Schedule released

Football schedule was released today, only 10 games next year… Possibility of adding an 11th.

Pretty ugly when we can’t find a third nonconference game, it’s actually an absolute joke considering we don’t have a home nonconference game right now.

I’m guessing if we do add an 11th game it’s either going to be against an FBS team, or a D2, And it sure sounds like an IF right now.

Pretty pathetic, honestly. At this point, just pay Whitworth to come to Cheney and be done with it. With 5 months to go, the schedule just needs to be completed. We can't have only four home games. That's absurd. Interesting fact, as of now, we don't have a single non-conference home game on the schedule until 2020.

Might as well load the team on buses and have a scrimmage in the Tri-Cities. At least we may gain some new fans.

It just boggles my mind how piss poor a job we’ve done at scheduling. 10 games is a joke, zero non conf home games this year is a joke and like you said we have zero so far next year too and I believe that’s a 12 game year...

It seems like we could get on the phone with Simon Fraser or someone like that and have them signed on contract within 48 hours. Not ideal, but I think we've already passed by ideal and need to face the reality of grasping at straws. The team can't just blow off the first weekend of the year. Plus, the weather will likely be nice and getting a decent crowd shouldn't be difficult. Covering whatever needs to be paid to get a team like that to Cheney should be fairly easy to manage.

Here's another thing to think about... Chavez scheduled a one-off road game at South Dakota for $50k. If Eastern can be bought for $50k, I doubt Simon Fraser is going to cost more. Even if we sell discounted $10 tickets, there'd only need to be 5,000 sold tickets to over the contract. The term "sure thing" comes to mind. That doesn't even begin to compute parking and concessions, or merch sales which are pretty significant on game day weekends (I know this because I usually stop by the bookstore and it is always packed). Revenues from those ought to cover all of our staffing of the stadium.

You don't need a doctorate in business to make something like that pencil.

Ok... I'm running searches just for fun on which teams have open dates and when they have them. Sept 1 is a tough one, as other teams managed to do their schedules on time and have games.

I'll keep a running list of teams with open dates on 9/1

First one I've found... Wayland Baptist, NAIA from Texas
Concordia University, NAIA from Nebraska
Cal Lutheran, D3 from California
Howard Payne University, D3 from Texas (we played them once back in the 80s)
Lewis and Clark College, D3 in Oregon (in our damn backyard!)
Pacific Lutheran, D3 from Washington (hello!)

Oh, Ya but that AD sure was great

One must consider there are expenses associated with hosting a game (while some are fixed, others likely aren't) so you'd probably need more than $50k.

The SR article offered some good insight though, and it seems as if EWU's success has made it a bit harder. If I'm an FBS program, I'm probably looking towards other FCS teams to fill out my schedule with EWU's history of hanging with and beating Pac 12 teams. If I'm a lower tier team, I'm probably going to ask for more money to play at a team that not only will likely beat me down, but risk injury as well.

Looks like the priority from the AD is to get another home game, even if it means paying 11 games straight, so it's nice to see that sense of urgency there.

I saw some D3 teams thrown around. Is that even allowed?

Hi Vic;
Are you saying #95 Simpson is back? On this roster a couple of Sr do not have a number are they new? http://www.espn.com/college-football/team/roster/_/id/331/eastern-washington-eagles
Have you seen Jay Tee Tuili?

I would actually be a little excited about playing CWU or Whitworth. For different reasons, but they would both be at least interesting games. Whitworth, because we would be playing a team that we essentially share a city with. We have also played 64 games against them in the past, with a 40-24 record. My wife is a Whitworth alumni too. We met at the Basement in Cheney when she came out with her Whitworth friends for one of Cheney's First Thursday events. I'm sure there are a good handful of other alumni who have similar Whitworth connections or stories.

