Game Day: Seattle at Portland State

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2010/02/game_day_seattle_at_portland_s.html

When: Noon Sunday

Where: Stott Center (1,500), Portland

Records: Seattle (10-13); Portland State (10-12)

On the air: Radio on KPDQ (800)

Probable starters: Seattle -- F Aaron Broussard (10.4 ppg), F Gavin Gilmore (3.8 ppg), F Charles Garcia (20.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg), G Cervante Burrell (10.8 ppg, 3.9 apg), G Taylor Olson (2.6 ppg); Portland State -- F Julius Thomas (9.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg), F Paul Guede (4.6 ppg), C Jamie Jones (13.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg), G Melvin Jones (12.8 ppg), Dominic Waters (18.2 ppg, 4.7 apg).

Briefly: Today's non-conference game was originally scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but the teams agreed to move the start up two hours so fans attending the game could get home before the start of the Super Bowl.

For the first time in 111 appearances for the Vikings, Julius Thomas led the team in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in Friday's 76-62 victory at Sacramento State.

Today's game is the first of three consecutive home games in six days for the Vikings, who return to Big Sky Conference Friday against Montana and Saturday against Montana State.

Last season, the Vikings played Seattle twice, beating the Redhawks 81-67 in the third-place game of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, and then winning 73-68 a week later at the Stott Center.

Dang, good defense on that last possession, but credit has to go to Broussard for draining that three with two guys on him.

How in the heck was there not a technical foul called on Seattle when their entire team and staff runs to mid-court to celebrate? We weren't 'actively trying to inbound the ball?' Really? How do you inbound the ball when there are twenty additional people jumping up and down at mid-court?

Sloppy game for us with regards to turnovers. We looked both fantastic and terrible at times against the press.

Oh well, this doesn't hurt us with regards to conference play, but it's a bit of a letdown to lose a game that we should have won.

I agree about the crazy no-technical call at the end. All we had to do was make our way through Cameron Dollar, 12 players, 4 other coaches, and a priest who were all celebrating on the floor and inbound the ball. Makes total sense to me.
'
Jamie Jones is having such a great senior season. In conference play he's near the top in scoring, leads the Big Sky in rebounding and blocks. He just seems to play quietly, non-flashy, and dominates. Can't believe a 6'7" center can go for 18 points, 9 boards, and 5 blocks and it doesn't seem like a big deal.

And did someone just tell him that he can dunk today?

Very entertaining game, tough loss. I like how Seattle plays (with full-court pressure and quick transition from defense to offense), but if the PSU guards had played better this game would have gone the other way. Both Julius Thomas and Jamie Jones were warriors down low and Waters and Melvin Jones showed they both are more combo guards than true point guards. I think Phillip Thomas should play more, especially with Nelson out for the season now, as it would give the Vikings more size, which is needed at times. Hope the Viks take care of business this week against the Montana schools.

I was thinking that all the NBA scouts purported to be at the game to look at Garcia must have come out saying " Never mind Garcia; who's that Jamie Jones guy?!"

If any player could have been a secondary coming in, it likely would have been Nelson. Even Waters is unlikely to get more than a quick look at team workouts. The 3 scouts that actually showed up had no interest in Jones, although they did like the dunk attempt by Julius over the SU player.

Did Tyler Geving get outcoached by Cameron Dollar? Did PSU pick the wrong head coach?

Nope. The coach didn't turn the ball over 24 times, the players did.

And Cameron Dollar's players didn't turn the ball over! I see a pattern! ;)

Refs now OK with premature celebrations

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/3537/refs-now-ok-with-premature-celebrations

Remember when the Washington State bench got called for a costly technical foul with 0.3 seconds left for coming onto the court for celebrating a potential game-winning shot?

The refs apparently got the NCAA memo about that.

On Sunday, Seattle's Aaron Broussard hit a three-pointer to beat Portland State. There were still 0.5 seconds left on the clock while his teammates rushed the court, but no technical foul was called.

From a Portland State press release:

Broussard tossed up a desperation three from the top of the circle that swished as the shot clock buzzer sounded.

The Seattle team rushed the floor and, although time remained to play, the officials stopped the game and cleared the floor for Portland State's final chance. No technical foul was issued to Seattle because the officials deemed the Vikings were not actively attempting to inbound the ball.

Here's how The Oregonian saw it:

As the shot went through, everybody from the Redhawks' bench ran onto the floor to mob Broussard. The Vikings, recalling what happened earlier this season in the Oregon-Washington State game, wanted a technical foul called, but didn't get one because of a rules change that went into effect as a result of the Ducks-Cougars incident.

The difference between the two situations was that Washington State was at least in the vicinity of the bench when they were called for coming onto the court whereas Seattle apparently thought the shot clock buzzer was the final buzzer and went wild.

But this time, the whistle didn't blow.
