Recruits and-or News for 2008

Anybody have info on the team for next year? Any early recruiting info, or players leaving? What do we need to get to the playoffs next year?

1. I personally think if Higgins will be the x factor on how many games we will win.
2. I think our "D" will be dominating, but our corners need to improve.
3. Trevyn Smith is going to 3-peat as the Big Sky rushing leader.
4. I think we have a big hole to fill on the O line replacing Dave Hale.
5. We need a back-up QB to push Higgins, has Barnes left the program?
6. We need better play calling from the O.C. this is his 2nd season, hopefully he is a quick learner.

Recruiting is going well again this season. McBride really knows how to bring them in.
1. I agree Higgins is the key to our success. We had a learning season this past year and return 17-18 starters
2. Defense everyone returns except Sparrow... Beau Hadley steps in and gets All-Big Sky.
3. Trevin still will be the rushing leader but may have a harder time doing it without Hale and Tsoumpas. A 12 game season will help.
4. I heard through the rumor mill that Barnes probably will leave.
5. O.C. is not the problem... Barnes was the problem. I still haven't given up on Barnes though. If he could play in a game the way he practices he still could do alot of damage. He just needs his confidence back.

It would be great for the program if Barnes sticks around and becomes the player everyone thought he would be. But does he have the cahones to stay and fight for the starting position? How real was his knee injury, I will give him a pass if he was injured? Would Mac use 2 QB's, with their different styles it could cause some problems for our opponents.

Can Catfan or anyone verify if Barnes is off the team?

I would like to see Barnes stick around, if he could developed we could really have a crazy offense with a great passer and combined with the solid receiving corp. Put that with the ability to run a option with Higgins it could be a fun season. However, I did hear that an O linemen from last years Layton High team signed but I don't remember his name.

National letter of intent signing day for high school football recruits is Feb 6. The JC and 4 year transfer window is open now. This means the high school kids cannot sign unitl Feb 6 but JC transfers can sign now.

Let's hope he spends the offseason hitting the gym (which sounds like he dislikes) and getting healthy. Then come spring ball it would be nice to have a two headed monster at qb.

This is a big time pickup for Coach Mac he had several D1 offers, and also an offer from the Montana Griz. You can never have too many guys on the line. Coach Mac is a recruiting wizard, especially in Hawaii.

And:

"Running Back and receiver Antwain Stutson did not play football last fall after his graduation from Montclair High School in 2007, falling through the cracks in the collegiate recruiting process. He did attend Chaffey College on a part-time basis waiting for the phone to ring with a possible offer. The call finally did come, from Weber State. Stutson visited the campus earlier this month and he is now attending classes and will be eligible to participate in spring ball." http://rmbnews.com/members/default.asp

Weber recruiting news from the SL Trib:

Jamie Rigby, a combination running back and defensive back from Bountiful High has given the Wildcats a pledge, a source within the football department confirmed Friday.

Also, Ryan Eastman of Honolulu, Haw., and St. Louis High School said in an email this morning that he is headed to Ogden.

Ribgy was a first-team Tribune 4A all-stater in 2007 and rushed for almost 1,000 yards for the Braves.

Eastman, 6-0, 260, is ranked as the No. 9 recruit in Hawaii by Rivals.com and the 110th best defensive tackle in the country by ESPN.

Standard Examiner is reporting WSU also has snagged Brett Jividen from Tucson, Sahuaro High School. 6-5, 260 lbs. Reported to be 1 of the top 5 linemen in Tucson. He picked WSU over NAU because of Mac. Also reporting Demitri Enesi 6-2, 241 lbs, D.E. from Portland, Oregon has committed.

The Salt Lake Trib is reporting the following verbal commitments to Weber:
Jamie Rigby Bountiful H.S. RB/DB One of state's top all-around athletes
Ryan Eastman St. Louis H.S. (Hawaii) DL McBride tapped into his Island connections
Brett Jividen Sahuaro H.S. (Ariz.) OL Chose Wildcats over Northern Arizona
Justin Turner Layton H.S. OL Helped Lancers get to 5A title game
Demetri Enesi Westview H.S. (Portland) DE All-area performer is sack specialist
Keno Meadows Del City H.S. (Okla.) RB Cats made inroads into Oklahoma this year
Pierre Alexander Carl Albert H.S. (Okla.) DT Another Okie the Cats are high on
Joe Collins Monterey Peninsula J.C. WR Nice combo of size and speed
Joe Larsen Butte (Calif.) C.C. DL Should provide instant help on D-line
Nestor Cruz Reedley (Calif.) J.C. DL Mammoth tackle a run-stopper
Antoine Stutson Montclair H.S. CB Sat out a year to get grades up
Caldwell Taylor Bear River H.S. DL Returned missionary is 6-4, 220
Nick Webb East H.S. DB Returned missionary signed in 2006
Joel Hancock Fremont H.S. QB Put up big numbers in H.S. before mission
Blake Sims Clearfield H.S. DB RM should give Cats depth in secondary

Weber really needed to improve the secondary. These recruits look like they are going to do that. Also, these recruits look to be automatically providing the Wildcats with needed depth.