Central would be fun for a few reasons... First, they are rumored to be considering a move to D1 football (maybe even the BSC?), as one of our threads covered a couple of months back. Second, they are a very good D2 team and would not be some NAIA or trash D2 team from an area outside of the PNW. And lastly, we are 33-30-4 against them. Like Whitworth, that is a neat old rivalry that would be cool to pull out of the archives once more if we are not playing an FCS/FBS oponent. Pacific Lutheran would not be the worst either. We are 16-13-3 with them and they are still within the state of Washington. I only graduated in 2014, so it is cool to me to see some of the history of the program within the numbers when talking about these lower-level teams.

All in all, playing any of these three teams (or even Lewis and Clark) would be at least unique. They may not be the most exciting games or help our playoff chances, but they would be something to remember because they are semi-local teams. A D2 or NAIA from outside of the PNW draws very little excitement from myself and, I am guessing, the rest of the fan base.

Whitworth is a non-starter as they are already scheduled on 9/1. Central has not officially released their schedule yet, but they did have a rumored 9/1 game already. Our only real shot at getting an opener would be getting an exemption to start the season in August or some of the teams I mentioned.

I know LC is woefully underfunded, so getting some semblance of a payday against Eastern might be attractive to them.

My hunch-- take it for what's it's worth (not much)-- is we're trying to get an August game scheduled and getting that approved is a hold up. If we just fixed sights on available (and unattractive) 9/1 opponents, we'd fill the date.

Also, keep in mind this is bad for the AD as well. She can't start marketing season ticket packages until the games are set. I'm sure there is a lot of motivation to get this done quickly.

Having price pt for a 4 game package and a 5 game package IF one is added(boy am I excited). Renewals start in 10 days and not sure when they will be open for general public...4 home games...at least Idaho is one as is MSU...UC Davis and Cal Poly. Holy shit that's gonna be challenging selling this..wtf just happened?

This is pathetic boys. Montana used to have FCS teams like San Diego come up all the time. Why can’t EWU schedule a non conference game like that vs an FCS school? There’s over 100 FCS teams, what’s the issue? Better question is, why TF don’t we have 11 games scheduled already!? Who’s at the wheel?

Good luck finding another school at any level that has an opening that weekend. The next shock will be pricing of the short season tickets.

The good news is we win the OPEN dates... How does the rest of the season break down? EWU has some of the best talent in the FCS, but not sold on the program's focus, know that the staff is back and hoping for better this season.

This is a VERY tough schedule even getting a pass on Montana. Easiest games may be Cal Poly and PSU. UC Davis showed huge improvement and MSU will upgrade to conference contender this season. Idaho is well coached and barring a let down with the FCS move is a favorite. Big Sky will be brutal this season. Can easily see 4 or more losses on this schedule. Is home on the Inferno an advantage any longer?

Date - Opponent - Site - Time - Series
Sept. 1 - Open EWU Wins
Sept. 8 - at Northern Arizona - Flagstaff, Ariz. -
Sept. 15 - at Washington State - Pullman, Wash. -
Sept. 22 - Cal Poly*% - Cheney, Wash. -
Sept. 29 - at Montana State* - Bozeman, Mont. -
Oct. 6 - Southern Utah* - Cheney, Wash. -
Oct. 13 - at Weber State* - Ogden, Utah -
Oct. 20 - Open EWU Wins
Oct. 27 - Idaho* - Cheney, Wash.
Nov. 3 - at Northern Colorado* - Greeley, Colo. -
Nov. 10 - UC Davis*& - Cheney, Wash. -
Nov. 17 - at Portland State* - Portland, Ore. -
Nov. 24 - FCS Playoffs Begin

The funny thing is that one of the out of conference games is a pseudo-non con against NAU. Basically, there's 9 conference games this year. Our previous AD could only manage one non-conference opponent, and it was a money game against a team from down the highway. In other words, Chaves didn't cultivate a single relationship out of conference that could provide a game. That is really pathetic.

The new AD walked into a bit of a scheduling shitstorm... One that was many years in the making. But she took the job, so it's on her now to get it solved. I think most fans would give her a pass on just about any home game, regardless of who comes to town. Just get it done.
