Search for the New Head Coach at Portland State

Ok, I'll bite. Why do you all dislike Dwight Jaynes so much?

I've never really liked him since his days at the Oregonian.

It's the same thing with Canzano. Rarely anything to say about anything non blazer/beaver/duck. When they do chime in, it's rarely positive. It's about how small we are, how little our budgets are, etc.

I heard Jaynes interviewed on TV recently about the NCAA. He was trashing PSU and saying how they were such a small time program and didn't deserve to be in the tourney and how the tourney should only be for the big conference schools. He goes gaga over the NBA.

Getting back to the original thread...

An O-live forum posting mentioned the Beaver Assistant Doug Stewart as a possibility for PSU.

I saw the Stewart thing and looked up his bio. What is there to be impressed by? If we hire him, I hope we don't go to OSU's offense. Bone's wide open style really appealed to recruits.

Here's an article from the Tribune promoting Geving:

I agree with the reasoning, and I hope this whole situation is resolved soon.

If Geving turns out to be the pick, I'll surely support it. I am glad we are opening the process to see who all the possible candidates are. If we can get someone with credentials like Bone had, that would be ideal.

I agree that would should interview and be open to all of the most qualified candidates that are interested in the job, I just think that in the end they're going to find that Geving is the best choice. Now that may not be the case, and if not I trust Chisholm's judgement to some extent.

Dollar and Geving look to be the two leading candidates for the job:

--- Word is Cameron Dollar may be meeting with Portland State officials today to discuss the head coaching vacancy there. Nothing is expected to happen until next week, but the meeting today could determine how serious both sides are about each other. Ken Bone said on KJR just a few minutes ago that PSU also interviewed associate head coach Tyler Geving today. Geving has been thought by some a favorite for the job. Dollar also remains in the mix at Seattle U though it's likely his first choice would be PSU since it's already an established D-I school.

Coach to be named Monday or Tuesday...

This article leaves me feeling like Geving will be the choice. I think he wants the PSU job as opposed to someone like Dollar, who may just want a D-1 job.

If it is him, I hope that the AD stresses that we'd like someone here long term. Not the 3-4 years and you jump ship. Sort of a 'meet me in the middle' type agreement. We'll work on facilities, if you ensure that we'll not need to worry about our head coach leaving with our continued success.

Portland State coaching update

The Oregonian reports this afternoon that Portland State is likely to name a new head coach Monday or Tuesday.

That seems to indicate the school is likely to promote associate head coach Tyler Geving, who has been perceived to be the front-runner for the job from the minute Ken Bone left for WSU.

UW assistants Cameron Dollar and Jim Shaw had what were considered to be rather informal interviews for the job on Thursday, thought to be along the likes of feeling them out as fallback positions, the assumption being it's likely to go to Geving. (Though I always throw out the caveat that you never know for sure in these things).

If PSU does hire Geving, that then leaves Seattle University as the other regional school still looking for a coach. Only Dollar of UW assistants is involved in that one, believed to be one of the favorites. The San Jose Mercury News also reported this week that former San Francisco coach Phil Matthews, now an assistant at Nebraska, is also a candidate, noting that he worked with current Seattle U AD Bill Hogan while at USF.

It's Geving. Here's the link to the report from Stumptown Sports Hook:

I think it's a good choice, but we'll see in the years to come. It will be interesting to see who he selects as his assistant coaches and if we are able to retain all of our current players and recruits. I'm really hoping that Melvin Jones ends up coming to PSU as he has only verbally committed to the VIks and I think he'll be a key player for us next year.

I heard Dom Waters on 95.5 yesterday and according to him all of the current key players are sticking around. Geving said in his press conference said that Jacobsen and Harriel were staying on as well as and couldn't comment on Jones and Lozeau, but pretty much said they're a done deal too.

With respect to the assistant coaches Waters said he thought that all of the current assistants would be staying (Allen, Raiford, and Harper) and that they would just be hiring one more assistant essentially to take Geving's spot. However in the press conference Geving didn't name any assistants, but said it would be settled in the next week or so. I wouldn't be surprised if Bone ends up taking one of the assistants with him as he has an entire coaching staff to fill out.

All in all I think this is the best case scenario for PSU basketball considering that Bone left. If all this holds to be true we shouldn't miss a beat and should have the most talent of any team in the Big Sky once again.

Geving wasn't actually an Assistant Coach, he was an Associate Head Coach. Semantics, as I'm sure he'll pick up another assistant.
