Search for the New Head Coach at Portland State

So it's a done deal with Bone taking off. I think Washington State had the right idea in the amount of time they took to hire a new coach and I hope we follow suit.

So it look like the candidates are for the new head coach are:

Tyler Geving
Terry Porter
Cameron Dollar
Jim Shaw
Ray Giacoletti

I don't think Porter is very likely, but he is being paid by the Suns for the next three years and salary won't really be an issue, so you never know. He may be the kind of coach that is better suited for college than the NBA . From what I've heard Dollar is a great recruiter so that is appealing, but hasn't he gotten in trouble with the NCAA for some recruiting violations? Don't know anything about Shaw except that he's an assistant at UW. Giacoletti was pretty good at EWU, but only got them to the tournament once (making it to the Big Sky title game a bunch of times and not winning it isn't that impressive to me), he did well his first year at Utah with a stacked team that Majerus left him, but didn't do well after that. I see as a good sign that Gonzaga decided to take him on as an assistant, but I question his ability to recruit. And then there's Geving, I have to say he would be my first choice at this point, its seems to me he does most of the work in the recruiting and has done an excellent job and I think it gives us the best chance to retain all of our recruits and current players. I think keeping continuity in this program is the best plan of action after the success that we've had recently. My only worry with Geving is that if we do continue to have success he will jump ship quickly as well, but that's pretty much always going to be a concern with the PSU job, at least until we get a new arena and more fan support. So here's how I'd rank these candidates in who I'd most like to succeed Bone:

1. Geving
2. Dollar
3. Porter
4. Shaw
5. Giacoletti

I'm sure more candidates will emerge as the search goes on. What's everybody's take on this and add on other candidates you've heard of.

Grant - You already beat me on creating a thread for this. We can kill my thread.

Someone suggested that we consider Arizona's former interim head coach Russ Pennell.

What about a guy from a smaller school in Oregon who knows the region?

One good example:

Ryan Looney, 33 years old, Head Coach at Eastern Oregon University (NAIA)
2004-2005 - 4W 22L
2005-2006 - 17W 11L
2006-2007 - 23W 8L
2007-2008 - 26W 6L (lost in NAIA Sweet 16)
2008-2009 - 25W 8L (lost in NAIA Elite 8 to eventual Nat. Champions)
The last 3 seasons are the 4 best in the history of EOU's basketball program.

I'd mention Danny Miles as he's a great coach at Oregon Tech (and national champs in 2008), but he is not likely to make the move after 38 years and 876 wins (6th all-time in NCAA/NAIA history), but this shows great coaches sit in less obvious places.

This article: http://www.dailyvanguard.com/stott-center-vacancy-1.1646055
mentions Leon Rice as a candidate, here's the blurb on him

Leon Rice
Last job: associate head coach at Gonzaga
Alma mater: Washington State University, 1986

Rice joined the Gonzaga staff in 1999 but boasts extensive background in coaching in the Northwest. He previously has coached at Yakima Valley College and as an assistant at Oregon and Big Sky rival Northern Colorado.

The success that Gonzaga has while Rice has been a part of the staff—a 236-60 record—is nearly unmatched.
He could be a candidate that might slip under the radar, but Mark Few, Gonzaga’s head coach, has had a winning impact rub-off on some of his former assistants.

Can't say he'd be that high on my list, but I really don't know much about the guy. This article also mentions Dollar and I think he at least deserves an interview, this article mentions that PSU wants someone that has lots of ties in the NW so that could be a strike against Dollar (but really he HAS recruited local guys well for Washington so it may be a non-issue)

The head coach at Cal Poly Pomona would make a good men's basketball coaching candidate:

He has head coaching experience. Knows the west coast. Has had tremendous success. Pomona was in the DII championship game. (What made Bone successful was his proven head coaching experience at SPU.)

If there was any way that Porter was interested, he would certainly help with the new arena fundraising.

He would certainly generate a lot of publicity. However, does he know how to coach and does he understand how to coach at the college level and run a college program?

Another thought about hiring Ray Giacoletti....He might stick around longer than most other coaches because he has had the experience at the University of Utah. If he were successful at PSU other schools might be hesistant to hire him away because Utah fired him. PSU shouldn't hold that against him since I don't believe that was fair evaluation.

The Vanguard's rundown seems solid, although I'd like to see Shaw in consideration in addition to the names mentioned in the article. The more I look at it, Giacoletti seems pretty attractive. He's the only candidate with honest to goodness head coaching experience.

Dwight Jaynes offers his thoughts on PSU's search:

http://www.dwightjaynes.com/where-does-bones-departure-leave-psu

Dwight Jaynes is a dolt. He's a PSU alum but loves to bad mouth PSU. I'd say Portland State should attract lots of qualified candidates based on our past success and the success of our past coaches. Ritchie McKay went to Colorado State. Heath Schroyer is now at Wyoming and of course Bone is at Washington State. Sobotka didn't succeed but he has survived in the coaching ranks and did also beat Arizona State and Oregon while he was here.

I think the candidate who has a resume closest to Bone's should get the job: Head coaching experience, Pac-10 experience, Pacific Northwest and California recruiting connections and similar team style philosophies.

Portland State, Seattle U. make official contact with Dollar

Posted by Bob Condotta, Seattle Times

University of Washington athletic director Scott Woodward confirmed today that both Seattle University and Portland State University have asked to speak with UW assistant Cameron Dollar about the head coaching vacancies at their schools.

"They have serious interest in coach Dollar,'' Woodward said. "He is talking to both.''

Woodward said Dollar isn't necessarily looking to leave UW but that as with any assistant, his ultimate goal is to be a head coach someday. Dollar, who is 33 years old, has been at UW since 2002, arriving along with head coach Lorenzo Romar. Dollar has been an assistant for Romar since 1999 when both were at Saint Louis.

"Any program that would have coach Dollar would have a great, young coach leading their team,'' Woodward said. "But as he has stated to me on numerous occasions, he is very happy at the University of Washington and is only going to leave for the right opportunity.''

Woodward said Dollar has yet to have formal interviews with either school saying that "he has talked to them but he has not talked seriously.''

Dollar makes $132,000 a year at UW and also gets another $10,000-15,000 in money from the school's summer camp. Ken Bone was making $125,000 at Portland State before leaving Monday to become the head coach at Washington State.

The head coach at PSU needs to be able to recruit?

Thanks for the brilliant work Dwight. My dog probably could come up with something more informative.

What about Joe Cravens?

116-88 at Weber, 1 big sky title, 6 yr term
Had a 16-0 team
Beat LSU, Wisconsin, BYU, Utah, Utah State...

I'd go for Giacoletti to make a Big Sky comeback. He'd guarentee PSU to stay in the top 3 every year.

Just as an FYI, Dollar was a finalist for our job last year before it was awarded to Katz.

I remember that. Why do you think the Hornets didn't pick him?

I think because we wanted someone that had some head coaching experience. That and someone who can recruit locally (someone who really knows the area well) as well as nationally.

I agree that head coaching experience is important. That's why Bone was so successful. He had a track record at Seattle Pacific.
