Big Sky Play Begins: UNC @ WSU
Watch Live | Listen Live
Weber State men's hoops will open up conference play this year at home against Northern Colorado this Saturday, Jan 3rd at 7 PM. The game will also be the annual mascot night. On New Year's Day UNC lost at Idaho State 62-61 in over-time.

The Bears and Wildcats have met on the court only 4 times in the history of both schools. Weber is 3-1 and Rahe has been the coach for each game. The first 2 meetings were during the 2006-07 season, the 'Cats won both games (61-60 & 76-65), also it was UNC's first year in the Big Sky. Overall as the head coach of Weber State, Randy Rahe is 42-33, 28-5 at home, 24-12 in Big Sky play, 17-2 at home in Big Sky games. Weber State is 2-0 all-time at home vs UNC and 1-1 at UNC. In fact, WSU is 30-2 at home all-time vs UNC, PSU, and Sac St combined.

Last season the 'Cats and Bears split 1-1, each won their home game. The game in Greeley was the first conference game of the year and was featured on the Altitude. The 'Cats lost 55-52 in a close battle that came down to the wire but hot UNC shooting from downtown made sure Weber left with its first ever loss to UNC. With a 2nd chance at the Bears later that season and in Ogden, WSU made sure the Bears would remember the WSU senior class of 2008. UNC got blown out 70-54; WSU senior Dez Harris had 21 points and 4 steals, WSU senior Arturas Valeika had 16 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a steal.

This season UNC was picked by the coaches/media polls to finish 6th in the Big Sky. So far the Bears are 5-9 overall and 1-1 in conference by having beat NAU at home this past Monday in an impressive come-from-behind 81-79 win after being down by 10 at the half and then lost at ISU on Thursday.

UNC's Coach
Tad Boyle, 3rd year, Kansas 1985
Boyle, a Greeley native, spent 6 years as an assistant at Wichita State before coming to UNC. In 2006 Witchita State while Boyle was on staff they went 26-9 and advanced to the Sweet 16 by taking down Seton Hall (86-66) & Tennessee (80-73). Witchita eventually lost to Final 4 cinderella George Mason.

It really was a great game, kept me interested to watch the whole thing and neither team was my school.

Looks like Boyle had good things to say about the game even though it wasn't a W. Both teams played hard.

UNC had a lane violation with about a minute or 2 left that gave ISU an extra point. Then ISU blocked UNC's final shot of the game sending it into over time.

Over time, UNC forced ISU to turn the ball over on their first 4 possessions...then ISU had a lucky tip in to win it at the end.

So after seeing one conf game looks like UNC has pretty good D, best FT shooting team in the conference and some of the best 3 pt shooters as well.

Should be a good game in Ogden tomorrow.

Anyone else having no luck with Big Sky TV? First there's video and no audio, then audio and no video, now it's totally down... Weber's broadcast makes the UNC broadcasts look like the Super Bowl. Pathetic.

No, I'm not having any problems. I see we're up at half!

Figures clutch at the free throw line. Damn, Weber hanging in with the 3 pointer. 30 seconds left.

Needless to say, our defense needs some work. After seeing this happen all football season, this is just too much.

I think the only stop we got in OT was a 1/2 charge 1/2 blocking call.

It's frustrating, I know the team must be frustrated, but the exact same thing happened last year we lost two games in a row on the road in OT and that cost us making the tournament. Their goal this year was to make the tourny and losing these two games could very well be the reason they don't make it this year.

Wow, Northern Colorado fans, I must say, you guys have built up some hoops program in such a short time. Your guards are efficient, speedy, and great jump shooters. Banks is a monster in the paint, and smooth from the line. All of your Juniors are great players. I was very, very impressed by your team and was frankly shocked that you guys didn't win. I'm expecting big things from the Bears this Big Sky season, and even more from them next season. Good luck, from a Weber fan who has some new found respect for UNC hoops.

Thanks bigpapa - you've got a nice squad too!

Damn, that was nice of you to write that. We are so depressed after our football season then seeing several basketball games fall apart, it's good to have someone say nice things about a Bears team.

An outside perspective is interesting to read. It is important to keep that in mind but it's still been disapointing that we can't seem to get over the hump. As it stands right now the team seems about equal to last year's team and I know everyone, fans, players, coaches, expected the team to be better than last year and not just equal.
