Sept. 18th Idaho State Gameday Thread

Nice game Bears, defense played much better after the 1st quarter. Take away #10 for ISU and the Bears dominated the game. good complete game by offense and defense. Hope no one gets hurt in the paycheck game next week. I think we'll be okay in the BSC. There is only one more game on the schedule (after next week) that we shouldn't expect to be competitive in!!!
 
Nice job guys! Congrats to the players and coaches. I'm really worried though about our injuries. Both to our o-line and backfield. Hopefully Andre's ankle will be okay.

Couple things that stood out.

- That sack late in the 4th by Matt King was huge. I think it was a big 3rd or 4th down.
- Kamen's pin point punt that was late in the 4th was absolutely huge. He redeemed himself for a bad punt in the 1st.

I agree that if it weren't for #10 for ISU we would have dominated. He's a player for sure.
 
Good job Bears! I think the problems we had in the field goal kicking game as of late helped as I was glad to see us go for it on those 4th downs. There #10 was quite impressive.
 
I agree if 10 hadn't return those for TDs, UNC would've rolled. I thought Idaho St was a little improved as well. Good win.
 
The cool thing is that Montana also lost and we're ahead of them in the standings. We have a great shot at beating them in 2 weeks for homecoming! On a side note, over 5,000 at the game today in Greeley. Not bad I guess, but we can do better.
 
Yeah this was an odd game to try and break down, I thought we were lucky to be tied at the half with that return being called back and the missed chip shot field goal.

On offense we seemed to move the ball well and control the T.O.P. Pass prtection was subpar and that performance won't get it done moving forward. The run game was decent but not dominating. 35 points scored and all the result of long drives nothing was given to us so the scoring production was there which is the most important thing. But a pick in the red zone is always a worse case scenario.

On defense I though we dominated as well, they really had one nice drive and the rest of the game couldn't do anything.

Special teams, oh lord, but I'm not even sure if it was just that Moore was so good, he had some moves you don't see in a video game, the 360 spin along the sidelines for the last TD was extra ordinary.... however, having said that we seem to punt a very returnable ball and the new guy on kickoffs hits them shallow and low so very returnable, we got destroyed in field position on special teams.

Overall it was a W that's the important thing but it shouldn't have been as close as it was and fortunatly we didn't find a way to blow it and closed them out, thank God.

It was funny though we made the plays we had to to win and Idaho State looked a lot like the UNC teams we've seen the last few years you could just see they didn't know how to win.

Overall if I had to grade the performance overall I'd give it a B-.
 
Ya I think this game was kinda opposite from last week, last week I thought the O looked good and the D didn't look so good. This week the D dominated, and O still looked good but not as good as last week I thought. Hopefully the injuries to Shapiro and Harris aren't that bad, they look to be just ankle injuries. How come Schwindt wasn't suited up?
 
I just looked, 2.9 yards per carry needs to improve a lot, I wonder what the story is on Harris because we need him badly...

We lost 53 yards on sacks, which goes in the rushing department, that really hurt the yards per carry.

Harris hurt his ankle, he had ice on it for most of the 2nd half.
 
Great game, I love what Orms and how he plays. You have a very solid team, however I don't know if your offensive line is young or not, but currently they are getting consistently beat at least at the edges which may be the only thing keeping you from really doing some damage in the conference this year. Your Qb can does a great job of minimizing their mistakes but it will catch up to you at some time..

Thanks for the props Bp. Orms is a very good player and we're lucky to have him. The O Line has struggled with youth and injuries. We do have a good O LIne coach and I think he'll patch things up. Other wise, you're right it's going to be another long year.

Here's the thing "bpcats", the starting o-line was only all together and healthy for game #1. Barbiasz (tackle) was hurt in the first game and missed the game at Weber. Gumbs (guard) was hurt in the Weber game and is out for the season. Don't know when Candler (tackle) was hurt but he has been gimpy. Shapiro (guard) was injured in the Idaho State game and is questionable for Mighigan State. Believe it or not, the only starter on the O-line that hasn't been injured (knock on wood) is McGraw (center) and he is the only Senior. The rest are Juniors or younger. So you have 4 out of 5 starters who have been injured in the first 3 games of the season. I'm not making excuses but that will make things difficult for any team especially one that plays in the Big Sky. After losing three offensive linemen last season with broken legs and the rash of injuries to the O-line this year, I think there may be a problem somewhere that needs a closer look. Maybe some additional sort of conditioning or technique would help or maybe it's a problem with equipment.
The starters, except Gumbs, are returning to health and most are playing again. They have been playing through the pain which is to their credit but they are not 100%. I agree that at times, defenses are coming off the edge and getting into the backfield. But thankfully, we have a mobile QB that can make most of those guys miss. He's a really good scrambler and continually looks down-field to make a play. I'm sure other Big Sky teams have their share of injuries too so I think things will even out. UNC's defense will be able to take advantage of other teams O-lines as well especially when they blitz.
From what I understand, UNC has a really good training staff and I'm sure they are working very hard to get our O-line healthy again.
