Vikings: Schantz picked for All-Star game

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2008/12/vikings_schantz_picked_for_all.html

Raise your hand if you've ever heard of the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge.

For those with hands down, it's a college football game for seniors, featuring players who are originally from Texas or who played college ball in Texas against top players from graduating seniors from across the country.

Why should anybody in Portland care? Because Portland State linebacker Andy Schantz has been named to the Nation squad for the third annual Challenge on Jan. 31 at the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

For Schantz, who led the Vikings with 115 tackles, including 15 tackles for loss, this is an opportunity for the 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker to show some NFL scouts what he can do in an all-star setting.

There were 20 players for last year's game that got invitations to the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

And, if you're wondering, Team Nation was the first game 24-21, and the Team Texas won last year's game 41-14.

Update from the PSU Pro Day.

3/14/2009 - Portland State Pro day: They worked out at a velocity center in Hillsboro, Oregon. They ran outdoors at the high school field next door on AstroTurf. Fifteen teams showed up to watch eight players work out. The two most notable players were LB Andy Schantz and CB Reginald Jones. Shantz (6-0 3/4, 234 pounds) ran a 4.71 and 4.75 in the 40, had a 34-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump, a 7.48 three-cone drill, a 4.34 short shuttle and did 19 bench press reps. ??? 19. Andy Schantz, 6-1, 235, Portland State, Middle Linebacker

Schantz has been an intriguing player for several pro teams, with his combination of size, speed and aggressiveness. He made a mark early in his career, starting as a freshman at San Diego State. A new coaching staff, a change in scheme and his outspokenness prompted Schantz to transfer to Portland State for his final two years. He was sometimes overshadowed by the struggles of the Viking defense, but learned a lot while being tutored by former NFL coach Jerry Glanville. He was a top-10 finisher in the Buchanan Award race and ended his PSU career with 200 career tackles. Schantz is an active player, who is good shedding blocks and running to the ball. He could also develop into a strong special teams performer. Projection: 7th round.

Andy Shantz signs with the Steelers plus other Vikings NFL news....

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2009/04/psus_schantz_signs_deal_with_n.html

I think the Steelers will be a better situation than the Minnesota Vikings.

I guess the ink didn't dry in Minnesota and Andy is headed to Pittsburgh.

PSU's Schantz signs deal with NFL's Steelers

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2009/04/psus_schantz_signs_deal_with_n.html

Former Portland State linebacker Andy Schantz signed a free-agent contract with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers and is expected to report for rookie camp with the reigning Super Bowl champions later this week.

In other free-agent moves involving former Vikings players, cornerback Reggie Jones signed with the New Orleans Saints, and kicker Danny Urrego agreed to terms with the Buffalo Bills.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Schantz led the Vikings last season with 115 tackles, including 15 tackles for loss, one interception, and one fumble recovery in 11 games, and was named the team's most valuable player in voting by his teammates.

PSU coach Jerry Glanville said Pittsburgh could be a good fit for the Schantz, because the Steelers' defensive scheme is similar in several ways to what the Vikings have tried to do the past two seasons.

"Pittsburgh didn't draft any linebackers and Andy knows their system," Glanville said. "There are a lot of positive things working in Andy's favor. He has tremendous passion for the game, and one thing about Steelers coach Dick LeBeau is he wants people who love football. So, I think Dick LeBeau will appreciate how important football is to Andy."

Jones, a 6-foot, 200-pound defensive back, played in 10 games for the Vikings last season and was eighth on the team in tackles with 38 and second in interceptions with four.

Urrego set a single-season school record for field goals, connecting on 15 of 23 attempts, including six from between 40-49 yards. He also punted 58 times, averaging 40.5 yards per punt with a long of 72.

Schantz lands with Super Bowl champs
Three former Vikings are picked up by NFL teams as undrafted free agents

While the journey was not necessary ideal, Andy Schantz believes the final destination is just right.

The former Portland State linebacker hoped to be selected in this past weekend’s NFL Draft, figuring he might hear his name called sometime from the fifth to seventh round. However, that hope never came to fruition.

Instead, Schantz received a phone call from the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round explaining that they had no intention of drafting a linebacker but would like him to join the team as an undrafted free agent.

“I am definitely happy that yesterday is over,” Schantz said before exhaling deeply. “Being a free agent, I feel like I’ve been put in the best position possible.”

Schantz is not the only former Portland State player that was picked up Monday as an undrafted free agent to sign with an NFL squad, as cornerback Reggie Jones agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints and kicker Danny Urrego signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Quick and athletically gifted, Jones finished the 2008 season with four interceptions and 38 tackles, and Urrego connected on 15 of 23 field goals and averaged 40.5 yards per punt last season.

When Pittsburgh extended the invitation to the 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker late in the draft Sunday, asking him if he would like to join the Steelers, Schantz said he responded with a resounding “Yeah, I’m fired up about it.”

Schantz recognizes that he has a lot of work ahead of him if he hopes to repeat what a pair of former Portland State linebackers have done over the past two seasons: Make an NFL roster.

Jordan Senn made the Indianapolis Colts roster as an undrafted free agent last year and Adam Hayward survived training camp to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft two years ago.

Relying on a good friend and former teammate, Schantz conversed with Senn on Monday about the challenging road ahead.

“I don’t want to get too excited because there is a lot of work to do,” said Schantz, who led the Vikings with 115 tackles and 15 tackles for a loss last season.

Portland State head coach Jerry Glanville spoke with Schantz Monday, telling the soon-to-be rookie linebacker that he could not be happier for him and that the Steelers were an excellent fit.

In a few days Schantz will head east for the beginning of rookie camp, where he hopes to kick off his pursuit of making the Steelers roster with a couple impressive days of practice.

More than anything, Schantz feels that the Steelers are such a great fit because of the general mentality of the organization, which has won the most Super Bowls in NFL history with six.

“Their objective is to be champions every year,” Schantz said, “and that goes along with me.”
