, and it goes to show you what a mistake it was to see them go. And neither wanted to leave, but were forced to by the hands of Sperbeck. Sperbeck is a business man granted trying to stay a float, but he’s gonna have it rough in the next coming seasons. The support from the players isn’t there, and he runs them into the ground. They'll be lucky enough to get through double days if he doesn’t kill them during spring. This isn’t JC ball, kids need rest to stay healthy. You can’t pass the blame onto your strength and conditioning coach or any other coaches. You have to eat it yourself Sperbeck. A family is what wins championships, not a business. He needs to look deeper than keeping his job. Uniting those players is what is important. That’s how you win, something that hasn’t ever been here in Sac. And he does no such thing, which makes the players distant.

If you mean , Uribe walked out because he didn't like it here, I think you are mistaken. When you get a chance to go to a larger university (aka "a promotion") you take it. Its not like he got pushed out the door. The DB coach was not released as a coach, just as the DB coach. He's going to coach the LBs with Baiz and a new DB coach is coming in. I really like Josh and it was a shame to see him be released, but two of the starting three linebackers were here before him and they were pretty good in their own right. Sometimes great players make good coaches look great. Who recruited those linebackers? They should get most of the credit and none of them came here through his efforts.

Sperbeck's making some tough decisions and most of them were decisions previous coaches didn't take responsibility for and it cost them their jobs and all of us the lack of progress this program has needed. You can't please everyone, but I for one, and I consider myself to have pretty good "inside" sources, believe the vast majority of this team is buying into Sperbeck and his staff's philosophy.

Yeah, a bit of surprise as JC kicker Augie Heath also verbaled in December. (as SacRat noted on his blog) Perhaps Sperbeck is setting up competition for the slot, or splitting kicking and punting duties. I believe Sac has needs in both roles. The FootballScoop thread notes Williams as “Big leg, needs to be coached up. Also played DB as a freshmen.”

Personally, whether or not we have specialists in both roles is irrelevant to me so long as the best guy is out there in the K position. Frank Corral was a wonderful K-P for the Rams, and there have been numerous others. I'd love to have the QB doubling at P as that always leaves the threat of a two-way fake for the defense to worry about. Danny White was the last true QB-P around, though Randall Cunningham and especially John Smell-Way had great success with quick kicks. George Blanda was a great QB-K, and Bob Waterfield had great success doing all three (though he also occasionally played DB).

It can be done, and I'd love to see it.

Good news on the recruiting front.

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that 3 local area highschool players. Have made verbal commitments to Sacramento State. All are big guys.

Keivaugh Barrett DL Sac High 6-4 290
Chad Tannenbaum OL Rio Americano 6-3 300
Ethan Westbrook DL Franklin 6-4-245

Other players who may sign as early as wednesday are first team all state QB/LB from State Champion Grant -KIPELI KONISETI. Another Grant player 3rd team All State LB Jeremiah Toma also considering Sacramento State. OL Matt Mccarthy from Christian Brothers is trying to decide between Brown, Harvard ,Montana and Sacramento State.

I'm very impressed with the local recruitng this year. I felt this is a must for Sacramento State.
It improves the ties to the community and will improve attendance.

This 3 recruits listed below came from losing programs. Can't they do any better than this?

Your wrong. Rio Americano Raiders finished 8-3, 4-1 in the CAL league and undefeated at home. They competed in the playoffs.

Losing teams have good players sometimes too. Bad thought process on your part stingerfan.
Recruiting isn't done yet and we will know more on Wednesday Letter of intent day(signing day).

Great players are not always found at winning programs....that's as bad of a statement as I've ever heard....the same when guys go to the NFL, not all of them come from wining programs or even from just Div. I FBS....

Yeah, just don't mention that to the Detroit Lions.

I'm just saying Sperbeck has plenty of better, bigger athletes in the area to go after before he sinks this low and signs 3 projects and I mean projects. All area coaches know that RIO has been a terrible football program, where have you been.

I won't get into this with you stingerfan . The fact is your statement was bad. Your not right and everyone on this board knows it. We'll leave it at that.

I just find it odd that this is the third time a new user has come on in the last week or so, and his/her first post goes after Sperbeck, starting with the strength coach thing....coincidence or agenda???????

Odd, very odd.

Wow, we are getting some amazing recruits. I don't recall us ever getting so many 2 and 3 star players. This is definitely looking good, but of course, anything can happen prior to getting written commitments this Wednesday.

I think this staff is doing a great job so far. Go Hornet!
