OSU in Columbus in 05 (27-6 but closer than the score) and Michigan in Ann Arbor in 04 (SDSU led at the half and late in the 3rd quarter but lost 24-21) were both close and the teams received a lot of praise for their performance.laxVik said:

Of course that level of play didn't continue as the seasons continued and our HC lost his job deservedly.

There are questions about some of his coaches starting with a nepotistic hiring of a son of a talent scout (Special Teams). He has had a few defections, starting with Schantz.
I like how he has adjusted to some situations but the school is out. He seems to be on top of the issues, his recruiting of foundation players rather than skill positions is needed and mature.
The only real answer will be told by the end of the OOC games.

Coach Long is building it from ground up. Who knows if he will be successful.
I do know this....He is trying something at San Diego State that hasn't been tried in 30 years. No quick fix.....Looking for tougher players.....Demanding respect from players......Weeding out the malcontents.
If they give him time I think he will get it done, but Aztec fans are very impatient. They want the quick turnaround and that just doesn't happen real easily.

I believe Long is on the right track with this last recruiting class, but it's going to be a slow painful process in 07 and 08. By 09, I hope to see the program begin to make the turn for respectability.
